Oh dear I seem to have misplaced my usual stoic calm. I've had some health problems recently and I think the sedation I had at the hospital earlier this week has left me feeling rather fragile. This whole time of Remembrance is always difficult, but I'm not normally undone by it and yet this year has been particularly hard. I haven't even felt able to join in with local events because I know I'll just cry the whole time. I avoided the big commemoration service in town on Friday and went alone to place my poppies afterwards. A poor lady saw my tears and asked if I was okay and I ended up sobbing as I explained that it would have been my daughter's wedding anniversary, but her husband was killed in Afghanistan. I think I ruined her day, but she was very kind.

And now I'm on tenterhooks waiting for my son to call with news of my lovely daughter-in-law who is two days short of her due date and had severe haemorrhaging in the night. She's now in hospital and labour has started, but I'm anxious rather than excited. We've picked up their dog and brought him home with us (he's very used to staying here) and although he is usually very calm and placid he is now nervously pacing and whining around the room; he's obviously picked up on everyone's anxiety. Having texted earlier fairly regularly my son has not sent or responded to a text for almost two hours now and I can't help but worry.

The Wonderful Man is throwing himself into doing jobs around the house, but I know that it's displacement activity because he's anxious. I've tried to keep busy, but now all I can do is watch my phone - and pray!

Congratulations on your new grandchild! Such a relief to know everyone concerned is well x

I think when health worries are lurking it colours and exaggerates our emotions. I hope your medics can offer you positive help and that the safe arrival of your DGD gives you the emotional boost you deserve.

As I watched the parade yesterday the camera picked out a wee lad of 8, taking part with his mother and grandfather. That brought to mind your family and thoughts of your work with the charity for bereaved children.
A new baby is just wonderful and will strengthen the bonds of a happy and very united family.
Congratulations on the birth of your granddaughter.

Our lovely granddaughter is safely here!

Thank you all for your good wishes. In the end we went to join the other grandparents at the home of our son and daughter-in-law, where we waited together over a delicious meal and a glass of wine. (Cooked and served by the other grandparents who are also dear friends.) Fortunately our son's house is on the same road as the hospital and so when the news of baby's safe delivery finally came through we were able to walk there and finally got to meet our darling granddaughter at 11.15pm. (The lovely hospital staff allowed all four of us in at the same time and just left us alone.)

My daughter-in-law had a rough time of it as the baby weighs a whopping 9lb! She has lots of very dark hair and looks like my side of the family right now. Each of my children have a child with a fairly unique name and this one is no exception, I would like to share it, but it's so unusual that it would make us too easily identifiable. The middle names are for the two great grandmothers who will be thrilled when they find out tomorrow. My mother-in-law has been a wonderful grandmother and I'm touched that my son has chosen to honour her this way. I know my lovely daughter-in-law is equally close to her nana too. Both are old fashioned names, but enjoying a resurgence at the moment.

Now the adrenaline has dissipated and I'm off to bed. What an emotional roller coaster of a day; thanks for hand-holding me through it.

I’ve only just seen your post grannyA, what a time you’re having, so many conflicting feelings in the same day and especially hard if you’re feeling a bit vulnerable in yourself. Hope you have some happy news soon and can rest easy, thinking of you x

grannyactivist this is a very poignant time of year - and this year especially I have found myself welling up because of television programmes about all the people lost in various wars. Your daughter is a war widow so it's even more difficult for you. And a baby on the way - and complications too!

It's no wonder you are feeling fraught and anxious. I do hope you have some good news soon from the hospital and a new baby to love before long. He or she coming into the world safely is sure to be a tonic for you.

It is difficult to rest until you know all is well. I expect many of us know just how you feel. The waiting game is hard, especially after complications.

Your DIL and son are being well looked after. Do look after yourself and your man - and know that those servicemen and women - and your SIL -who lost their lives during conflict have been in the hearts and minds of so many of us today.

My best wishes to you all, and lots of positive thoughts winging their way from me to you. flowers
