Odd query about an odd experience

I know its most peculiar but I thought I'd ask if I'm being daft. The problem is re a folding bed. We bought it a few years ago from Argos. We keep it in a downstairs store room. Its very cold there. It was last used in July when DGS came to stay. We put it up in the bedroom next to my bed. So far so good. However, in the middle of the night we were disturbed by a constant chirping noise. It was very high pitched and repetitive. We both listened to it and checked thoroughly that DGS wasnt somehow causing the noise eg by squeaking the springs. He absolutely wasn't. We somehow fell asleep again and life went on. The bed was folded away and put down in the store room again.
On Friday DGS came to stay again and the same thing happened!! As he fell asleep it started up again. Even when we lifted him out and put him in my bed the chirping went on. It seemed to come from 3 different locations in the mattress. Are we mad? Could it be hatching cicada larvae or similar? DGS's body temp raising the temp enough? Its a horrible thought. DH checked where the mattress was made and it was China.
Its such a mystery. The folding bed is so handy but not if we can't use it due to the sounds it emits!
Any thoughts?

I keep being drawn back to this thread like a moth to a flame. The horror! tchgrin

In my experience mice don't chirp, so if the mattress has been invaded by vermin it is much more likely to be a cricket or some kind of beetle.

I would definitely follow the advice to fumigate it and the storeroom where you keep it as well.

Cant offer any advice really that hasn't already been said but i am ding to know so please open it and give us the verdict.

I’d have to get a new mattress!!!

kircubbin2000 Mon 24-Dec-18 11:31:29

Probably your smoke alarm battery.

BearandCardigan Mon 24-Dec-18 11:21:32

Maybe it was just the foam degrading? Some foam goes hard in time and any weight on it would cause it to break up. I’m sure if you opened it up it would be all powdery and only fit for the tip.

annep Mon 24-Dec-18 11:00:12

Yes, open the mattress!

ooonana Mon 24-Dec-18 10:51:21

Whatever it is do you want to risk it hatching? In your house? I’m so intrigued ? keep us posted we have to get to the bottom of this .....

Molly10 Mon 24-Dec-18 10:40:11

Perhaps it was just the springs needing oiling!

I would need to know what it was. If it was some form of insect/mice, you may have the same problem again with another bed if you keep it in the same place.

I would investigate in the daytime.

LJP1 Mon 24-Dec-18 10:27:13

Crickets! They are absolutely harmless. Ignore them and put the bed back in storage when you have finished with it and forget them.

harrysgran Mon 24-Dec-18 10:22:48

I would be on my way to the local tip now I wouldn't be happy with it in the house and even less happy to have my DGS sleeping on it trust your instincts

MadFerretLady Mon 24-Dec-18 10:20:50

We had a similar problem... it was kept in a garage and we brought it out and set it up and loads of larvae were present. Binned thewhole thing....

sarahellenwhitney Mon 24-Dec-18 10:19:12

Bluebelle Hopefully not but why couldn't it be mice ? Just another family moving in when the others have moved out ?

harrigran Mon 24-Dec-18 10:18:17

Oh that does sound worrying, my mind is in overdrive as to what the creatures were.
I once found the most enormous cockroach on the study floor, so big it sent shudders down my spine, and I have worked night shift in old buildings. I googled to find a picture of the cockroach and it said it was of Chinese origin, I think it must have been carried in a large box that surrounded a dolls house, sadly an expensive toy that I believed had been made in Britain.

annemac101 Mon 24-Dec-18 10:15:11

My son had a lizard when he was young. He fed it crickets among other things. The inevitable happened and some escaped. We would lie in bed at night listening to the chirping,it drove us mad. We would hunt the house for these crickets and only find them when we weren't looking.
Some had went through floorboards and fallen down between wall. Horrendous!

I’ve had the best giggle with this thread. Made my morning!! tchsmile

Day6 that was Take Your Pick, with Michael Miles. Hughie Green hosted Double Your Money. Gosh, that was a long time ago - I used to love both programmes smile

Chewbacca shockshock. Not sure I could have been as brave as you!!!

Suki70 Sun 23-Dec-18 22:09:49

Jane10 it would be a block buster grin grin

Jane10 Sun 23-Dec-18 21:59:42

Day6 Christmas presents are supposed to be nice or at least acceptable! Maybe 'The Mystery of the Chirruping Mattress' could be the next best selling thriller? In the film of it I'd want me to be played by Meryl Streep (or Jo Brand) DH would have to be played by Charles Dance (or Mr Pastry) DGS by Prince George of course. The detective could be that chap from 'Shetland'. He always seems so kind yet competent. Oh no. I've got carried away again. Dratted mattress!

SueDonim Sun 23-Dec-18 21:22:46

grin at three days in a kiln.

We used to get huge cockroaches when we lived abroad. They give me the screaming abdabs.

MissAdventure Sun 23-Dec-18 21:10:31

Well, at least tell us where the dump is! tchgrin

Day6 Sun 23-Dec-18 21:07:53

Do you remember that programme where contestants were urged to "Open the Box!" and see what was in there?(Can't think of the name of it right now...compered by Hughie Green, or Michael Miles?)

This is the "Open the Mattress" equivalent! grin

I can understand your getting rid of it Jane but for a moment there it was like we all had the suspense of an extra mystery/surprise Christmas present to open tchgrin

Chewbacca Sun 23-Dec-18 20:53:53

Bathsheba...... Large black plastic rubble sack, shaken wide open. Loosen the top of the dust box, but definitely not opened fully. Put dust box into the rubble sack, holding it through the sack itself, with one hand. With the other hand, snatch off the lid of dust box, shake dust box violently to shake contents to the bottom of the sack and whip out both the box and the lid as quick as you can. Grab the sack around the middle, knot it and throw it in the bin as quick as possible. Don't use the dustbin again until its been emptied. Just in case.shudder

Bathsheba Sun 23-Dec-18 19:02:17

But Chewbacca, I meant to ask, what did you do with the four that were inside your Dyson? You said the first one was still flying around inside the drum shock, so presumably the three others survived the journey up the tube and into the drum as well. Did they just beat each other to death inside the small space? I can scarcely bear to think about it, ugh

Bathsheba Sun 23-Dec-18 18:57:41

Oh good grief Chewbacca, I'd have died a thousand deaths shock

Jane10 I would definitely be inclined to bin the mattress, but please have a look inside first - we are all itching (literally!) to know what's there!
