Why me.........?

Managed to lose my balance in son’s utility room earlier today, fell over and broke my right shoulder. This is the second time I’ve done this albeit last time was in 2008. I’ll have to wear a collar/cuff sling for up to 6 weeks confused. I’m blaming my bp meds for the fall, last time it was checked I had a reading of 77/44! I queried this but GP said it was in acceptable range. Hmm. I had bent over 4 times this morning just after getting up to pick up slippers, etc from my case (we were staying with ds/dil) so think my head being lower than my heart 4 times in rapid succession plus just getting up from the horizontal caused my fall. Not a happy bunny on several levels.

You poor thing! That sounds incredibly uncomfortable and must mean you're very restricted in what you can do. flowers

Wrt blood pressure, mine has always been on the low side, readings such as 65/48 wouldn't be unusual for me and nomon has ever suggested it to me. But I imagine maybe a naturally low BP is a different kettle of fish to an artificially lowered BP.

Anja I think what’s concerning in this case is that this was medication induced hypotension and not ‘natural’. When I started on my bp medication, the GP was clear that we were to achieve a level that was not too low and his main reason was the risk of falls

can I ask if your heartrate was particularly low too? My OH uses a moitor for his BP and he's been getting very low heartrate readings on it .As low as 47 ! I made an appointment with his GP who told him 47 isn't too low ,he's been dizzy getting up and as he had heart attacks a few years ago I'm very concerned .

Most doctors consider blood pressure too low only if it causes symptoms. Some experts define low blood pressure as readings lower than 90 mm Hg systolic or 60 mm Hg diastolic. If either number is below that, your pressure is lower than normal. Your reading were below at both levels.

I’d change your GP!

I’m really pleased that you are now receiving proper care. It could well be argued that your falls were a result of your dangerously low bp. I know you may not feel upto it but have you thought of asking why the GP made that (actually unforgivable) error? I used to work in medical regulation and complaints and had this case been notified to me I would have insisted on some formal retraining on bp for this GP and requested an audit on his records to check if he had made this error previously.

It was maryeliza - am now scheduled for 24 hour bp monitor so I can get this sorted out properly. It’s not great that I’ve had to suffer this fall but at least it’s brought it all to a head. I hear what you’re saying hypertension, but we live in the country and next GP practice is 12 miles away. I think a salutary lesson has been learned as practice is now falling over itself to sort this out.

Was your low blood pressure mentioned when you were being treated in hospital with your shoulder?

Sorry about your accident but even sorrier for the utter disgrace of a GP you have. S/he is just wrong. You need to complain and change GPS - this is dangerous

BP is too low, lower than 90/60 should be a cause for concern. if your GP does not change your meds then I would suggest going to another one. Falls are def. to be avoided, but I guess you know that. Hope you get better soon.

Katek, so sorry to hear of your fall, at least you slept not too badly last night. Just look after yourself and take your time with everything. flowers

Lily65 Fri 15-Feb-19 10:46:41

I'm really sorry to hear this...do you think these accidents might be " telling you something" along with the title of your thread?

Maybe you are doing too much for other people?

Mapleleaf Fri 15-Feb-19 10:27:25

flowers, Katek.
Pleased you managed to get a reasonable nights sleep.
I'm glad you are going back to the doctor, 77/44 seems very low. They might adjust your medication.

Nonnie Fri 15-Feb-19 10:15:33

Sorry to hear this. Can you get a BP monitor and check it regularly? Apparently you should do it 4 times a day for a week and work out the average. If it is then still very low I think you should go back to your GP. I have low BP and sometimes have to sit down rather quickly but mine is not as low as that.

midgey Fri 15-Feb-19 09:51:12

Do hope you mend soon and the doctor is at least a little bit sorry! flowers

Anniebach Fri 15-Feb-19 08:54:24

Pleased to report I actually managed a reasonable night’s sleep - thanks to dh who managed to catch shops before they closed and bought a V pillow. It’s V comfy! Heading to doc at 9 to discuss meds as I can’t have that happening again. What a day it was, we had to travel 100 miles to get home as well!

cornergran Thu 14-Feb-19 22:37:03

Ouch katek, hope you sleep well and mend quickly. Take care, please.

Oh Katek you poor thing! One of those times you wish you could just turn the clock back and then move more slowly and carefully.
