If you won the lottery

A very good idea Jenpax because they are the people least helped generally.

My dream (besides helping my DDs out and buying my villa in Tuscany!) would be to set up a charity to buy small studio flats for single or couples who are homeless, as this is the demographic which falls most often through the net!
Rents would be set very low,and benefits would be accepted,each tenant would have the option of a support worker funded by the charity, to help them settle in to stable accommodation, sort out benefits, get furniture, arrange bill payments etc. and help with accessing debt advice (if needed)
Having worked with very disadvantaged clients over many years in my job with a legal advice charity, I found that this is the group which usually draws the short straw with getting support and a leg up, especially the young homeless people.

Why to the Church? Biggest landowners & shareholders in the land. I never get why they appeal to their ‘poor’ parishioners to help fund a new roof or some such. Unbelievable.

I remember hearing about a woman who lived locally. She won a lot of money and vowed to save her village. She planned on reopening a factory, amongst other things. As far as I know it all went wrong for her. Sad to think she wanted her money to help her community, but probably didn't have the business brain to make it work.

Like most of us, I dream about this occasionally, but like Daisyboots, I have dual citizenship and my other country taxes lottery wins quite heavily, so my first step would be finding a way to avoid them finding out!!

Have had daydreams about what I would do if I won the lottery but DH always says he would need to win it before he thought about it. My plans were always a large donation to a children's hospice and then making sure my family were financially worry free by making sure they all had mortgage free homes of their own.
Strangely when this came up at a family gathering about 12 years ago my adult children were full of what they would do if they won but not one said they would make sure I was okay. Makes one think.
Still in Portugal 20% tax is taken off any lottery win over €5K so the winner would not have received £76 million here

Trust me to have a funny thought------a swift visit to a solicitor to organise/rearrange my Will in case I suddenly died of shock at such an amount otherwise all the " unknown " relatives would be descending causing grief to the family.

Family first then charities. What would I want with millions at my age? I'd have a gardener to do the heavy work and a designer to do the house out from top to bottom in cottage garden style.

Assuming that we're talking about millions, I'd refuse all publicity and not tell a soul. I'd help our AC who rent to buy properties. I'd give all AC some money to cover the grandchildren's education/university fees etc. I would definitely make donations to charities, and ensure our final years care was covered. I'd probably also take financial advice on how to invest the remainder so that our C would not be penalised by inheritance. Money doesn't necessarily bring happiness but it can provide security and comfort.

I heard someone comment last night ‘trust him to be a builder, no wonder he was six weeks late’. Cue much laughter round the table!

If it was several million, I’d open and fund a school for girls in Africa or Afghanistan. I’d buy a house for my daughter and a house with a bit of land for us so that we can rescue goats and pigs.

I certainly wouldn't go public. £79m is such a huge sum - I don't think I could get my head round it. I'd love to give to family and friends - large amounts anonymously - how I don't know.
A plot of land with a house built to my spec wouldn't go amiss. Nothing fancy - no sports cars, helicopters, yachts, etc or daft things which are 'look at me.' I'd worry about hidden pitfalls which are bound to exist. Trust me to fret.

I would buy DD a bungalow in the area she now lives, no more renting, large garden for DGC & make life easier for her OH who is disabled. Buy DD a new car. Pay for a nice holiday abroad for my family.

I don't want to move but my home needs decorating & new carpets etc. I would put everything apart from some clothes & personal papers into storage whilst the work was done. Have my small garden landscaped with a greenhouse & new shed. Replace old fencing.

I would give money to local charities & the larger ones I already support.

I would invest money for DGSs & make sure I had sufficient invested for my future.

As I only do Thunderball I'm never going to win a huge amount so I can only dream although I don't really want to win such a huge amount, too much to cope with.

Often daydream about this and I have a plan
No matter how big or small half goes daughters and g-children and equal shares for them
Then 10% to charities we already support
10% to friends and distant replies

Sort out the children and grandchildren (mortgages etc.), move house and, if hubby still not wanting to move, sort him out financially and go on my own. Give the rest to charity

First Id attempt to keep quiet about it . Second I’d go straight to Heathrow and book a first class flight to NY, turn up on my son’s doorstep and suprise him. Third, I’d go on an expensive cruise with a wardrobe of new clothes and spend a couple of weeks deciding what to do. Once I’d cleared the children’s mortgages and put money aside for The grandchildren’s education, I’d like to help a small health and education centre in a third world country and then I’d feel satisfied that the money had helped people.

OH i will have to think about this one, get back to you later off to take xmas gifts to some of family.

I'd book a World cruise, then sort my family out. Have my garden professionally landscaped, a new kitchen and the house redecorated. Donate to my favourite charities. Sponsor my favourite rugby player! And then I would go on holiday again.

I'd move to the Lake District. I wouldn't mind buying somewhere like Beatrix Potters "Hilltop Farm"........ah, lovely!

If I'd won £76 million I'd buy each of our 3 a nice house and car and then invest the rest to provide income. I'd have to re do my will too!!!

Ansolutely agree, tick No Publicity box. Apart from that, spread it around. If it was a much as the recent winner got - £76 million - I would set up a charitable foundation so that the interest could be distributed every year.

I am quite happy with my existing house and car, although it would mean we could build the extension we have just got planning permission for, without needing to sort out any financing.

Can I be considered if I helped with chores?

I have all I want and need but winning a very large amount would not feel like my money. I would give some to my local council to share between the bin lads and all the environmental health department as they are super efficient. I'd also have a recurring amount paid to have more flower baskets and tubs planted in the nearby town and looked after by a designated local company.
Sally Army and Shelter would get a recurring sum. My AC would each have an amount deposited in their banks (anonymously) as I wouldn't want them to ask for more if they thought I won many millions. One, I know, might go mad with the money and look for more.
GC would have an amount salted away which could be accessed when they reach 30 and GGC also.
I might have a tiny house (on a trailer) built in Queensland and use it for travelling around that country but that's something which costs very little and I might do anyway in the next year or two. I've no hankering for huge unmanageable houses and would never buy a brand new car...
I'm pretty sorted in my life right now and like shopping in H&M, Zara and High Street shops so that wouldn't change.
Buying a horse might be an idea and I would definitely surprise my close friends with an all expenses paid holiday anywhere in the world with a partner.
All in all, I wouldn't go mad as I said, I have a good life right now and a generous ex. No more needed.
