Sweets I miss

I loved Aztec bars, they had a malty flavoured layer like a Mars bar. Cherry lips, Palma violets, Bar 6, sugar mice (with a string tail) traffic light lollies that changed colour as you licked them. No wonder I had lost 4 teeth by the time I was 10

We used to call the twigs "sticky lice" don't know why. The van selling Household cleaning things had them as well as sweet false teeth! Ken Dodd's dad used to sell them as well with Aunt Sally which we blew bubbles with.

Jane 43, we used to call those liquorice flavoured twigs, Spanish Wood, and they were lovely.
Does anyone also remember:
Tiger Nuts.
Tiffin bars.
Frys 5 boys chocolate which had photos of a little boy displaying all kinds of emotions. My favourite.
Chocolate tools i.e.: spanners etc that cost 1d in old money.
3d ice lollies which we called Three D.
Shrimps, which had a weird texture, but we ate them regardless.
'Chummy Bags'.
If anyone remembers these, I would love to hear from them as so far, I have not met anyone that does. It was a little bag of sweets in a cellophane bag tied with a liquorice lace.
They were sold at shop near our school in London for 3d in old money.

Ooo yes, the milk tray bar. That was a treat as it was more expensive than the sweets in the jars. I too remember when walnut whips had a walnut at the bottom. They usually appear on the shelves at Christmas time in Wilkinsons. I always get my daughter some. I remember sweet cigarettes, bags of brightly coloured rice? chocolate chewing nuts, monkey nuts, sherbert pips, Spanish tobacco which was very sweet, liquorice in shapes of a pipe, catherine wheel, laces. cough candy, pineapple cubes, spangles, Old Jamaica chocolate bar, Roasted almond choc. Bar six. Coloured kali ( sugar crystals) which turned your dipping finger and tongue green, blue etc. Gobstoppers.

We used to have Butter Maple Brazils at Christmas and rum toffees. More recently I have loved liquorice toffee from Thorntons but they don't seem to do it any more.

Oooooh I am slavering reading these posts. I remember the tattiess too. We didn't call them Tobermory tatties, we called them lucky tatties because of the hidden treasure, which was pure rubbish but they did only cost a penny. They were hard as stone. My main memories of childhood sweeties are pan drops and odd fellows in church - only one or two mind, but what a treat.

I remember the Christmas luxury of Newberry Fruits when they were really fruity with a delicious syrup inside. Nowadays they are not a patch on the old ones.
I was brought up during the war when sweets were rationed and my mother used to make peppermint lumps from dried milk, peppermint essence and, I think, golden syrup because sugar was severely rationed. I wish I had the recipe for those. I found a recipe on line but it was nothing like my memory of them.

In my town of Conwy we have a sweet shop and it sells only the old fashioned sweets, there is always a customer in the shop.

Oh yes! Flying saucers and those big bars of 'honeycomb'! Wonderful!

Slabs of Palm toffee with banana stripe. Coconut mushrooms, tea cakes ( flat, brown and coconut) Aztec bar, chocolate with cherry and coconut filling. I see a theme developing. Aniseed balls, pear drops and a bag of Cadburys Misshape chocolates.

I stole some chocolate that I found in my mum's drawer. I got my punishment though - it was Exlax (probably wrong spelling).

This has reminded me of an incident hidden deep in my guilty conscience. My granny lived with us and when she was busy one day I crept into her bedroom (entry always forbidden) found a bag of sweeties and pinched one, they were menthol and eucalyptus twists, very smelly when sucked, which rather gave the game away. Must add I've never eaten one since. The rest of you seem to have much sweeter memories

We used to call the liquorice root that you chewed Spanish Wood, loved it and I have Victory V in my handbag right now. You can still get a lot of the old sweets via the internet, when I was working abroad on my 60th birthday a friend sent me a huge box of all different sorts of them, a nostalgic taste of childhood. My favourite was parma violets.

Triple Bars! I've been trying to remember the name of those for years - absolutely loved them. Cadbury's did a different one which was just dark and milk layers too but not as nice. They have recently produced those huge bars which are 3 layers - I try very hard not to buy them as I eat the whole lot!

They have just brought out soft versions of the old fruit salad, Black Jacks, sherbet dips and refreshers - the ad was on earlier today and I did see them in the supermarket on Friday but didn't buy them.

I also loved Lucky Numbers, the Milk Tray bars and the boxes of Milk Tray which contained the lime barrel. I used to live near a small tobacconists who also sold sweets and lollies - he gave me the display boxes of chocolates which had been in the window one day - great fun to play shops with!

I remember the Fry's Five Boys bars being in vending machines too and Fry's 5 centre bars. You can still get the mint and original ones so don't know why they don't produce the best one! I did eat a lot of Cadbury's Peppermint Patties when I was pregnant - dark chocolate with mint filling in a round foil about the size of a biscuit! Luckily second time round I craved ice lollies and ice cubes which were much better for my teeth and figure!!

Happy days - still have a sweet tooth and have to resist as much as I can!!

You used to be able to buy chocolate covered honeycomb by the quarter and liquorice sticks that were like twigs, you chewed them until the liquorice flavour disappeared. You used to be able to buy Horlick tablets in a little tin and I too loved the Victory V lozenges and gums. Bluebird toffees were good too.

Cadbury’s Lucky Numbers, sherbet lemons, Everton mints and pear drops were my favourites.

I loved the Cadbury bars that were tray milk chocolates joined together,also the miniature dairy milks.I worked in a sweet shop up to about 10 years ago,we had all the old fashioned jar sweets,sold by the quarter,we changed it to 100g when we went metric.People asked me if I wanted to keep eating sweets,but I didn't want them when I was surrounded by them.We sold Merry Maid toffees,they were popular.

Yes, I do remember Tobemory tatties from your description, but not the name, I think in the Glasgow area we just called them tatties. I loved them too, and so did the dolls in my dolls' house as they benefitted from the toys in the middle of the tattie.

Rowantrees made some absolutely supper fruit drops, but I don't think they were called that. I can't remember the name! They were different flavours and colours packed in the same paper roll.

Daddy kept peppermint centred chocolate bars in his consulting-room desk drawer for child patients, and sometimes his own weans too!

I was mooching in Home Bargains yesterday and came across a huge bag of bonfire toffee! I picked it up, but saw sense (and the dentists bill) so put it sadly back on the shelf.

HunnyBunny yes! I can't for the life of me remember what they were called but I remember sucking the chocolate out of the 'toffee' tube! Where they like a stick? Thinner than a stick of rock and a lovely creamy caramel colour on the outside? Im from Yorkshire. Perhaps they were a regional thing?
