dr who and the politically correct script writers

I’ve been a Dr Who fan since I was a little girl. I’ve hidden behind the sofa when the Daleks were on screen. I’ve had nightmares about Cybermen. I was unnerved by the Weeping Angels. I’ve loved each and every one of the incarnations of the Dr, particularly David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston. I was thrilled when it was announced that the new Dr would be female. About time too.
But oh dear, they are laying it on thick. Each week feels like a lecture-racism, the environment, sexism. I await transgenderism. While I accept that some political statements are bound to happen, it’s the clumsy way they are shoehorned into each episode. It’s almost as though the producers are standing by with a clip board and checklist.
It makes me want to keep a check list of my own to see how many isms’ can be piled into each episode.
By the way, I love the new female incarnation

I think they are doing a great job. To keep something fresh like this after 50 years is brilliant and they are succeeding. Rosa Parks episode was great. This reminds me I need to catch up on an episode.

As lifelong Dr Who fan I too am about to give up. I don’t know if it is the script or her acting but I find Jody Whittaker as irritating as an untrained puppy. Although the Rosa Parks episode was good, I want escapism, not a history lesson! Bring back David Tennant.

I'm not very keen on the new Dr Who. She's extremely annoying and trying much too hard and it was completely unnecessary to cast a woman in the role.. The BBC seeks to indoctrinate its left wing diversity agenda at every opportunity, Did anyone also notice when the baddie asked his worker, 'Who are you?' She replied, 'I'm your niece's wife'.

Also, in a large number of the adverts now couples are mixed races or the main characters are black. It's far disproportionate to the ratio of the UK population (or so we're told). All the white actors/actresses will be out of work soon! On a positive note, some comedians are experiencing a downturn in sales in the towns (not cities) because a lot of their audiences are fed of paying to listen to their leftie (anti Brexit) banter.

Afraid I don't like some of the other drama's either. I watch TV to be taken out of reality not terrified. Did not like Bodyguard or The Cry and there are some similar ones coming up I believe.

If BBC want to charge Pensioners I shall ask to opt out.

lemongrove Tue 30-Oct-18 13:36:32

Oh, yes, Quizqueen ( your neices wife) grin that confused me for a second when watching the show.

I do agree, Petunia, the "messages" are laid on a bit thick - but I still enjoyed the storyline.

GabriellaG Tue 30-Oct-18 13:51:53

I couldn't envisage anything more mind-numbingly crass to watch. Absolute rubbish.

annodomini Tue 30-Oct-18 13:52:50

Isn't it funny that so many posters on this thread are objecting to the projection of PC or 'leftist' views in Dr Who, while many posters on this forum and on Facebook accuse the BBC of right wing/pro Brexit bias.

quizqueen I cannot comment on specifics as I do not watch Dr Who but your post makes you sound as if you prefer we were in 1950s racist / sexist era! I have many friends and relatvies in mixed race families & you can bet the advertisers, will have done careful research to get the best response to the campaign. Nothing to do with PC ..just capitalist profit.

sroge Tue 30-Oct-18 15:31:31

I haven't watched Dr Who since I was a child in the 60s but I love it now. Political correctness notwithstanding shockwink

mcem Tue 30-Oct-18 16:00:46

I was surprised by the reference to political correctness (hate the phrase) in Upstart Crow. I've always seen it as good old traditional satire.
Mind you all the grumbling about political correctness is becoming boring and is often an easy way out of discussing topics intelligently!
Just stick the pc label on and feel smug that your own non-pc opinions are valid!

lemongrove Tue 30-Oct-18 16:07:07

I hadn’t noticed any at all in Upstart Crow either, may have to watch them all again to see ( no hardship.)

lemongrove Tue 30-Oct-18 16:16:38

I suppose what we have to remember is that Dr Who is really aimed at older children, so a moral or two doesn’t go amiss. As long as every episode isn’t a beating about the head with a message.

Day6 Tue 30-Oct-18 16:36:00

PECS, are you being deliberately obtuse?

"quizqueen I cannot comment on specifics as I do not watch Dr Who but your post makes you sound as if you prefer we were in 1950s racist / sexist era! "

What complete tosh - and offensive too. A clever political agenda going on there - IE: like it, approve of it, lap it up or be seen to be racist and sexist.

People are objecting to a disproportionate (extremely disproportionate) view of the world given through the BBCs left-wing, politically correct lens.

An alien looking in would think that most UK families are dark skinned or mixed race and that every one of them had a gay or disabled family member.

The BBCs diversity agenda is infiltrating everything. People want sensible representation, not saturation. That makes no one sexist, homophobic, racist etc, etc, etc.

Trust a left winger like you to suggest it!

oldbatty Tue 30-Oct-18 16:47:07

Also, in a large number of the adverts now couples are mixed races or the main characters are black. It's far disproportionate to the ratio of the UK population (or so we're told)

Which are these adverts and who told you people in adverts are not a representation of the racial mix in the UK please?

lemongrove Tue 30-Oct-18 16:51:23

Some tv programmes are showing shall we say positive discrimination by using all women portrayed in top jobs( the Bodyguard) which we know isn’t true.

PECS Tue 30-Oct-18 18:58:01

No I am not Day 6 I actually did find the comments suggesting modern adverts reflecting multicultural Britain were somehow inappropriate quite offensive and reminiscent of bigoted thinking of the right wing in the 50s .
I do not listen to R4 Today programme anymore or Question Time because I find it is very pro Brexit and frequently promoting right wing policies. hmm

GrandmaKT Tue 30-Oct-18 20:32:12

I like the new female doctor. Quizqueen, you say it was completely unnecessary to cast a woman in the role - I see it as a natural decision (albeit rather late in coming). After all 50% of the population and over 50% of doctors are female!
The preachy story-lines do rather grate. I suppose if they are encouraging conversation and bringing topics to the fore then that is a good thing, but it is very clumsily done.
I am concerned that the change in the focus of the scripts has happened at the same time as the first female doctor - people will associate the two and we will hear the usual accusations of nagging women!

Grandma2213 Tue 30-Oct-18 23:06:18

I must be very naive or unobservant. I watch the series to be taken out of the world, entertained and quite enjoy a bit of overt education as well as in the Rosa Parks story. I frankly rarely notice the colour or sexuality of the characters as it does not seem relevant to me. Example... I completely fell for John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness which caused my brother great amusement when he pointed out he was clearly gay.

GabriellaG Wed 31-Oct-18 00:17:04

I'll never be pc, don't agree with mixes or sameies (my word) or anything other than the normal order as it was meant to be.
I do agree with the minority voice on here who say that some ads, programmes and companies seem determined to be as stupidly inclusive as possible. What other countries include someone of every racial background in their ads? Where I live, it would stand out like the proverbial sore thumb and I have mentioned it, onky to be met with a look and a wall of silence.

GabriellaG Wed 31-Oct-18 00:17:36

*only blush

GabriellaG Wed 31-Oct-18 00:22:16

I must live in a backwater, albeit a very exclusive backwater. There is no racial mix here.

muffinthemoo Wed 31-Oct-18 00:47:06

What is “mixes or sameies” please?

GabriellaG Wed 31-Oct-18 01:06:08

Muffin
Mixed race/gender and ss relationships.

Day6 Wed 31-Oct-18 01:28:16

Most of us are aware we live in a multicultural society GabriellaG and have no qualms about that or any sort of diversity. I am glad we live in a more equal, fairer, more enlightened UK. People are people. You may have a problem with people different in any way from you, but I don't.

What is being objected to is the way the BBC's (and Channel4s) OTT politically correct agenda is infiltrating scripts and dramas to the point where it is stilted, disproportionate and patronising.

We are being lectured, having to digest overtly politically correct messages and it is actually counter-productive and totally unnecessary. It's a turn off. Subtlety is not the forte of left wing producers or script-writers unfortunately.
