What exactly DOES this teach your kids ?

The thing that stopped you smashing a tennis racket was the knowledge that you sure as hell would never be given another one.

Serena's behaviour was appalling. For somebody who is constantly banging on about motherhood, her temper is worrying.

Kirstie Allsop was dealing with her frustration, not enforcing discipline on her sons.
Whatever happened to confiscation?
Who bought the i-pads in the first place?

As for Serena Williams (another misnomer) her behaviour was ugly and demeaning, and trying to pretend she was defending women's rights is inexcusable.
Sheer bad temper.

I don’t think anyone is trying to pretend her (SW) was defending women’s rights eazybee I am simply trying to make the point that you ( not you personally before I get jumped on) simply cannot judge / punish men and women differently for the same misdeeds.

Yes she was very wrong and sets a very bad example to young people in sport but she was no more wrong than plenty men before her . A legal minefield.

She was wrong to lose her rag. She ought to have put her point calmly.

I am surprised that KA had not invested in the simple system that allows a parent to stop certain devices access to the internet at certain times. Obviously kids can still use downloaded stuff but it does help. Or just have a basket where hand-helds have to reside at certain times. Easy to check without wasting money and resources! A bit of attention seeking "celeb" behaviour!

Re SW..I saw the outburst on the news. It was wrong and very much a prima donna tantrum. It needed to be challenged and sanctioned. As to whether it was more harshly judged than males tennis star tantrums I do not know..I remember MacEnroe tantrums but not what sanctions were handed out. I am unaware of recent male tennis players tantrum-ing but I am not a tennis fan. There should be equal sanctions regardless of M/F but to say her sanction was unfair after that display is nonsense and a rather childish response.

No one is saying that SW’s behaviour was acceptable but what is wrong is judging her differently from white men in particular. There is hard video evidence of this particular umpire ignoring coaching, being abused, having balls thrown at him and guess what all those tennis players had in common? And there was that ridiculous incident last week when a woman player was initially sanctioned for changing her shirt round. SW has suffered enormous abuse - especially racist - over the years. The cartoon in Sydney’s Post newspaper about this incident is disgraceful. For the avoidance of doubt, all sports people should behave better but holding a black woman to higher standards can appear both racist and misogynist.

PECS the reason you are not aware of male ( white) tennis players’ transgressions is that they mostly go unsanctioned and unreported

It’s not childish at all to say her sanction was relatively unfair - it was - note the word ‘relatively’.

I'm not on Twitter, but, normally a big fan of SW, I thought her behaviour didn't do her, or the cause of women's equality, any favours.
As for KA, what a stupid example to set her children.

I am totally in support of equality do not get me wrong. I understand that being a successful black woman will carry with it a whole lot of baggage that being a successful white man does not. And that is not right.
However her behaviour was poor and unprofessional and she deserved a sanction. The place to argue a strong case for better equality is through your professional organisation and it sounds as if this will be tackled now.
I agree , marilieze I might not have heard about poor male behaviour in tennis because it is largely 'accepted' . Institutionalised sexism and racism ?

The great KA is a stroppy madam. I had a long Twitter tooing and froing with her recently because I dared to disagree with her pronouncements on homework. In the end I had to block her. It's her way or the highway! Her poor boys. (and Phil!)

Phil seems to gets on all right with her, on-screen anyway, and he he too professional to say anything else I think. He can go home to his own lovely family anyway.
I feel more sorry for her DH (and the boys).

I must say I am disappointed in Serena Williams, and I have seen male (white) tennis players be penalised for arguing with the umpire, or behaving badly.

Sorry, Serena, you were an inspiration, don't spoil it now. Perhaps she came back too soon. I do realise that mothers everywhere will be saying that they went back to work 2 days after having a baby, but professional tennis is quite a different ball game.

Of course there are male tennis players who have been penalised but the general point is that in general they are less penalised and there is plenty of video footage now on Twitter ( some including this particular umpire) that show worse or as bad behaviour not being addressed. There is both sexism and racism in many of the reactions to SW across the media - as there always have been for her and many other high profile black women. I’m with gb on this - the opinion of BJK is worth something imo.

KA obviously got a rough ride on Twitter as she has deleted her account. Seems that not all publicity is good publicity after all Kirsty :-)

I don’t understand why celebrities want to involve their children in their public profile.
I don’t feel the iPad incident was particularly edifying but surely the damage done to her children by exposing them in the media is more damaging.
She had a private life when she was young, as did many other celebrities, so why not let their children grow up as anonymously as possible?

Having spent a very frustrating afternoon with the pc, the printer, scanning (or not scanning) etc. I can quite see where Kirstie is coming from

Breath deeply Jalima, it's only technology, not children, which is where Kirstie went very very wrong. Anyone who throws their laptop/mobile phone/ipad out the window when they refuse to work properly has my total support. anyone who smashes their children's iPads "non violently" needs to go on a parenting skills course.
