“Wives create their husbands”

Just started reading a book called “Four letters of love” by Niall Williams, and this paragraph made me smile -
Wives create their husbands. They begin with that rough raw material, that blundering, well-meaning and handsome youthfulness they have fallen in love with, and then commence the forty years of unstinting labour it takes to make the man with whom they can live

And - By the time my father had been three times promoted, I imagine my mother believed her work with him was over. He no longer squeezed toothpaste from the middle, never came from the garden on to the cream-coloured carpet she had bought for the hall without removing his shoes, never attempted to wear the same socks or underpants two days running, bathe less than four times a week, nor leave the toilet seat up after urinating.

I find it hard to believe that ANYONE here or anywhere else has a perfect husband any more than any husband has a perfect wife!! Neither of us is perfect far from it, but like you Pamela, we understand each other perfectly and rub along just fine!!

My husband would never post on here. He can’t understand why on Earth I do but he’s not averse to a bit of teasing now and.again
For all of you who have totally perfect husbands that never irritate . Well done.
For all wives on here who never irritate their husbands. Well done.
Both my DH and I have our funny little ways but we love each other and have a very good relationship as, I would imagine, do the others on here who don’t think they are being patronising.

I didn’t create my husband. Why would I have chosen to make a man like that? Leaving him was the best thing I ever did.

"She doesn't jump to it when the oven beeps because she's on the computer - what on earth can she be doing"?

nigglynellie Thu 18-Oct-18 16:02:01

Me neither!! He wouldn't though as he would consider posting on here a bit, well, naff!!

Jalima1108 Thu 18-Oct-18 15:00:15

wouldn’t be at all acceptable if it was the other way around!!

I don't mind if DH posts on here about my shortcomings grin

Jalima- sometimes our house looks like it’s been burgled!
Pamela the odd thing is that his end of the office is very tidy whilst mine is chaos (I did attempt to tidy up today but then more paperwork arrived!).
His wardrobe, drawers etc are all tidy inside so I wonder if he leaves the doors and drawers open all the time to show how tidy they are
And leaves the dirty water in the sink to show that 'yes, he has washed up - again'.
confused

Couldn’t agree more with Eloethan and Shortlegs, unbelievably patronizing attitudes towards men here..... wouldn’t be at all acceptable if it was the other way around!!

Fennel: I agree, my husband is so selfish that I have no expectations of him. He's what my mother would call: "A small parcel." No friends, doesn't engage, stingy, never initiates any outings or fun, won't go out for a meal: how do you think he will be remembered? Without my women friends for consolation I would have hit him over the head with a rolling pin years ago.

123kitty, ?????!!!

You can only change a male is when he's wearing nappies.

eazybee Thu 18-Oct-18 09:00:20

Very patronising, (the original premise).

PamelaJ1 Thu 18-Oct-18 07:08:07

Jalima- sometimes our house looks like it’s been burgled!
Like you I’m trained and simply quietly, quiet is important, shut all the wardrobe doors a drawers.
It’s only when he’s left an unexpected one open and I walk into it that I respond.
Then, of course, I share the bruise again and again and........?

Grampie Thu 18-Oct-18 05:45:10

the grace not to grace

Grampie Thu 18-Oct-18 05:44:28

We each have to grace to change ourselves to better love each other.

But that line will likely sell fewer books.

Jalima1108 Wed 17-Oct-18 23:46:44

This is all going on the assumption that you need to change your man to suit you. How about just taking him on as he is and finding a way to fit in with that?

*polyester shock
That would mean that the woman would have to change her ways and we know that women are always right!

“She sinks into his arms and ends up with her arms in his sink” So true.

nigglynellie Wed 17-Oct-18 21:43:37

It is to me too!! ??

MissAdventure Wed 17-Oct-18 21:10:46

I love these threads! grin
Its glaringly obvious that they're tongue in cheek.
Well... to me it is.

LuckyFour Wed 17-Oct-18 20:57:52

Polyester57, take him on as he is? Are you mad?

mamaa Wed 17-Oct-18 16:44:43

Acceptance of each other’s ‘foibles’ and separate bathrooms seems to work in our house! Both have traits that would drive the other mad if we concentrated on them, but have learnt to ignore and accept! smile

Jalima1108 Wed 17-Oct-18 15:28:18

I have trained myself over the years to shut all the cupboard doors and drawers that DH leaves open and to empty the dirty water from the sink after he has washed up.

I've given up trying to train him to shut them and to clean the sink after washing up (at least he washes up sometimes).

I can only speak for him, not men in general as my oldest Db was completely different.

Happiyogi Wed 17-Oct-18 15:22:54

Polly48 How can I have been unaware of the existence of a talent like Niall Williams? I've just read a couple of chapters online (History of the Rain) and am completely hooked!

Many thanks for the introduction.

PamelaJ1 Wed 17-Oct-18 14:19:45

Grandad, no they aren’t.
If asked my DH would say I drive him up the wall because I never put the phone back on it’s charger.
We all have our little ways. Thank goodness my husband has a SOH.

Sheilasue Wed 17-Oct-18 14:05:03

She obviously had the right touch. Lucky lady.
