It's an " eera ". No wonder kids can't speak properly if they're being taught the wrong pronunciations.I despair !

Surely that is just a regional pronunciation. I had a Scottish colleague who made the word poetry sound far more poetic than my RP..

Yep, I'm also an eeera as in Vera.
However i have heard others say it as erra like Sarah.

I am a bit tired of "there is no r in bath" because Southerners say bath with a long a but no r; they don't day barth. And yes, I say era, haemorrhoid, leukaemia and even anaemia with a long e, but not usually in the same sentence.

My Manchester relatives pronunce ‘hospital’ as hospikal my friend from Manchester pronounces it like that, and little as likal (she is an educated woman!)

Era is from the Latin aera (which can be written with a ligature). I've heard is pronounced either way in American English.

If you look at this list of words which include ae, you start to notice how pronunciation varies e.g hæmorrhoid and leukæmia. Both words have been simplified in American English to replace the ligature with the letter e but I think both countries use short e and long e respectively when spoken.

Nope I don’t think your wrong maw I would pronounce it the same as you. I think it’s often a case of where in the country you come from and your accent makes for how we pronounce our words. My Manchester relatives pronunce ‘hospital’ as hospikal and don’t get me started on the southern (my children included) ‘barth’ when thereis no ‘r’ in bath. I’m too tired to make a list of my wonderful Irish pronunciations, my husbands ‘tree’ rather than three still causes lots of laughter. We’re a mixed bunch of accents here
