Introducing myself

(45 Posts)
Iamnotarobot Fri 17-Aug-18 11:10:08

I have been asked by HQ to introduce myself as apparently this is the normal way of going about being a new member.

I have tried to find other examples of personal introduction but have been unlucky so far.

I am a gran, with a couple of grandchildren

My interests are widespread from walking to the theatre to studying to politics

I hope that is what is required

Since iamnot is not the only one in recent weeks to post long chunks cut n pasted from various sources, I am puzzled as to why she has been singled out for this treatment.
I don't like them and tend to skip over them but as iamnot is new, perhaps she hadn't yet cottoned on?
Another poster, who has been around rather longer seems to have escaped the slapped wrist and suspension. Perhaps her posts were part of the reasoning behind jura's op.
Without arguing over the rights and wrongs I do think some explanation is needed in the interests of fairness. There seems to be a fine line between what's acceptable and what's not.

If you stay Iamnot I think you will be well supported by your new friends, I think HQ owes you an apology and us all an explanation about these new rules and the reason for the harsh unwelcoming post to you
Do hang around

Poor Iamnotarobot, I feel so sorry for her. She was obviously very upset.

FarNorth Fri 17-Aug-18 22:43:27

I just got here - and am also horrified by that message from GNHQ.

cornergran Fri 17-Aug-18 22:29:15

I’ve just caught up with this and am horrified. If you are still there iamnot why not give us another try. Most of us are friendly and welcoming. I’m sorry you have had such an uncomfortable beginning.

Sorry, posted on the wrong thread [blush[

I didnt actually read the GNHQ comment about introduction as an order to create a "hello, this is me" thread...more a suggestion that the OP might like to say "hello, I'm new" or some such personal intro, when posting.
That said, I didnt see any of the original posts.

Glitterknitbaby Fri 17-Aug-18 19:59:11

I’ve never introduced myself and I haven’t the foggiest idea what cut and paste is?

Jalima1108 Fri 17-Aug-18 19:00:36

Iamnotarobot Did you have to tick all the photographs showing a vehicle/shopfront?
MawBroon Is it only me who always seems to miss one grin

BlueBelle Fri 17-Aug-18 18:56:02

I m sorry you feel the need to leave without getting started it seems from this thread that everyone is supporting you

This all seems quite surreal even your name seems a strange choice I feel I m in a parallel universe here

But having said that I hope you stay

Jalima1108 Fri 17-Aug-18 18:53:14

GNHQ only usually delete posts if they are a personal attack or offensive in some way (and not even then quite often)

So what is going on?

Jalima1108 Fri 17-Aug-18 18:50:53

I seem also to have broken the rules by cutting and pasting
hmm I never knew cutting and pasting was against the rules until today!!
(see what I did there with a quote from your post wink)

Iamnot - a baptism of fire for you unfortunately.
But welcome and don't let it put you off

Cherrytree59 Fri 17-Aug-18 18:48:57

Hi and welcome.
Sorry you feel so unwelcome,
Sometimes it takes a little time to find ones way around Grandsnet.

On this thread it would seem that most people have been quite welcoming Iamnotarobot
Please lurk and give GN another chance.

Chewbacca Fri 17-Aug-18 18:36:44

What the hell is going on here today? confused

MissAdventure Fri 17-Aug-18 18:30:29

Ah, please reconsider.
It would be nice to get to know you a bit better.

I have decided to resign from my membership of gransnet.

I’ve only been on for a couple of days, but I feel so unwelcome by the people who run gransnet as they deleted my contributions without any warning or advice. I can’t think why this happened and my only thoughts are that they didn’t agree with what I was posting.

Thank you for all those who have supported me like Jura, and mawbroon and many others.

Iamnotarobot Fri 17-Aug-18 18:01:53

But you asked me to introduce myself as part of my continued stay.

I don’t need to discuss anything thank you as I’m quite happy now as to what are the rules.

No cutting and pasting as it obviously something that seems to irritate other posters, and be more personal.

Hope that will be ok.

MawBroon Fri 17-Aug-18 17:56:00

The message from GN was
You can not copy and paste large chunks of text from one website to another. We will delete any of your posts that do.Weve suspended your account until we hear from you that you understand.
As a new poster it is worth introducing yourself in a more personal way
So that’s what I’ve done

I am horrified at this high handed and frankly discriminatory pronouncement from GNHQ!
You don’t suspend a new member’s account because the goalposts havebjust been moved!
I think Jura2 has a lot to answer for in her disingenuous enquiry/complaint to GNHQ regarding cutting and pasting as it has opened a whole can of very unpleasant worms. There are posters who under whatever circumstances like to cut and paste whole extracts from elsewhere- many of us have done so. You can’t always post a link, sometimes they don’t work, some may be extracts from long documents, and sometimes paywalls make it impossible.
So the “rules” have changed have they?
On whose say-so?
Nobody else has been ordered to “introduce themselves” in fact since profiles are no longer offered we may know next to nothing about members going back years.
Frankly I am gobsmacked and in your shoes Iamnotarobot I might have been tempted to suggest an alternative two word course of action.
I do wonder if the choice of username, which is presumably tongue in cheek has just been taken too literally and if you had called yourself Fluffykittenlover you might have been spared the least welcoming welcome ever. Some people really need to get a life and that includes dictating how posts should be composed. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. Picky or what?
This is not the Gransnet I signed up to however many years ago.
Oh Jingl where are you when we need you?

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 17-Aug-18 17:47:22

Hello! We're happy to discuss this with you again iamnotarobot. Do email us on contactus and we can explain further if you need? With regards copy pasting we always suggest a bit of context is given so it can be part of the conversation. And of course it always needs clear crediting to the source. New joiners aren't required to introduce themselves, though you're very welcome to!

Iamnotarobot Fri 17-Aug-18 17:30:19

I pasted from The Guardian, The Canary, can’t remember what else, oh! Parliamentary reports from committees.

BlueBelle Fri 17-Aug-18 17:27:01

I suppose it depends what you copied and pasted and from what source? If it’s a genuine source and you give the credit to that source unless it’s inflamatory or something it seems a bit mystifying

joannapiano Fri 17-Aug-18 17:24:45

I don’t know how to cut and paste! Welcome to anybody who’s fairly new. I have been here virtually since the beginnings of GN. I find most people are very helpful and supportive.

merlotgran Fri 17-Aug-18 17:05:22

Crumbs! Suspension's a bit harsh.
