Soccer

Neither have I gillybob. Whatever its called its a boring game played by ridiculously overpaid footballers.

I have never heard football being called soccer here in the UK . My dad who is 81 hasn’t either .

Soccer is an abbreviation of Association Football, so called to distinguish it from Rugby Football.

Soccer used to be used quite generally in the UK, now the term 'footie' has become more popular.
I grew up hearing the term 'soccer match' and have heard DS use this too and he's not that old!

Rufus - yes, the term soccer does differentiate 'proper' football from rough Aussie Rules football over there!

When I was young the term 'rugger' was often used as well but I rarely hear it now.

PECS; You mean to say you missed my virtual 91th birthday party hosted by NanKate last July? It was all over the social columns! I suppose your DH was around when Hungary caused a sensation thrashing England 3-6 at Wembley, in 1954 then a few months later 7-1 in Hungary. Puskas was the problem. Shook England well and truly out of its complacency. I didn't get to that sell-out match, although I managed a few others at White Hart Lane. Now waiting anxiously, although brimming with confidence, for United to collect the FA Cup.

No idea how old you are Rufus but I guess DH been visiting Stamford Bridge since 1954/55. He is not one of those supporters who are always making excuses, blaming others etc. if the team play like a bunch of bambis he admits it!

I remember my Dad saying "never stand behind those iron crowd separators (not sure if they had a name); always in front. Otherwise when the crowd surged forward there was a good chance of being crushed. Expect all mod. cons these days!

All 4 DGC play footie & DGD1 was player of the year for her team last season.
I never go to watch them. Years ago I had to self ban myself from matches when I was a HT as I was getting too excited as the team got nearer the final.

Today my football mad elder grandson was 8, he scored a hat trick at his footie club and his favourite team Brighton and Hove Albion beat Derby City 2 - 1.

He has had a really rough 18 months and this is just what he needed. Hurray ⚽️⚽️⚽️?‍♂️

This sort of suggestive banter is ill judged and inappropriate and in the same way that women in past times might have had to put up with inappropriate comments or behaviour, it is not the fault of the person on the receiving end, is it?

I do realise you think you are just being lighthearted but the pain of losing DH is still too recent for me to be able to laugh it off.

I m not in Aussie Rufus and in Uk it’s called FOOTBALL no one calls it soccer my grandson plays FOOTBALL for the county in NZ my other grandson also plays FOOTBALL neither have ever mentioned Soccer to me

Because there's a well entrenched football game known as "Footy", similar to Gaelic football, and we don't want confusion.
