Forget the Windsors, who would you choose for President?

Jalima1108 Mon 18-Feb-19 16:41:23

and she is very political!!

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 16:40:22

Gonegirl slight problem, she is German

Gonegirl Mon 18-Feb-19 16:34:55

I second giving the job to Angela Merkel as a retirement project (as per Jane10's post). She comes across as sensible, level-headed and friendly.

Jalima1108 Mon 18-Feb-19 16:29:07

The Royal family is NOT Apolitical ...for heavens sake yu'd need to be deaf blind and dumb to think that
I am none of those things - what a rude post.

She may open Parliament, she may have to give the Royal Assent to legislation but that is purely formal. She may have her own views which we rarely know about and PMs may ask for her advice - but that is all it is.

The British Head of State is apolitical and we need to keep it that way whether the RF continues or we have an elected Head of State.

MissAdventure Mon 18-Feb-19 16:23:12

Oh I wouldn't mind him!

PECS Mon 18-Feb-19 16:21:45

Idris Elba?

JK is out for other reasons in Scotland a big supporter of "the vow" that never was as Gordon Brown was too.Shame he could have been a good PM Winston would lose his title if we got rid of monarchy Annie nothing to stop him then

PECS Mon 18-Feb-19 16:19:35

Jalima it is not beyond possibility to like someone but not agree on their politics!

mcem Mon 18-Feb-19 16:15:29

Paddy I take your point about EVEL but we're not talking about the HoC here.
It would be a wholly different concept. I'd see Magnus M B as a well respected candidate.

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 16:14:44

J K Rowling is out, close friend of Gordon and Sarah Brown, a Blairite ? ?

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 16:13:23

Sorry paddyann Robert Winston is in the Lords and you want rid of them

franjess2000 Mon 18-Feb-19 15:59:18

What about JK Rowling? She seems kind but strong and does a lot of charity work

Jalima1108 Mon 18-Feb-19 15:42:01

goodness me isn't that what places like North Korea do and we slate THEM .I truly am amazed at the people who support royalty.

We know that already paddyann - but equating the apolitical Royal Family, HM especially with the murderous authoritarian North Korean dynasty really is beyond belief!

Jalima1108 Mon 18-Feb-19 15:40:01

To be fair Janea I don't imagine them voting Labour!
Apparently Harold Wilson was HM's favourite Prime Minister of all.

I can't think of anyone who does not have a political bias.

paddyann Mon 18-Feb-19 15:38:13

Thats because its treated like a joke ...in a grown up coutry ,not one where folk think the monarch is entitled to a job ofr life and then pass it on and on ...people take voting for a president seriously .
Either of my two Scots or Robert Winston whose age or origins I dont know would do a better job for far less outlay AND not expect their kids to take over ...goodness me isn't that what places like North Korea do and we slate THEM .I truly am amazed at the people who support royalty.

PECS Mon 18-Feb-19 15:34:12

If David Attenborough not available what about Orla Doherty? She seems to be on his wavelength.

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 15:17:15

So far we have two Americans, two Scots and a 92 year old man nominated, ?

DanniRae Mon 18-Feb-19 14:47:30

I'm fine with Royal Family staying right where they are, thank you smile

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 14:44:17

Anne is a Windsor, hardly likely to stand if her mother, brother and nephew have been booted out of their jobs is she ? And republicans want rid of the Windsors

Wheniwasyourage Mon 18-Feb-19 14:41:44

As Nelson Mandela isn't available, I would go for Princess Anne, who works hard and seems to have a sense of humour.

PECS Mon 18-Feb-19 14:22:55

Rosie & who has made the decisions about what constitutes
"properly prepared", who made the laws for " law abiding" citizens to follow and defined " illegal immigrant" status? If that is you then it sounds a bit too like North Korea for it to be my utopia!??

SueDonim Mon 18-Feb-19 14:16:15

David Attenborough, because he's going to live forever, right? smile

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 14:10:27

I didn’t specify English, Welsh, Irish or Scots

I am sure there are suitable contestants in the four countries of the U.K.

paddyann Mon 18-Feb-19 13:57:02

Annie didn't specify ENGLISH only
