I recently bought an album by the group 'Madness' and heard a song called " Shut Up "
It included one of the funniest lines that I have heard for a long time:

" I'm as honest as the day is long.
The longer the daylight , the less I do wrong".

So Gransnetters, the ball is now in your court. ??.

"And a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle" from the U2 song.

Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine, body's aching all the time
Goodbye, everybody, I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooh, (any way the wind blows)
I don't want to die
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all

Thanks Beau for the grin I needed it after reminiscing in the past on what had been and what 'might'.

I ain't lookin' to compete with you
Beat or cheat or mistreat you
Simplify you, classify you
Deny, defy or crucify you
All I really want to do
Is, baby, be friends with you

Just thinking its probably "flair" could be either!

Greyduster Fri 24-Aug-18 12:59:35

Jake Thackray’s song ‘Lah de Dah’ is very funny, about meeting his future in laws for the first time!

I have no flare for flaming desire (Cole Porter)

It has to be and without a doubt, although there were many wonderful songs around at the time ,the first lines of Michael Jackson's
One day in your life
You'll remember a place
Someone touching your face
That day was to change my life for ever.

Ooh yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around

Just realised OP is about amusing lyrics - my favourite in that category is 'How can you lie there and think of England when you don't even know who's in the team'. ?

"Shut uppa your face"

Ooo well what about ones that enrage you then? there is one that really really grates on me, called New York, can’t remember the singer at the minute but I have to turn the radio off, the lyrics are, something something something Brooklyn Bridge, something something empty fridge - for goodness sake! And then there’s one about a fella holding a girl’s hair back while she throws up! I despair.

You were one, you knew you were one
But you slipped right through my fingers
No, not literally but metaphorically
And now you're all I see
As the light fades.....

Gosh, I've expect I've got loads if I could only think of them. Don McLean's song about Vincent Van Gogh - 'This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.'
Matt Monro - 'Born free, to follow your heart' and on a lighter note -
Bernard Cribbins' song Right Said Fred - 'I've got a sort of feeling if we remove the ceiling, with a rope or two we can drop the blighter through' makes me chuckle.

But I ... I ... I ....will always love you.......

So many great songs and lyrics here. I too saw Dr. Hook many many years ago. Love Marianne's and Dr. Hook's versions. Another great lyric - 'Summer Breeze makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind'. Don't think anything conjures up picture of lazy summer days much better.

The very thought of you and I forget to do
The very ordinary things that everyone aught to do
I'm living in a kind of daydream; I'm happy as a King
And, foolish though it may seem, to me that's everything
The mere idea of you. The longing here for you.
I see your face in every flower, your eyes in stars above.
It's just the thought of you, the very thought of you, my love

Until the twelfth of never...........

We played at our wedding (second time around for both of us):

I never made promises lightly and there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left we'll walk in fields of gold

The Eva Cassidy version of Sting's "Fields of Gold".

Heavens not beyond the clouds
its just beyond the fear

Greyduster Fri 24-Aug-18 11:07:19

To you I would give the world
To you I'd never be cold
'Cause I feel that when I'm with you
It's all right I know it's right
And the songbirds keep singing
Like they know the score
And I love you I love you I love you
Like never before Like never before.

From 'Bitch' by Meredith Brooks

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your hell, I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
You know you wouldn't want it any other way
