I think women should stop curtseying. Men don't curtsey. What's wrong with a handshake?

Jalima1108 Mon 13-Aug-18 12:54:02

muffin grin
(although it's not funny)
Have you seen the other thread about Ed Balls in Trumpland?

muffinthemoo Mon 13-Aug-18 12:51:45

Probably a similar level of outcry if Prince Charles announced he would visit America to “grab women by the pussy” or call all Latino Americans “rapists” and “gang members”. Or perhaps endorse the Klan.

gillybob Mon 13-Aug-18 12:46:54

Imagine the outcry if her maj or one of the firm went to America to be greeted by a giant nappy wearing blimp ?

At the time of her accession many Scots set about deleting the II from our coronation mugs, post boxes, etc. arguing that she was the first, not second Queen of Scots.
Yes, that's true, just as your James VI was our James I of England.

Jalima1108 Mon 13-Aug-18 12:30:12

I wonder why several other countries seem to want HM as Head of State?

Anniebach Mon 13-Aug-18 12:23:20

why does queenie attends the opening of the Welsh Assembly not our alleged head of state the prince of Wales?

Simple answer, he isn’t head of state of Wales queenie is.

Jalima1108 Mon 13-Aug-18 12:16:26

You seem to be rather confused Granny23

Wales is a country and is part of Great Britain of which HM is Head of State.

Because we have an elected Parliament, making and passing legislation lies with them rather than with the Head of State.

Jalima1108 Mon 13-Aug-18 12:09:19

I think her post was in generalreferring to the Queen, Granny23

and, to be fair, those of us who may prefer a monarchy are not necessarily royal ass kissers (nice) or indeed servile and it is a moot point whether or not those who wish for a presidential system have more sense.

We may, from observations of various types of presidencies around the world, come to the conclusion that our system is best.

Anniebach Mon 13-Aug-18 12:07:53

Granny23, Wales is not a principality it is a country .

I don’t consider anyone to be elite stormer,

Granny23 Mon 13-Aug-18 11:42:06

To be fair, I don't think PA was referring to the Queen but rather to all the royals as a group.

janeainsworth Mon 13-Aug-18 11:26:11

I do have a great deal of respect for the person who has done a pretty good job for us for 66 years

So do I, G23.
That's why I thought PA's description of her as a 'lazy scrounging entitled eegit' was both inappropriate and abusive.

It might be appropriate to use it as a descriptor of POTUS, but it would still be abusive.

Granny23 Mon 13-Aug-18 11:21:29

It is not my job to condemn or support Paddyann in her choice of language.

However, if PA had written in such derogatory terms about the current POTUS many would have agreed with her, without reference to the need to 'respect the office not the man'. PA does not recognise the sovereignty of the Queen over her so feels free to say what she likes about the RF.

I, on the other hand have no respect for the office and believe that the sooner the whole aristocracy, order of precedence, bowing and curtseying is consigned to the past, the better. (We are a' Jock Tamson's bairns) BUT I do have a great deal of respect for the person who has done a pretty good job for us for 66 years.

janeainsworth Mon 13-Aug-18 10:26:05

Thank you for that insight granny23, but it doesn’t excuse paddyann’s abusive language, does it?

Granny23 Mon 13-Aug-18 10:16:45

Actually Anniebach the Queen is Queen Elizabeth II of England and Elizabeth, Queen of Scots. As NI is a province she is their Queen too, whereas in Wales, being a Principality, the head of state is the Prince of Wales.

I am old enough to remember the hooha there was at the time of the Coronation, when Elizabeth was crowned with the English Crown and honours and some time later was presented with the Scottish crown and honours (while wearing an ordinary frock) but never actually wore them. At the time of her accession many Scots set about deleting the II from our coronation mugs, post boxes, etc. arguing that she was the first, not second Queen of Scots.

In the seventies a minor royal came to our inner-city school. The children in my middle infants class had been briefed beforehand, and when he came in we all stood up and the girls curtseyed and the boys bowed. He then began a long and boring speech about the importance of education. A little girl with Downs suddenly piped up “What’s he going on about?” The adults stifled their laughter, but the children didn’t. Exit one rather miffed royal.

MawBroon Mon 13-Aug-18 09:35:04

“Cow towing” sounds like pulling a bovine along ?!
I think you mean “kowtowing” gringrin

Stormer Mon 13-Aug-18 09:32:50

I agree with you gillybob, cow towing to the 'elite' makes me quite ill.

Anniebach Mon 13-Aug-18 08:34:58

Paddyann, you are a British citizen who lives in Scotland, one of four countries of the U.K. queenie is queen of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland .

Scotland voted to remain in the U.K.

I like these old traditions but agree that it can look very ungainly. TM never gets it right and Sarah Ferguson goes right over the top. It would look better in a long skirt of course but we only wear those at very formal evening occasions so we're stuck with images of unsteady grasshoppers!

OldMeg Mon 13-Aug-18 07:17:51

Missed this televised curtesy. Poor old TM. She’s not the most flexible or elegant person and I can only imagine how awkward it looked.

Grandma70s Mon 13-Aug-18 06:56:56

absent’s post reminded me that my school spent ages practising a mass curtsey in honour of some Duchess or other, not even a princess!

absent Mon 13-Aug-18 06:22:23

Does anyone remember President Trump curtseying – not bowing, but curtseying – to King Salaman bin Abdulaziz al Saud – on his Middle East visit early in his presidency? This grotesque performance was followed by an unbelievably inept and equally embarrassing sword dance.

absent Mon 13-Aug-18 06:13:30

When Princess Margaret was planning to visit my school we wasted huge amounts of time that might have been devoted to education practising curtseying in unison – what Upper and Lower Transition always referred to as Doing the Princess Margaret. We were also expected to applaud as she walked down the corridors.

Baggs Mon 13-Aug-18 06:07:41

I think we have misunderstood each other, raficha. To my mind saying one doesn't like curtseys because they are ungainly is chat, not fuss. Other people joining the conversation is also chat, not fuss.

Perhaps where we each draw the line, so to speak, between what counts as chat and what counts as fuss is where we differ. Curtsey fuss to me would be someone making a fuss, which would involve physical actions, about doing a curtsey when in front of the queen, rather than just bowing to her or nodding the head.

If you think talking about something is fuss, we are on a different plane of understanding is all ✌️

Colvillefly Mon 13-Aug-18 03:46:49

Wouldn’t curtsy to anyone. We’re all equal, doesn’t matter who they are.
