When there are so many people needing life saving trasfusions of blood or platelets this just sounds obscene. If you want to do something useful with your blood try saving a life!

I have heard that a member of a certain rock group has had regular transfusions, but have no idea if the blood they receive is from a younger person.

It is believed within the horse racing world that blood transfusions can have a beneficial effect.

Ridiculous. No more to be said.

It's also potentially quite dangerous, as the article points out. One of the things it doesn't mention is that receiving frequent blood transfusions can cause your body to develop antibodies. I've cared for patients who have needed frequent blood transfusions. In some cases they've needed to have their blood specially cross-matched. This means that in addition to the regular cross-match they have to have additional antibody testing. They've received so many transfusions that they now have unusual antibodies that can create problems.

that is worrying at every level... Where does this stop? There'll be farms of young children being bred just for their blood. yuck, yuck, yuck.

And also...really?? How much proof is there that it even works. Emperor's new clothes and all that.

Why is everyone so obsessed with youth?

blacksheep Wed 23-Jan-19 17:05:08

Er...no. I am no biology expert but putting young blood into older veins is not going to do anything to make you young again! I don't really want to be young again in any case. Utterly ridiculous, anyone even thinking about this must be bonkers

Pretzel Wed 23-Jan-19 17:02:27

get a younger person's blood transfused into your own veins??
