I'm a BT customer and there is a problem with cold callers trying to get people's card information. They try various tactics, but they know personal details, so it would seem to be one of BT's employees. Bt have been told that there is a problem but they say it's just coincidence that they have so much information.

Sorry to interrupt this chat but I tried searching for how to begin a new topic and this came up....probably because of the OP’s reference above. Can anyone advise me?

This does look like a hoax and so you’ve done exactly the right thing.
If I were you I’d phone BT and report it.
I’ve just googled ‘BT callblocking hoax’ and found several threads though none were specifically callblocking.

ps: I meant to add that all callers receive a recording which starts: CALLS TO THIS NUMBER ARE MONITORED, so really anyone who calls can pretend to be from the call monitoring admin and try to get bank info from them. Now I am wondering if it creates as much as it helps. I do not usually pick the phone up until it rings through to the extension.

Not sure if chat is the right place but I am new and cannot see how to start anywhere else.

Have you joined the BT call blocking arrangement? I joined in November. I have had a 'guardian' phone my daughter bought for me a couple of years ago. Last year I put the house on the market and had difficulty with the agent. When the contract finished in July I suddenly started getting a lot of calls each day. They would ring, wait long enough to listen to the guardian recording instructing callers. Now most people know my email address. They also know I am disabled. Each time the phone ring I would get up and prepare to pick it up on the guardian phone (I do not have a mobile). After listening to the recording whoever it was rang off. This went on several times. At first I thought it might be computer generated but it would ring early in the morning and after office hours. When I heard about the new call block system I joined it and now have caller display and the calls are tailing off. THIS EVENING I was at the computer and it rang so thinking it was my DD I picked it up. It was an Asian man saying he was from the call blocking department and asking me how the system was working and I said it was a great improvement.

HOWEVER he next asked me if I paid my phone bill by DD each month and I said I did. He said he wanted to remind me that MY DEBIT CARD WAS ABOUT TO EXPIRE and I said it was not, that it had years to go. THEN he asked me for the MONTH it was due to expire and I refused to tell him and said goodbye and he protested. In the end I just put the phone down. I have written to the people who advise on the system and asked if they actually do check up on the call blocking member. Obviously I do not expect a reply until next working week but I have informed my children and thought I would put the message on Gransnet. I would have preferred a discussion group but could not see how to start a new thread and this is not on the list of forum subjects.
