My little granddaughter loves this song and is always asking her mummy (or me if she's having a sleepover) to sing it to her in bed after her story.
It's such a lovely song, with so much mental imagery and I thought, wouldn't it be lovely to have a book depicting all the scenes in the song?
So, Mr Google to the rescue! I found a lovely picture book with all the words of the song. Perfect I thought!
So anyway, it arrived yesterday, and I sat and looked through it all. Hmm. I don't know how familiar you all are with the words of this song? The third verse starts, "Dragons live forever, but not so little boys". In the book this has been amended to read, "Dragons live forever, but not so little girls and boys"
. Oh let's not offend all the little girls out there - they must be included as well! Never mind the fact that Jackie Paper is clearly depicted as a little boy. Why didn't they rewrite the entire song to have Jackie and Jillie Paper? They didn't seem to care that the reworked line doesn't scan with the melody, so what was stopping them? Can you tell this has made me cross, haha?
Needless to say, I shall not be including the additional words when I read the book to her!
