Wasn’t it great?

Avon blue frosted eye shadow all over my lids. I became allergic to it and couldn't wear any eye make up for a long time. Went through all brands until found Max Factor and Estee Lauder were okay and expensive (always had expensive tastes). Still have problems with sone brands now.

Made a lot of my dresses because I was so thin (measured a skirt I had kept as I wore it first night I met husband and I had altered it to a 17 inch waist!) and bought a lot from Miss Selfridge. One dress I made was a Juliet style low cut dress (Romeo and Juliet with Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey was showing) and my mom asking what jumper I was wearing underneath (I was a 32AAAAA). Particularly remember a pair of white trousers with turn ups which actually fitted me, black velvet short sleeved jacket edged in satin and white blouse with leg of mutton sleeves. Thought I was the bees knees! Had a beautiful black crepe midi dress from Wallis dry clean only bought for Valentine's Day 1971. My mom got hold of it and washed it shrinking it. I could have cried I loved it so much. A maroon mini coat and maroon suede over the knee boots had a gap between coat and boots and my legs were numb from cold. I remember boiling American Tan tights to get them white but adding a bit too much bleach and they disintegrated. ,Someone mentioned black bows for hair. I started making these at school and did a roaring trade.

Always had a bath with bath cubes - gritty - or a splash of dettol until I developed a reaction to that!

Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, Cat Stevens, David Bowie all on the stereo system which I ordered by phone and had delivered. Bought a lot of my records by post from New Musical Express so I was doing what I do now by ordering online.

Favourite perfume was Estee Lauder Youth Dew but it was still there the next day on clothing and associated the morning after feeling with the stale smell. Went back to using it again (husband loves it) and still remember that smell/feeling.

Those were the days!

I think I might be about the same age as NotAGran55 because loon pants, leather laces round my neck, Aqua Manda, Amen Corner and The Herd are what I remember ? Never really got ready like that for dates though - no make-up, hair was long and never cut - for boys and girls - and we all just wore loon pants or frayed Levis and cheesecloth shirts - a very 'unisex' time.

Did you ever go to a club called
La Petite? It was on a little Street off Portland Street and nobody seems to remember it.
Also, a little club on Shude Hill but I can't remember the name.
Bet we were there at the same time.

Aquamanda perfume and shampoo out colours for your hair. Definitely Carmen rollers and skirts that came just to the end of your pants, so you daren’t bend over!

Maxi cardigans, loons (marvelous when they got wet!), platform soles, capes, yellow eyeshadow and Charlie perfume

I was quite the hippy in my teens. Wore long cheesecloth dresses and had an Afghan coat which smelt like it had only just parted company with the animal. I had long hair and was delighted when electric crimpers appeared. Wore patchouli which was very strong but when I could afford opium perfume I had an allergic reaction. Still like the smell even now. Listened to Led Zeppelin, Jo Jo Gunne and Santana

Oh yes! So many happy memories of the 60s and 70s. Though as a rather shy teen I never much enjoyed socialising, but I made the effort to be one of the crowd.
Queueing up on a Saturday night to get into The Royal in Tottenham and making a rum and coke last all night.
Black leather hot pants, or 12 inch mini skirts with a tight sweater and long shiny white boots. All hidden under an ankle length wool maxi coat.
Gorgeous Biba and Mary Quant dresses.
The 'panda eyes' look and ridiculously long false eyelashes. I soon ditched all that makeup when I realised I had to take it all off again in the early hours of the morning! Have never really worn makeup since then.
Coty L'Aiment and Blue Grass perfume. I still wear Blue Grass. I bought my first bottle of Channel No.5 with my first paycheck and it's still my favourite perfume.
All the boys seemed to wear Brut aftershave.
Listening to the latest hits in record booths in music shops, then handing them back because we couldn't afford to buy them.

Crocheted mini dresses. Trying to get my hair like Mary Quant, my eyes like Twiggy's, wishing I was Pattie Boyd!

Ooooh I remember those crocheted mini dresses. When the girls at work discovered I could crochet I was in hot demand. Then there were the dresses knitted on huge needles. I made several of those. My friend bought an embroidered Afghan coat that I was very envious of, until it had been hanging in a warm room for several hours and it stunk!!

Merlot - also 'It's snowing down south' if your petticoat had slipped below your dress

Wonderful thread and recognise most of the clothes, makeup and perfume mentioned.
I used to wear suede hot pants or skirt, satin party dresses I made myself. Those soft white boots which used to gradually fall down!
The interesting thing about this thread is that we all wore similar things in the 60s/70s and recognise ourselves in the descriptions. I don’t think that would happen now as fashion is far more diverse and people are more individual in their clothing. There’s so much choice of clothes and makeup these days.

It was so much fun getting ready to go out-used to use a wash out colour shampoo then a powder by Inecto I think grey/silver on top. I was lucky my hair was long blonde and straight. We all used to make our own clothes-a dress a week-shift dresses getting shorter and shorter each week. There used to be dances each Saturday night and we danced with the same boys each week but no romances-it was the dancing that was the thing. Used Miners make up or Mary Quant -perfume was Revlon's Intimate and listened to the Beatles, Monkees, Lovin' Spoonful. Great post and love to hear everyone's memories-really makes me think we were so lucky to live when we did

I think until the 'Swinging Sixties' most girls wore similar things to their mothers - good suits, white gloves and then full-skirted dresses with cardigans!

Dressing as a Mod. My style icon Twiggy wondering what I would do if I couldn't get false eyelashes. Perfume Topax and youth Dew. Music Amen Corner, The love Affair. Sitting in the bath with my Levi jeans on trying to get the colour out. Most of all my dads delicate tones shouting YOUR NOT BLOODY GOING OUT LOOKING LIKE THAT.

I was a wannabe Mod. I never quite made it. In my first job at 16 I thought I was a bit of a Mod. Then a girl came to work there who was a real Mod. I really envied her but I remember thinking it was a shame she was so old - she was 20!

This thread brings back so many memories but my dad was in the forces and we were always moving and lived in the back of beyond. Remember the petticoats, was 12 - 13 at the time and living in the far east. Our petticoats were starched with sugar and they were so stiff they stood up on their own. On return to UK it was monthly discos at the youth club with my friend and I making a different dress for each one. Was never short of a b/f and I remember one with long blond hair knocking on the door for me and my dad answering and shouting XXXX its your b/f and he is wearing a necklace. Clothes were short and sometimes long, white boots, tight tops and tights. Left home at 18 to work abroad and lived the life of a hippy. Oh the joy of feeling that freedom of staying up all night.

Long black maxi coat. Hot pants with bib. Solid block mascara (spat on the brush, just like Victoria Wood).
Long black platformed boots with jeans rolled up to knee to show them off.
Feather cut hair. Mary Quant perfume. Aquamanda perfume.
Caran d’Ache art pencils (a big tin,24 colours) used as eye makeup, Vaseline applied first to make it stick. All colours used, including yellow and bright pink.
And the joy of C and A and River Island, whose clothes were affordable. Remember the shop assistant that sat on a really high stool up in the ceiling, to deter shop lifters?
Getting ready to go out in ‘decent’ clothes, saying goodbye to parents, then quickly getting changed into the ‘real thing’ and nipping out of the door before they saw me.
