Please HQ, step away from the Pinot and crisps and do your job?

All so complicated, a male poster said directly to me ‘ you are a target ‘ should I join the ‘Me to’ movement

Grandad1943 Sun 30-Dec-18 18:32:15

I should add to the above on or off this forum.

Grandad1943 Sun 30-Dec-18 18:31:17

Parsley3 it still remains on the forum for anyone to reference at any time.

Parsley3 Sun 30-Dec-18 18:25:25

How I agree with not feeding the ego. A dubious post will quietly slip off the page if no one adds to the thread.

Chewbacca Sun 30-Dec-18 18:13:58

Thanks Grandad1943. As I said, male posters are not all of the same ilk and shouldn't be tarred with the same brush.

Nonnie Sun 30-Dec-18 17:41:27

Well said Grandad. I have noticed one or two people on here over the years who clearly need to read the Act.

Grandad1943 Sun 30-Dec-18 17:35:26

oldbatty, to stipulate that this forum is for the use of the female gender only, would be in all probability a gross infringement of the Equalities Act 2010.

The Equalities Commision has taken up many cases where the rules of various organisations have prescribed against women. For a well-known internet forum such as this to bring in a rule making it "female only" would undoubtedly bring a legal challenge very quickly.

I believe there are several gay and transgender groups already considering legal action against MN and GN in the form that it is now.

The above is the reason I do not request highly insulting posts against me be removed, so as such groups and others can witness such posts.

Nanna58 Sun 30-Dec-18 17:33:58

Oh Nonnie you don’t know how glad I am to see your post, that is all I was saying too. ?

Nonnie Sun 30-Dec-18 17:30:41

As I haven't seen the offensive posts may I make a suggestion? As another said, leave the thread, ignore it, don't feed the ego of the person who is offensive. If appropriate report it.

I don't read every thread. If the title looks like something I cannot helpfully comment on I don't open it. If I open it and read the OP and then think I cannot say anything helpful I leave. There is no need to comment on everything or to sit and be offended. I am only offended if someone says something I take to be personal.

Chewbacca Sun 30-Dec-18 17:16:31

That's ok oldbatty, we can disagree without falling out smile

I think that's right Elegran. And I love the word "hoyden". Not heard that for years! grin

Nanna58 Sun 30-Dec-18 17:15:02

Thanks Maw, and I can assure you my post was not advocating a return to the acceptance of sexist comments , merely the most effective way of cutting of an inappropriate posters ‘ online oxygen’

Elegran Sun 30-Dec-18 17:12:08

It is actually that reaction that has made so many men perfectly prepared to be outrageous. If a boy is cheeky, mouthy, gets into fights, throws himself around, acts dangerously, the reaction of his loving older relatives (men and women) is often to smile indulgently and say "He's a real boy", while a girl acting the same way is told not to be a hoyden. No wonder some grow up into men who think it macho to continue to act like that.

MawBroon Sun 30-Dec-18 17:10:51

I agree with GrannyGravy everybody (well some people) seem to be extra sensitive today.

oldbatty Sun 30-Dec-18 17:10:46

Chew , I am totally not in the mood for warfare but I feel it should be for women. I really do.

I am also heartily sick of the endless discussion of matters of a sexual nature. We are all women of the world....been there , done that ,got the GC ...why do we need to talk about it?

Chewbacca Sun 30-Dec-18 17:10:38

Agree with you absolutely Nanna58 but in fairness to the majority of male posters, they have the decency to either avoid those personal or sensitive threads and move on or not make crude suggestive comments. Although that wasn't the case in this particular instance, I still don't feel it would be fair to exclude all men from the forum; they are not all of the same ilk. Sometimes it's good to hear an opinion from the male perspective.

MawBroon Sun 30-Dec-18 17:08:02

Not suggesting you personally, Nanna in fact TBH I didn’t notice who had posted, just the sentiment of the post!

Oldwoman70 Sun 30-Dec-18 17:06:32

I think the male GNs would avoid a thread about female health related problems - unless they were medically qualified. In my experience mention "women's problems" and most men run for the hills

Elegran Sun 30-Dec-18 17:06:13

But, Nanna58 why do you think that Mawbroon was suggesting that you do that? I read it as a list of some of the "possible" reactions, not ones that were recommended - far from it, the rest of the post shows that.

Chewbacca Sun 30-Dec-18 17:04:19

Yes Ourkid, that's the thing to do. And it was done.

Nanna58 Sun 30-Dec-18 17:03:26

Because, rightly or wrongly, some female posters might be reluctant to ask for help or advice on a health related issue if they know it a mixed gender forum. It has nothing to do with the wit or intelligence of the male posters.

OurKid1 Sun 30-Dec-18 17:02:02

If I think a post is fake, but isn't actually offensive, I ignore it. If I think it is fake but is offensive, I report it, having been told off for troll hunting That's probably the best thing to do, isn't it?

Oldwoman70 Sun 30-Dec-18 17:01:19

I agree with Chewbacca - there is a difference between light hearted banter and inappropriate remarks.

Chewbacca Sun 30-Dec-18 16:59:39

Why should it be women only? There are very few male posters on this forum but all of them, bar one particular poster, manages to post witty, intelligent, informative posts; even if you don't necessarily agree with their point of view. One bad apple shouldn't mean that the whole barrel has to be thrown out.

Chewbacca Sun 30-Dec-18 16:56:54

As I said on another thread earlier today; in all the time that I've been on GN, I have never seen any sexually inappropriate remarks posted by anyone until this weekend. The person who did so, who is a relatively new male poster, has soured what has, until now, been thankfully free of any form of sexual harassment. We've moved on from having to accept that "it's just the way men are".

Nanna58 Sun 30-Dec-18 16:54:59

Totally agree, but I don’t think there’s a way of ensuring that is so.
