worried about dying

I am not worried about dying.I spend as I wish, go on lots of trips to the UK and love it, but do think wisely before buying large things. I bought a new car three years ago and asked the saleswoman if I was too old to buy a car, her answer was " of course not" it might have been sales talk but she was right I am soon to be 77 and love my car alas it will have to be the last one, wont be able to afford a new one again, and who knows how long one can drive for. Occasionally I think quite sensibly. As others have said you cant take it with you, and I am hoping to be spending for a few years to come.

We are revamping our living room; a lick of paint and a new sofa because the legs keep falling off the current one, which we have had for over 20 years and a professional in to clean carpets and the other upholstered furniture

I suppose we could say, 'Is it worth it?', take all the legs off the current sofa so its base sits on the ground and ignore the slightly grubby chairs and carpets, but we won't. Within the next fortnight the living room will be transformed and I will be very happy bunny. if I kick the bucket by Christmas, so what? I will have had several months of pleasure and enjoyment from my revamped room and after that will not know anything anyway.

I seem to be a bit out of sync here because I’ve never been one for buying or wanting “stuff”. Our home is cosy and comfortable, I wouldn’t live with threadbare carpets and we replace white goods and cars when they’ve had their day, but not because they’re out of fashion. We’d always prioritise doing things and seeing places while we can. I’m more interested in clearing out all the stuff we don’t need now than shopping for more. Not that I ever get round to it.

Yes, Blinko. I have just lost a friend to a sudden and shocking very rare illness. Whilst older than Rachel Bland, she was not old in today's terms and indeed just over a week ago was fit and healthy and full of joi de vivre.

I tell myself to count my blessings.

But, I do not think your fear has anything to do with rationality, nor is open to reason. It is an irrational fear of the kind we all have, and as we all know this kind of belief is strengthened by being shown to be irrational.

Lol I am sure it is rare, but rare is not synonymous with "can't happen" and if you think about it, if something being rare reassured everyone that it was not going to happen to them, then hardly anyone would do the lottery. Pessimists and optimists are a fact of life, we're amongst you! :D

Whilst we might occasionally turn our thoughts to how or when we might die, now's a good time to spare a thought for those who truly go before their time. Rachel Bland in the news today. She was 40. Me, I count my blessings.

My mother (92) is coming home from hospital today, she has been very ill and we really did think that she might die during the first week she was there with a chest infection and heart failure. Since she has been in the community hospital waiting for discharge her thoughts have been turning to .........a new sitting room carpet. I don't think any of us are very logical on this subject. it makes me laugh when DH buys something like a new lawnmower and says "it will see me out".
Returning to my mother, earlier this year I asked if she wanted to come to us for Christmas and she muttered something about being dead before then, speedily followed by acceptance of an invitation to go clothes shopping.

I'd like to throw out most of my clothes and start again with a completely re-planned wardrobe.

Goodness Mollyplop you are my age and I consider myself still quite young! Earlier this year I did nearly die after sepsis was missed following cancer surgery but I lived to tell the tale and the consultant said that was partly due to my relative youth?

It's a relief to me my sofa will prob see me out, same as the now rather dodgy lean-to. I have enough woolly socks and duvet covers to last. A mattress I would buy if needed.

I go to death cafes, and have discovered death cleaning, invented in Denmark or somewhere. I had already started it in a minor way, clearing out cupboards, handing stuff down to children, shredding Those Letters.

GP says I am in good heath (78) so planning holidays. On holiday with family on favourite beach last week told them that was where to scatter the ashes, another job done - they laughed and started to ask about the music but I said Give me a break!
