Old photos

I have recently been searching online and in various archives for photographs of some particular buildings, many of which no longer exist, so the thought of throwing away old photo's makes me want to say NO - please keep unwanted photo's and hand them over to a local history site.
I recently found an online 'studio photograph' of my grandmother with her adult children. I can't tell you how thrilled I was.

Zoo animals. We have so many black and white pictures of zoo animals. And landscapes of nowhere in particular. Why did we take them! I too am in the laborious process of sorting 100’s of photos inherited from parents. Scanning a lot of family pics to put into a photo book.

I’ve just been sorting through some old photos and have got quite ruthless about throwing out ones that are badly exposed or out of focus. I also get rid of the touristy views of scenery and buildings as better ones can be found online.

Ones of people I don’t know also get binned, unless they might be relatives. Then the remainder can be sorted and hopefully labeled with names and dates. Have to be in the right humour to do the sorting though.

Just to add, we have so many old photos, inc. many of our years abroad, and I'm sure I could get rid of so many of them. For a recent 'big' birthday of dh, a dd wanted to make one of those albums you can order online, with photos from his year dot to the present.
I had to wait until I knew he'd be out for several hours, and then go through umpteen albums, finding photos from when he was a small boy, to the present with Gdcs.

It took ages finding and picking the best, and I had to mark them all - and the albums - to know which would go back where, but the end result made such a lovely surprise present - he was so pleased with it, and everyone who came to his big birthday do wrote something in the album.

A couple of years before he died, my father put a selection of the many old B&W photos from his childhood, into an album - and wrote captions to say exactly who and where. We wouldn't have had a clue about most of them otherwise.

He had a wonderful memory and was even able to name a handsome shire horse on a farm where he'd stayed as a child in the 1920s.
Some of his captions were amusing, too - e.g. 'Great Aunts X and Y, dressed in the fashion of staid ladies of their day.'

My sister has the album now - she's promised to scan them in so all the family can have them, but hasn't got around to it so far!

I don't think I want to be arond in 50yrs time ?

In my mum's photos we found a sepia studio photo of a very haughty woman. It was labelled 'unknown family member'.

nina maybe someone on the FB site would like them? Alternatively you keep them and bring them out in 50 yrs time?

I have shelves and shelves of albums from the last 70 years or so (and my mother's from before that, with all photos labelled and dated. But it's getting increasingly difficult to keep up to date as we take so many digital photos these years and I can't keep them all! I try now to make a 'photobook' of family photos each year, plus an album of the best of our holiday snaps. I think the C &GC will be interested in family pics but probably not our holiday pics! However I cant bear to have loose photos lying around in drawers or even languishing on the computer!!

I have been going through all our old photo albums and throwing out all the photos of scenery from our holidays. I kept the photos of us and family and friends. I’ve annotated them and filed in envelopes by year. Next job is to mount them all in a nice album. I’ve found lots of old photos of the children and other family members which I scanned as I went and emailed to them. The GC have enjoyed looking at them.

ContraryMary I belong to our FB local history page and I take your point. However, whilst it fascinates me I'm not sure DD would keep them for the next 50 yrs.
Thing is they are mostly taken on holiday and some of them I'm not even sure where

If I may briefly hijack this thread just for a minute, Menopaws somebody was worried at your recent absence and hoped you hadn’t had an accident training or anything.
How are the plans progressing?

Try, if possible, to put the names of people on the back or they can become meaningless.

I agree with ContraryMary's second paragraph.

Keep the must keeps in one pile and label the backs of all the others and keep in a box somewhere.
FB has groups of towns and villages are always looking for old photos of buildings that have long gone. In 50 yrs time they will be interesting to some locals.
