Unbrushed/combed hair

Has anyone else noticed that many children nowadays have hair that looks as though it's never seen a brush or a comb? I've just walked home from town and counted half a dozen primary school aged children whose hair most definitely had not been brushed or combed today.

My grandsons and granddaughter have their hair brushed or combed every morning and my granddaughter also has hers brushed every night. However I know people who rarely brush or comb their children's hair - even on a schoolday. A while ago a group of little girls I was chatting to (all aged 6/7) were telling me they love ballet, but they don't like that they have to have their hair brushed 'that day'. confused

My younger DGD starts the school day with nice plaits or bunches but they never stay in until the end of the day!
It is long and silky and looks lovely for 5 minutes after brushing.

We weren't allowed to have hair which touched our collars when I was at senior school; if it did it would be tied up by one of the teachers (very roughly I might add).

I didnt bother putting my dgd through the ordeal of hairbrushimg today or teeth cleaning as she was going home after sleepover. Her mum said she would see to it so no probs

Around here, at least, (apart from poor DGS sticking up hair), most of the children have very tidy hair. The girls often have those immaculate braided into the hair plaits. (I don’t know what they are called). Yesterday, as I was at the hairdresser, a young mum came in with her immaculate little boy to have his already short, neat hair trimmed!

If I brush my DGD's hair, it looks beautiful, silky and gleaming - and within 5minutes, it looks as though it hasn't seen a brush in weeks..!
I have no idea what happens, but it looks like rats tails. If she was my DD, I would take her to have a nice short cut - but she doesn't want that, and her Mum (my DD) agrees - so it's none of my business ?

My hair always looked a mess because it’s frizzy! I can assure you my mother thoroughly brushed my hair every day! I have always envied those lucky girls with glossy poker straight hair or proper ringlet curls rather than my bushy frizzy mess?

MamaCaz Sat 25-Aug-18 22:18:45

My hair looks a mess the moment I step out of the house, no matter how well-brushed it was a moment before, and my DDG's hair (even though we each have a very different type of hair) is the same!

I wonder if it is because young children don’t like getting their hair brushed, and cry, and modern parents are more reluctant to upset their children than in earlier times.

Also, when I was young, my hair was plaited tightly before going to school. Nowadays, it might just be tied back in loose ponytail.

My lot had the heads brushed vigorously every morning , but one morning I was running late for the bus to work and DD1 ended up with her hair plaited on one side and in a bunch on the other , I didn't notice , nor did she ! but the teacher did and I was the butt of jokes for months

I’ve certainly noticed the same thing as Grannyactivist and wondered why hairbrushing isn’t a routine part of the child’s getting washed and dressed. Often the child who don’t look very kempt are accompanied by adults who are clean and tidy.

One little girl I know never seems to have had her hair brushed when I see her and her granny mentioned that it was because her mummy didn’t want to spoil all her lovely curls. But her hair isn’t really curly, it just looks a mess. Even when she was a bridesmaid recently her hair hadn’t been brushed. I have a photo but better not post it.

I bumped into my son and toddler granddaughter earlier. I was horrified, as she looked as if she had been dragged through a hedge backwards, He insisted he had just brushed it.
I took her, tied it into a ponytail and put clasps in, Ten minutes later, she once again looked as if she had been dragged through a hedge backwards. grin. Some children just have that kind of hair which looks dishevelled.

I haven't noticed it in younger children but certainly have in teenagers.
Youngest DGS (15) buys a mud type stuff which he rubs through his thick hair every morning after shampooing (at least its clean) and the finished effect reminds me of Worzil Gummage but all the boys & girls have similar styles.
My DGD has hair likened to glass very very glossy and she brushes her hair 2 x daily and ties neatly in a long pony-tail.

I be never seen it either in fact I thought it was the opposite and that they all girls and boys are very hair conscious

Can't say that I've noticed this Grannyactivist, certainly not matted hair - is this a particularly poor area?

My DGD(9) has lustrous long locks, chestnut with natural highlights ( a la Queens Rania and Letizia) and she hates anyone brushing it apart from mummy. When she stays with me I have to remind her to brush it before we go out and won't let me near it!

Young followers of Boris Johnson?

grannyactivist Sat 25-Aug-18 16:46:17

These are not teenagers, but infant and junior school ages - of an age where in my day it was still the parent's responsibility to ensure that hair and teeth were brushed.

I thought youngsters were really fussy about their hair looking right. I see some very stylish haircuts on boys with quiffs, my DH says they remind him of Tin Tin. Young girls have elaborate ways of tying their hair up on top . I am referring to the teenage groups i see walking pass my house to school, plus family members who have youngsters .

kitty was right, it was the morning and at a time when my own girls had usually just gone through the hair brushing ritual. I quite often see little girls with ponytails and pigtails that have become matted because the bands have obviously been left in for several days. It's one of those stupid things that now I've become aware of it I keep noticing it.

I wonder if it's a sign of busy parents or just that children don't like having their hair brushed and combed and 'get away with it' more than when we we younger.

Nits do not appear at the start of the term.. they are always around! Whilst brushing /combing may break the lices' legs and reduce their chances of laying 'nits' on the hair closest to the head it will not stop children getting headlice! Just as having a hanky in your pocket will prevent you catching a cold!

My youngest DD had real issues with me brushing her hair (we suffer from curls in our family!) so she had it cut short for most of primary school. Her DD2 hates her hair being touched too but likes it long.. she looks a bit raggedy Anne most days.. but she is a lovely child, kind and thoughtful. DGS2 also has long curly hair which is rarely brushed.. he showers each evening so it is not dirty just a bit tangled!

lemongrove Thu 23-Aug-18 15:50:33

I hadn’t noticed really ( must look now! ?)
Young teenage DGS simply won’t have his hair brushed and combed ( among many other things he won’t do) but does run his fingers through it after his shower.

BlueBelle Thu 23-Aug-18 15:36:11

I don’t think it’s any different today to any other era some kids always look immaculate and some always looked like they ve been pulled through a hedge backwards

Moocow Thu 23-Aug-18 15:34:01

Never mind the little ones! Sadly my thinning hair looks unkempt and depending on the weather it can look much better when i get out of bed compared to than when I'm out for the day.

kittylester Thu 23-Aug-18 13:08:48

I think GA said she was just walking home - so not the end of the school day and probably still the school holidays!

cornergran Thu 23-Aug-18 13:04:40

Good job you didn't see one of ours yesterday grannya. Her sister had given her hair a good brush, so did I before we went out. After an hour it looked as if she had never been near a hair brush. Just that sort of hair. smile. I do know what you mean, though, there are many who seem to have a very relaxed approach to hair, teeth and showers. Life eh?

Nandalot Thu 23-Aug-18 13:02:55

Poor DGS always has ‘bed hair’! It doesn’t matter how much we comb it. Looking forward to the time he wants to use gel, because then the sticking up will be useful.

muffinthemoo Thu 23-Aug-18 12:18:18

I was not the best groomed teenager and whilst I was assiduous about teeth brushing in my semi awake state each morning, washed face and brushed hair was sometimes forgotten in my trail to the school bus.

Friends generally reminded me before classes started but we were a thoroughly unkempt bunch to the dismay of all our teachers.
