What is it with men and shorts

One of my sons popped into see us yesterday, we were feeling quite cold having just returned from southern Spain, and he was in shorts! I did wonder it was wet and drizzly

Our postie's all wear shorts all year round - I read once that there is a competition between them all round the country.

A friend of my son's has worn shorts for as long as I've known him - he's probably nearing 50 now and still has his long blond hair as well. They suit him and are part of his personality - I've only seen him in a suit once for son's wedding. My husband doesn't own a pair of shorts - not really sure his figure would suit them

My DH ( a cyclist of many years) wears shorts except when I make him put on a pair of longs if it's an appropriate occasion. He went to the footie yesterday in pouring rain and strong winds in them and thought nothing of it.

However he has very nice shaped and tanned legs (no prominent veins) and also he is a tough Northener and seldom wears a coat either! Our DS is like his Dad too and also has very nice shaped, tanned legs.

DH wore shorts indoors all year round, but drew the line at going out in them in winter!

It's not so much the shorts I object to, it's wearing them inappropriately. Seeing men in restaurants, out shopping etc. who spend half their life in the gym and only ever wear vests, to show off their newly acquired muscles. Put some clothes on for goodness sake! ?

Men have higher metabolic rates (hence the shorts) than women (hence the cold feet) so they keep warmer - and eat more!

Hey Sodapop, maybe your husband could rub that concoction on a bald mans head. Maybe it would make the hair grow back, ha.ha. So funny.

My do has always had his personal central heating - though perhaps less efficient in the last few years - and will wear shorts whenever possible, inc. just the other day. His legs are perfectly presentable so it's fine with me. (Wish I could say the same for mine! I won't be seen dead in shorts nowadays.)

I know what you mean, though - there was a man who used to come into the library where I worked, who wore them all year round, even with snow on the ground. He was (probably still is) an extreme eco-warrior, evidently didn't believe in shampoo, either. His hair didn't look dirty, but you could smell it - that horrible unwashed pong that's rare nowadays - from quite a few feet away. BTW he wasn't homeless or anything, in case anyone's wondering.

My husband is always in shorts! Only puts trousers on when temps drop now freezing, he's a builder and is still leaving the house each day in shorts and T shirt! My nephew and eldest son are the same

I think the posties have a competition to see who can hold out the longest wearing shorts!! ??

It is definitely not a good look. I see many elderly men sporting bare legs and it really puts me off my lunch!!

My 70year old son wears shorts most of the year and friends say what good legs he has for his age. I always wear dresses or skirts all the year and only wear tights when it is really cold. The thighs come off as soon as I get indoors.

When you think back to our childhoods, girls wore dresses and boys wore shorts. One winter when I was about five my mother send me to school in red wool trousers. The teacher told her it was acceptable. I used to have chapped legs in winter.

My DH wears shorts much of the time. He refuses to wear trainer socks, but since we discovered some ‘almost trainer socks’ this year. That’s what he wears-and looks good too.
As others have said, it’s not that long since girls were not allowed trousers, and we never even had the option of woolly tights as children.

When we were children boys up to the age of 11 never wore long trousers and they never complained of the cold, either.

Strangely enough I remember the same boys, once we had grown up, asking how women managed to exist in skirts and nylon stockings all winter.

I don't like men in shorts, give me a man in a kilt any day of the week instead.

Some men, like some women, look really good in shorts- nicely shaped legs are vital. (I never wear them) We have a man locally who must be in his 50s/60s who wear the shortest shorts that I have ever seen for most of the year. They are basically knickers and although he has very good legs he just gives me the creeps.

I have no problem seeing men's legs--sometimes it is a very nice view!
I confess I wear shorts a lot myself. I'm not keen on trousers anyway & they make a change from skirts-I'm wearing a pair now.
Whatever you feel comfortable in is fine as long as it's clean.

I should have added that I rarely feel the cold. Neither of my sons do either & wear shorts on winter unless it is raining or snowing.

My middle-aged DSs wear shorts in summer, but usually the knee-length baggy kind which I abhor and say so, but why listen to mum! However, the last time I saw DS1, on a lovely sunny day, he was wearing a smart pair of chino shorts, above the knee. He is very fit, nicely tanned and has legs that should be seen! His brother is less fit-looking, but wears shorts anyway.

My favourite saying when I see someone inappropriately dressed in bad weather is 'I hope they get the weather they're expecting ' ?
