Having a shower

Am I the only person who hates showering?

I am very short-sighted and with glasses off and hearing aids out I feel quite disoriented. I lose the soap/ struggle to wash my feet at all/have yards of hair that needs drying........

And in strange showers on holiday it is even worse.

Cannot get in and out of bath - painful hip replacement.

I just grit my teeth and get on with it.

I don't think we need to wash and bathe so often when we get older. It dries out the skin and makes us even more wrinkly.
The last bath I had, I managed to climb out, came over giddy and fell, breaking my right thumb. So never again, that was about a year ago.

We don't have a shower. I wash all over every day in the wash basin and have a bath once or twice a week. Only a shallow bath now we're on a water meter. I don't think I smell hmm

We have walk-in showers in all bathrooms, no baths. But I hate overhead rainforest showers, just don't like that deluge of water above my head so I use the adjustable handset. I also fixed non slip discs in all the showers to avoid accidents.

Love my shower. I bought one of those massage mats to help clean your feet, but unless you are religious about washing and drying it after every use it can quickly get really "manky". ☹ Mine soon went in bin. We use a non slip mat in shower and try to rinse and leave it to dry each time or that can also get scummy. Worst showers have been on cruises. Really tiny and that curtain wraps right round you. ?

I love to have a bath. I’m lucky that mine has in built handles and can get out using them. I hate having a shower, as I hate soapy water falling on my face. I wash my hair over the bath!

Nanny41 Thu 21-Feb-19 16:02:36

We have a shower over the bath, ie. you have to get in the bath to shower, not too bad up to now but sooner or later the bath will have to go and we have a shower cabinet or walk in shower which would be best.I never wash my hair when showering I wash it seperately hanging my head over the bath, its easy and not as messy. The none shower days its a wash all over, including " down below". I love to shower but its a nuisance having to climb in and out of the bath.

I agree with Rizlett that bidets are useful for washing one's bottom. With a bidet one can wash the perineal area and buttocks several times a day if desired. And with no need to undress either. My wet room is what estate agents would call "dated" with rosy wall tiles. It has shower , bidet, basin and toilet. It's easy to clean the wet room . I empty two three pints of water with bleach on to the floor and skoosh it towards the drain with a soft brush. Then I use one of those stiff bristle brushes that grabs the old bath towel and swiftly mop up the surplus wetness With a wet room there's no need for plastic screens or curtains. And it's useful for washing the dog too.

My daughter is autistic and hates bathing (especially hair washing in the bath), and she's too scared to shower. I've just tried out Nilaqua waterless shampoo on her, and it worked really well!!! (It's different to dry shampoo - this one is used normally for people who are bedridden etc and cannot bath, and it actually cleans the hair as opposed to dry shampoo which just masks the dirt.) I also have the body wash in the range which I plan to take on holidays where only showers are available.

I miss the occasional soak too. I vividly remember the last time I tried one. Realising I was stuck, I had visions of the fire brigade arriving. Once upon a time that may have been rather nice smile but not wanting to see a strapping fireman vomit, I did the only thing I could. I put one arm and one leg over the edge of the bath and rolled out. Painful, but less humiliating than being rescued. I don't have any upper body strength now after surgery. Didn't realise I couldn't heave myself out.

I do miss a soak in the winter though.

There are worse things I guess.

Me too - hate it. It's not so much when you are in it as all the faffing around that goes with it before and after. I want a japanese shower that blow dries you as well. I have a friend who puts on her towelling robe and gets back into bed rather than drying herself with a towel.

While I'm here, can anyone recommend a lightweight towelling bathrobe - I sent off for one but it's so heavy it's worse than just drying myself.

I am so envious of those of you who are still able to take baths. Of all the things I miss, I miss my marbles baths the most.
Showering is just something I have to do, not something I enjoy the way I used to enjoy a nice long soak in the bath sad

As a kid we had a bath in the 'kitchenette' It had a formica lid that hooked open on bath night! Rest of the week it had pots, pans and other kitchen paraphanalia on it!

Greciangirl Thu 21-Feb-19 14:53:44

When showering, put the plug in so feet are being washed as you are showering.

Wash hair leaning over the bath with shower attachment if you have one. That’s what I do.
Luckily, I can choose either bath or shower and I don’t have a problem with either. Although I prefer a bath as showers always leave me feeling shivery.

Guineagirl Thu 21-Feb-19 14:52:14

I agree, I only have a shower cubicle, no bath inherited when I moved here ten years ago. I hate showers in baths when away and have slipped a few times and always wonder how clean they are so I pack a couple of cheap shower mats now and so feel a lot safer. My friend slipped and fell in her shower in the bath so ripped it out for a cubicle

I have a shower mostly but about once a month I have a bath using radox and a splash of dettol. I usually listen to the radio, it is very relaxing, but I must admit that because I wash my hair at the same time I end up with a quick rinse under the (over the bath) shower.
We also had a tin bath growing up, I think we (three sisters) all rushed into marriage to get a bathroom!

DanniRae Thu 21-Feb-19 14:25:47

Oh Sheilasue I really don't fancy the idea of putting my 'bits' in a net hanging over the shower. Sounds most uncomfortable shock

Sheilasue Thu 21-Feb-19 14:16:52

Can’t get out of the bath or in for that matter.
Love my shower. I don’t use soap I use shower wash. I know it’s difficult to bend down but I manage.
You can buy a net which hangs over the shower and put your bits in.

sazz1 Thu 21-Feb-19 14:12:27

Yes I hate the shower. I have a bath with a hand held shower spray attached so I can rinse my hair easily.

Carolpaint Thu 21-Feb-19 13:48:03

Has no one had one of those modified baths fitted. The poster did not want a wet room. As regards lying in filth this is nonsense, unless you are cleaning sewers, cowsheds, nav vying all day speak for yourselves. As regards speed and efficiency we are talking about pleasure and comfort, why should we hurry anymore. Whatever way you wash please moisturise and your toes.

Gaggi3 Thu 21-Feb-19 13:26:48

Neither I nor DH has had a bath for years. I think showers are quicker, cleaner and more efficient. Our bath, which was in the house when we bought it, is enormous and takes a wasteful amount of water to fill, I was never a lingerer in the bath so putting in all that water for a quick plunge and all over wash seemed extravagant. Only my small GC ever use our bath. We also have a bidet, which I find especially useful because of a medical condition.

ditzyme Thu 21-Feb-19 13:06:24

I have to handwash, stripwash it used to be called, because I have severe skin problems and cannot take anything but tepid water, and who the heck wants to soak in tepid water or stand under a tepid waterfall.

kircubbin2000 Thu 21-Feb-19 13:05:29

Short hair is much better at our age.Easy to care for and avoids the Mary Beard look.?

GabriellaG54 Thu 21-Feb-19 13:05:06

Washing your hair every day just washes the natural oils out of it.
Unless you sweat a lot or have a dirty job where dust and hazardous particles get in your hair, it's better for your hair health to wash it a max of twice a week.
Brushing it a couple of times a day massages your scalp and distributes oils along the shaft.
Many Indian ladies are known for their luxurious hair don't wash their locks for weeks.
Many shampoos and conditioners have sulfates and parabens which are adding to water pollution. Not a good idea.

quizqueen Thu 21-Feb-19 13:03:17

I haven't had a bath for years - sitting in all that dirty, scummy water is yuk! A daily shower and hair wash for me, and a facial scrub. No need to wash feet separately unless wearing flip flops all summer, and I then I give my feet a soak in a bowl and a good scrubbing and finish off with body cream.

JanaNana Thu 21-Feb-19 12:52:36

I prefer a bath but usually shower mostly for speed. The shower is over the bath, so when I shower I put the bath plug in first and my feet get a soak at the same time. Usually have a leisurely soak once or twice a week, the bath has chrome hand grips inside of it so still easy enough to get in and out.
