Odd query about an odd experience

I know its most peculiar but I thought I'd ask if I'm being daft. The problem is re a folding bed. We bought it a few years ago from Argos. We keep it in a downstairs store room. Its very cold there. It was last used in July when DGS came to stay. We put it up in the bedroom next to my bed. So far so good. However, in the middle of the night we were disturbed by a constant chirping noise. It was very high pitched and repetitive. We both listened to it and checked thoroughly that DGS wasnt somehow causing the noise eg by squeaking the springs. He absolutely wasn't. We somehow fell asleep again and life went on. The bed was folded away and put down in the store room again.
On Friday DGS came to stay again and the same thing happened!! As he fell asleep it started up again. Even when we lifted him out and put him in my bed the chirping went on. It seemed to come from 3 different locations in the mattress. Are we mad? Could it be hatching cicada larvae or similar? DGS's body temp raising the temp enough? Its a horrible thought. DH checked where the mattress was made and it was China.
Its such a mystery. The folding bed is so handy but not if we can't use it due to the sounds it emits!
Any thoughts?

Bluebelle Hopefully not but why couldn't it be mice ? Just another family moving in when the others have moved out ?

We had a similar problem... it was kept in a garage and we brought it out and set it up and loads of larvae were present. Binned thewhole thing....

I would be on my way to the local tip now I wouldn't be happy with it in the house and even less happy to have my DGS sleeping on it trust your instincts

Crickets! They are absolutely harmless. Ignore them and put the bed back in storage when you have finished with it and forget them.

Perhaps it was just the springs needing oiling!

I would need to know what it was. If it was some form of insect/mice, you may have the same problem again with another bed if you keep it in the same place.

I would investigate in the daytime.

Whatever it is do you want to risk it hatching? In your house? I’m so intrigued ? keep us posted we have to get to the bottom of this .....

Maybe it was just the foam degrading? Some foam goes hard in time and any weight on it would cause it to break up. I’m sure if you opened it up it would be all powdery and only fit for the tip.

Cant offer any advice really that hasn't already been said but i am ding to know so please open it and give us the verdict.

In my experience mice don't chirp, so if the mattress has been invaded by vermin it is much more likely to be a cricket or some kind of beetle.

I would definitely follow the advice to fumigate it and the storeroom where you keep it as well.

I am so upset... I wanted to know what was making the noise. You could have opened it outside...just to put us all out of our misery....wanders off contemplating life, the universe and noisy mattresses....

Oh Jan 10, if that were me, I wouldn't be able to stand it! I'd accept that the mattress contains an insoluble mystery and bin it.

If your DH objects to that, perhaps you can invite him to sleep on it!

It actually could not have been a mouse. Mattress would have been damp and smelt of mouse urine....

Living in Singapore many years ago I went to pick up my towel after a shower and several large cockroaches fell out of it..... Also suffered from cockroaches in Cyprus and Australia. Had to have the whole house fumigated every 6 months in Australia. Also white ants (termites) and mason wasps in Singapore.

It was a solid foam one. No possibility of its harbouring mice!!!!!
Anyway ITS GONE now.
