We have green patches!!

Too much rain, not enough rain, too much wind at the wrong time, where are the bees etc.

That is the most worrying - where are the bees?

Who would be a farmer?
Ours would not be anything else, despite the moans worries.

Who would be a farmer?
Our local farmer has already sent cows to market due to lack of grass.
He has used up quite bit of his winter feed. I asked him what would happen if we didnt get rain he just shook his head and said pray for rain.
Well it did rain at the weekend but....
He also had a music festival in one of his field last weekend☔

Monica-- when the "silk" on the top of the cobs turns brownish, then gently peel back a bit of the green wrapping on the cob at the top to look at the first grains you can see. if they are pale yellow and squirt out a milky juice if you stick your thumbnail in one, then it's ready to pick. Hope this helps. Mine look as if they'll be ready in about a week.

Rainwater is obviously so much better than tap water for grass and our plants.
Farmers in our family always say that rain is better for crops than irrigating - the rain brings down the nutrients from the atmosphere apparently.

I posted a link on the stockpiling thread re sweetcorn - but never mind, we GN's could come round and pick it - promise to save him some!
Normally August I think, for harvesting sweetcorn but it has been so hot it may be ready.

Our cat is also much happier now as he won't touch tap water, usually drinks the rainwater in bird bath or from puddles, it was a bit of nightmare during heatwave.

Monica we will also be away soon and I am fretting about my DGS's corn on the cob!
No idea how to know when it's ready for picking.

I have noticed all the tubs of flowers we have on the terrace have REALLY perked up. They survived the drought/heat because we watered them sparingly every day (rain butts/watering cans) but they did struggle and looked limp and less than happy. Now, after several downpours the leaves look perky and the flowers 'happy' if that makes sense!

The straw-coloured lawn is now more of a pale mustard shade...with tinges of lemon-grass. (I must produce a colour chart of heat damaged lawns...)

We have green also. Unfortunately wind came with rain and my hanging baskets have taken a real pounding. I think we will have to go for a 'Chelsea chop' and hope for the best.

The front lawn is entirely green and the back lawn starting to green. The courgettes have taken off (just as we are going on holiday!). I will probably come home to several marrows, despite picking every sign of a courgette off before I go.

It was 36 degrees here on Friday, the lawn looked like Shredded Wheat! However we have had some serious downpours since then and lo and behold the lawn is bouncing back!
