You are quite right that the man shouldn't have spoken to you so rudely. He could have just said "no thank you".

I have passed on tickets occasionally in the past and accepted them but I stopped a few years ago because someone I know got caught passing on her ticket and received a hefty fine. It is actually illegal.

When I refuse tickets, I am always polite and express appreciation. The man should have done the same when you approached him.

Our parking tickets are the stick on ones so if I'm near the pay station and have some time unused on my ticket I stick it on there

We have been given tickets by other people and likewise given them to others. Motorists are well and truly ripped off when it comes to parking costs. It feels like a nice little gesture to offer a ticket to someone else or be offered one. Unfortunately a lot of councils have now cottoned on to this and installed number plate recognition of the sort were you have to key in your own number plate when getting your ticket. Plain greed on their part. Hope you enjoyed your cream cake though.

What a difference to our experience in a Spanish town . We found a place in a car park, went to pay when a lovely gent tried to give us his ticket because it had 2 hrs left on it. It had his registration on the ticket so he took us to the machine to change his registration to ours. He couldn't do it so he called the attendant who did it for him!
Our Spanish is limited but we were able to thank him profusely for 2 hrs free parking. We will certainly return!

QQ what a good idea! I will tell our council immediately. Lidl has recent introduced the number plate recognition thing which has been a blow for people visiting the health centre next door.
It got so bad with £90 fines being dished out to distressed 90yr old's that I believe Lidl has had to allow a couple of spaces though they are within their rights as they own their carpark.
Another parking area has been reduced to 30 mins much to the delight of local shop keepers and what's more it is enforced.
The cars which used to block the spaces all the time have had to go elsewhere.
Nannyme I would have done as you did and I hate rules which stop people being generous.

We have our number plate /picture taken when we enter the hospital . It often takes ages to find a space during busy times (especially visiting ). If you are lucky enough to find a space you need to calculate what time you entered the car park ( not when you found a space) and pay how much you think you might need . Therefore most people way over calculate for fear of being “got” . The evil eye then photographs you leaving the car park and checks that you have paid enough between the two points . This results in £1000’s worth of fines every year . One particularly naughty thing is that if you enter and fail to find a space then drive out you will be fined ! Great innit ?

Was at hospital last week when a motorist who was leaving car parked offered his ticket with 4 hours still left on it. For my anticipated 2hour appointment I would have paid £3. On going to car park when leaving a young couple were going tobticket machine when I offered the ticket to them. They were so grateful saying they could just about afford to pay for parking for an hour goubg to visit girl's dad who was seriously ill. Someone did me a favour and I passed it on. If parking t a hospital wasn't so expensive people wouldn't hand tickets over. I do know tickets are not transferable.

Well our council needs to screw as much as they can from the motorist. £1.40 per hour to park in the town with plenty of those eagle eyed “wanna be coppers” walking around ready to pounce . The other car parks including our hospital use Evil Eye ....what a money spinner . Must pay for quite a few council bashes .

Car parks and their charges can be the biggest scam out.
But here's the reverse; I frequently park in Wimborne town centre: 60p for one hour, 70p for two, and a colossal 80p for three hours. Which is why I do most of my shopping in Wimborne if possible.

You couldn't do that where I live as you have to put your registration number into the machine before parking.

QQ and Blinko we had annual car park passes which allowed us to park for 2 hours in any of our local council car parks but then the local traders didn't like that visitors had to pay about 50p an hour and got it changed. They seemed to think that visitors wouldn't come if they had to pay more to park although I have never checked the cost of parking when visiting a pretty town. The result was that our annual ticket cost went up by 60% so I didn't buy one and went less often into town to shop.

I have on occasion offered and accepted the odd ticket, but I know that the wardens are ever more eagle eyed (photographing number plates) and I imagine OP while meaning well, was unaware she was both in danger of a penalty for herself and the other driver.
However, each to their own. I don’t go a bundle on self righteous lexicographical rectitude myself.

Its being illegal does not make it wrong. Legality is not the same as rightness where real ethics are concerned.

I always pass my ticket to someone else if there's time left on it. It's just the done thing isn't it? That man was rude. Please don't let him annoy you, and keep on what you've been doing.

If someone tried to induce me to break the law I would be angry. I wouldn't know if you were a habitual lawbreaker, or perhaps an undercover cop.

Lilyflower, that is a very sweeping, and in my view, ill informed comment! What is your evidence for that?

Day6 I would not mention that it was an almost empty car park as there would be no reason that you had to park over the line because of the car in the next bay.

The powers that be may well say that tickets are not transferable. However, I take the view that when one is purchased, a parking space has been rented for that period of time. If the renter is leaving with time remaining, it’s quite reasonable to pass it on! I have never been one for blindly obeying rules. I feel that if we all did that, the path could lead to Orwell’s 1984!

If, as you wrote, it was a virtually empty car park, why did you park next to a car which was parked at a 'wonky angle'? It makes no sense to do that, as you must have noticed when driving into the space.

Quizqueen, where do you live? Will be moving there pronto! Sometimes tickets are transferable, you just have to read the small print. We recently used the carpark for Lindisfarne castle and as we hadn't used up all the time, passed it on to another motorist who was very grateful. Had quite a bit of money on it so was hoping she was going to offer part of the cost but no such luck! Still, it was my good deed for the day. Hate the ones which require you to put registration number in too.

Just to point out that this sort of petty, official bullying is what we will all be in for in every area of our lives if people are foolish enough to vote for the extreme left candidate in the next election.
