I recently bought an album by the group 'Madness' and heard a song called " Shut Up "
It included one of the funniest lines that I have heard for a long time:

" I'm as honest as the day is long.
The longer the daylight , the less I do wrong".

So Gransnetters, the ball is now in your court. ??.

For obvious reasons
Dire Straits - 'it's just that the time was wrong...Juliet'

And 10CC. 'I'm not in love, so don't forget it'

Always you will be part of me
And I will forever feel your strength
When I need it most
You're gone now
gone but not forgotten
I can't say this to your face
But I know you hear
I'll see you again
You never really left
I feel you walk beside me
I know I'll see you again
When I'm lost
and I'm missing you like crazy
I tell myself I'm so blessed
To have had you in my life, my life.
I'll see you again
You never really left

Smile though your heart is breaking...

I sing this to myself when someone doesn’t return my smile. ?

Bathsheba Fri 24-Aug-18 08:13:35

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another

The full lyrics of He Ain't Heavy are pretty amazing, but these words have always stood out for me.

Bathsheba Fri 24-Aug-18 08:11:50

Allegretto you've picked one of my all time favourite songs - in fact one of my all time favourite artists too. So hard to choose just one of Billy Joel's songs.

Paddyann I went with my DD to see Paolo Nutini in concert about 10 years ago - he was superb, so good live. And I agree with you, it's difficult to choose just one of his songs too.

A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes. As if to hide a lonely tear. My life will be forever autumn, 'Cos your not here.

So poignant

callgirl, MissA, I watched Charlie Rich sing that on a programme called Kings Of Country on BBC4 just last week!

Two very contrasting ones

When you walk through a storm hold your head up high. ( Carousel)

I predict a riot ( Kaiser Chiefs)

...like freedom where wild horses run... (Elton John).

... and if it hurts, don't let them know. Don't give yourself away.... (Joni Michell)

Goodnight my angel, now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry, and if you sing this lullaby
Then in your heart there will always be a part of me
Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabies go on and on
They never die
That's how you and I will be

MissAdventure Thu 23-Aug-18 23:33:23

The first time, ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars
Were the gifts you gave
To the dark, and the endless skies
My Love

You can't kill the spirit,

she's like a mountain

Old and strong;

she lives on and on.

smile
It instantly takes me back too, although I was probably about ten or so.
They're great lyrics!

MissAdventure
There she stood, in the street.. smiling from her head to her feet.

Your post transported me back to the early 70s and one of my first live gigs in Glasgow. I was in lust with Paul Kossoff grin

We obviously share the same taste in music gilly! I can remember the exact place, who i was with, and what I was wearing the first time I heard Jim Croce's Time in a Bottle. One of the loveliest and most poignant songs ever; especially as he died shortly after releasing it.

paddyann Thu 23-Aug-18 23:06:16

Bathsheba I love Paolo but I cant choose just one of his songs .
Autumn makes me cry ,Iron Sky fills me with pride ,these streets makes me smile .

gillybob Thu 23-Aug-18 23:01:36

OMG chewy I can’t believe you chose my most favourite, saddest song ever. Whenever I am feeling down I have to listen to this Joni Mitchell song on repeat. The words are so true and lovely and yet so sad.

Can I add the song we played at my 2nd husbands funeral . A song I can’t listen to without tears (even after all this time) by Jim Croce

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
Is to save every day
TIl eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I’d save every day like a treasure and then
Again I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I’ve looked around enough to know
That you’re the one I want to go through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that never came true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you .........

If you want the fruit to fall,
You have to give the tree a shake,
But if you shake the tree too hard,
The bough is gonna break ...
(Mary's Prayer)

baubles Thu 23-Aug-18 22:53:32

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

Bathsheba Thu 23-Aug-18 22:52:44

Grant my last request
And just let me hold you
Don’t shrug your shoulders
Lay down beside me
Sure I can accept that we’re going nowhere
But one last time let’s go there
Lay down beside me.

(And yes, it bugs me too - the use of lay instead of lie, but I still love these lyrics)

MissAdventure Thu 23-Aug-18 22:32:18

I love that one, too callgirl.
Its very earthy, with his lovely raspy voice. smile
