My car was due to have its MOT in a weeks time when I had a puncture. There was a tyre place nearby ( not Kwickfit) so I went in to get the tyre repaired and was told that my shock absorbers were in a very poor state etc etc. I listened and then politely told them that the car was going in for its MOT and I would have my usual garage do it. When I took the car into my trusted garage I told them to pay particular attention to the shock absorbers. When I went to collect it my mechanic asked me who had told me the shock absorbers needed replaced because there was nothing wrong with them. I told him and he just shook his head in disgust. He was brilliant!

I quite agree. I had my car serviced at a dealership in October(mainly for technical updates) I was told that my rear tyres were dangerous and they could replace them there and then. I declined and had them checked at my local garage...they laughed and told me that this was a common ploy....4 months later and 2 thousand miles I had my MOT without even an advisory. It would be nice to feel you could trust a dealership.

Craftycat, how awful. Thank goodness you didn’t fall for it. Was that a company whose name starts with K? I had to use them for a tyre repair the other day but was ready to do battle as they are apparently notorious for doing what you describe.

Works both ways! - men buying flowers - they get ripped off! My OH once bought me a bunch of flowers that lost all its petals as I put them in the jug. They would not have got away with selling such rubbish if I had been buying!

I always go to a small local garage who are always polite and explain things clearly. Been going there for years and never feel ripped off.

I took my car into a local tyre place a few weeks ago as my front tyres needed replacing- I could see that for myself.
When they had done them the manager told me that my brake pads were very worn & needed replacing. He took me out to show me- I've never seen a brake pad in my life so had no clue. He said- you don't want to take any risks as I can see you take children in your car- (3 child seats gave that away). He then gave me a quote & said he could do them then & there if I wanted.
I lease my car & it is due to go back in March so I said no thanks - I'll check if that is in with what I pay to lease it & left.
I did get a quote over the phone from the company I lease from but decided to go with a small local garage who looks after my H's car.
Surprise Surprise! I took it in this morning & they have just rung to say there is nothing wrong with pads & they have at least another 8000 miles left on them.
Now I really do not believe that if my DH had taken my car in for tyres to be done they would have tried this on him ( actually he would have no clue what a brake pad looked like either TBH!)
I can only assume that because I am a woman they decided to try it on- I have no witnesses so no way of proving this at all. All I can do is tell everyone I know NOT to use this place.
I am so cross- if I had not been in a hurry ( as they had taken so flaming long to do the tyres!) I may have gone along with it.
Although TBH I did not like the man anyway- feminine intuition maybe- so would have been reluctant to pend anymore time in there.
Be warned ladies & maybe any men with no car knowledge too!
