I also have to be really careful with this sort of thing because of DH's suppressed immune system. I would eat the stuff myself but not give it to him. Never refreeze thawed meat unless you cook it first. It's really not worth the risk. I remember my father being very ill in the days before use by dates. He had no sense of smell and couldn't tell things had gone off.

I take no notice of use by dates. Much food is wasted because of these dates. Bacon is a way of preserving pork. Yogurts are made by keeping the milk at a low temperature for hours sometimes adding bacteria which are useless anyway.
Eggs should not be refrigerated nor should tomatoes.

Definitely would eat them. The fridge will have kept trying to maintain the set temperature, maybe not as effectively if the door had been closed. I would even eat packet bacon a couple if days out of date if stored properly. Bacon is cured. Yoghurts rarely have if out of date.

Depends entirely on where you live. If it’s the U.K. or Europe I’d say definitely yes. If it’s Australia or NZ or somewhere else that is basking in glorious sunshine, then it would be a no.

As for the bacon it is likely full of preservatives anyway, You will live. Your hubby can have cereal.

Yes, why not cook the bacon and then you can freeze it until you need it? The yogurts should be fine, the shelves at the supermarket are not as cold as a home fridge I find and they seem to manage okay!

I would say to be on the safe side do not give to OH. If bacon at room temp for more than a couple of hours it may start to grow bacteria. For a fit and well person I would say cook and eat without keeping any longer if it looks, smells ok. For yoghurt, I wouldn't take the risk with him.

Oooh! Not sure about the refreezing of defrosted meats, Alleycat - I think I would have had a big cook off first then refreeze ?

Bacon is fine as long as it's not green and I've eaten previously unopened yogurt 6 weeks after their use by date.

The question is far from academic here as OH is very frail indeed and a bout of food poisoning would carry him off. That is why this intelligent person is asking the question.

The idea of wasting the food is appalling to me - but so is killing him off.
