Well, apparently, we are definitely behind the times!

My phone is Do not disturb 11pm-7am. you can turn off notifications but there is so much to know with technology. What I like about messenger and whatsapp is you can send photos free. With texts you have to pay For long conversation and multiple photos email is still better. My son was able to take me on a tour of his new house with his phone. fantastic.
I'm not sure I can take in much more though. Technology is moving too much too fast. I hate not knowing everything. I remember doing ECDL and I thought I was so clever!

Turn off the notifications then. I only know I've got WhatsApp if I look at my phone.

I recently joined a choir which uses WhatsApp to communicate, so I 'signed up.' It is driving me crazy. Messages are constantly pinging onto my phone and I-pad. I have to check them in case they are important, but 99% of them are pure trivia. Someone posts a a comment, then almost everyone else piles in with their twopence-worth, including umpteen 'Happy Birthday's' to whoever happens to be celebrating at the time.
Give me email every time!

Greyduster you can mute notifications from individual group chats in Whatsapp if you press the 3 dots in the top right corner once you go into your group. The icons will still appear to show you have received messages.

This used to drive me crazy too with notifications pinging at all times.

Greyduster you can leave the WhatsApp group if you want to. Open the group chat and tap the top line which gives the group info, scroll down and you’ll see the option to exit group.

I can send texts from my iPad. My typing is bad anyway and it's even worse on my iPhone!

I usually message or watsapp friends and family. Only a few work emails usually for things subject to data protection where I have a specific work email.

I still use email to younger people because for longer messages it’s easier to use an iPad keyboard. I then have to text or WhatsApp them to say I have emailed or they won’t pick it up. Ridiculous but it works. I have a very close relative who only uses her iPhone for messages and her texts look illiterate which is something I would avoid at all costs.

We were out with family for lunch last Sunday and my niece (35) held her phone up to show over 3000 unread e-mails

Ooh, Phoenix, I wrote two cheques last month. The last one prior to that had been a year ago and to the same person. I also had to write a second cheque to a company that didn't seem to have any alternative facility for payment, unless I wanted to send a postal order.

I've been firmly told that there's no point in emailing my GC because they don't look at their emails. So I'm on WhatsApp for family except for my dinosaur sisters who don't yet have smart phones.

I now feel at being such a dinosaur! Having said that, I communicate with most of my friends by email.

And for those that feel they would never disclose bank account details, take a look at you cheque book!

Ok, it's probably becoming increasingly rare that you actually write one, but the recipient has your sort code and account number right there on that piece of paper!

FB gets hacked and they own WhatsApp too. Why do I need it? I don't.
I manage perfectly well with email and texts and can send photos with emails if I wanted to.
I'm au fait with all the stuff you can do and precautions you can take but I have no interest.
I do everything on my phone so I'm no slouch when it comes to technical stuff but thanks for letting me know.

My friends & DD use FB Messanger for most of our communications. I also use mobile phone & text a lot, rarely use landline except for DM who hasn't any modern technology (she is 89).

I do use email a lot but would never send Bank details as they are not regarded as being secure. I don't use WatsApp or Twitter.

I use FB to keep in touch with friends & family

The big advantage with WhatsApp is that pic's can be exchanged safely and free.

I do Facebook (with appropriate privacy settings) and WhatsApp, but can't get my head round Twitter. Why would the world at large want to hear about my every thought and/or deed? I just don't get it.

Honestly Phoenix... E-mails....they have become like the post that drops through the letter-box...for junk mail only! I'm 68 and use Whatsapp all the time as you can 'talk' a message on it or text a messages , and send photos free. The talking thing is great....really ...you should download it and give it a try!

Thank you. I've just uploaded WhatsApp to my PC, much better than fiddling with a tiny phone keypad. Dead easy to do.

There’s another App called Viber which works in a similar way to WhatsApp but is not owned by Facebook so I trust it more! www.viber.com/about/

We use it in our family for chats, photos and video calls.

I use e mails a lot, keeping connection with my friends in the UK, but my children and their Husbands and Wives usually use messenger,I find messenger too messy trying to find the keys on my phone, but dont mind using it on Facebook on my Computer, e mails I can say much more too.

I use WhatsApp & Messenger all the time - texts are impossible at our house as any company's mobile coverage is really poor. You may be lucky if you stand on tiptoe on the top rung if the garden gate....

I'd never give my bank details via email - they could so easily get waylaid into the wrong hands.
