Evening all, good wishes.

Just had the misfortune to see an ad on tv, think it was about some sport event, had a sort of song in the background that seemed to refer to somewhere called "Ingerland"

I will concede that the "E" in the name of the country can sound and be pronounced like "I", but where on earth does the "er" come from?

Maybe from the 'original' Angle Land? Though it might well have been Land of the Angles. Who knows?

Being a life long pedant of the first water, Roger Whittaker used to have me howling with rage at “Ingerland swings like a pendulum do!” But he could whistle, and I love to whistle!

I’m a pedant too and can be heard regularly shouting at the BBC weather presenters about their bad pronunciation eg The fog is coming off of the west ?

BBC newsreaders, they can say the name of any town in any country but if reporting news from Wales, seems they can only pronounce Cardiff,Swansea,Newport .

BBC pronunciation seems to get worse and worse. If I have told (shouted at) Matt on Countryfile once it is Project not PROject I have told him a thousand times.

I read your post phoenix, and immediately thought of the football song "Vindaloo" by Fat Les. "We're Ingerland, and we're gonna score more goals than you".
I used to like Roger Whitaker, but not, the England swings song.
He was sitting on the banks of the wrong river when he was leaving "old Durham town" though.

Roger whittaker sang a song called durham town. It went im going to leave old durham town. Nothing to do with swingers and durham isnt on the tyne

Roger Whittaker also did that song that was all whistling, and very complicated whistling at that!
