Pink hair??

As most have said just give it a try. It's not irrevocable like a tattoo if you don't like it.

I just Google "balayage" and am delighted to realise that I have acquired exactly this look, without spending any money. I'm growing out long-term highlights in order to see my natural (grey) colour - for the first time in years. My hair is about shoulder length. (I fear that to grow it as long as the OP's hair could take me a while, depending on whether or not I'm wearing a bra when measuring...)

Yes, you certainly have to bleach dark hair before turning it pink. However, my hairdresser has told me that you have to be prepared for regular 'maintenance' as the colour begins to fade unevenly.

What about flecks of colour throughout instead of a block colour at the bottom?

I'm 66 soon with only a few fine strips of greying roots which actually make my natural dark blond/light brown hair look highlighted and people I don't know think I'm in my 50s! My mum died at 68 without a trace of grey with the same light brown/blond hair so it's hereditary but my dad had black hair and was grey before 40.

I don't think I could ever accept being completely grey as I think it's aging but I've no need to do anything colour wise yet, luckily.

Luckygirl Like other posters I say 'go for it'!!! I like streaks of colour rather than an all over hue. But certainly give your ideas a whirl - it's fun

I've always wanted to have red hair so I began to turn into a redhead as soon as I started to go grey. No pretence that it's real, but quite a few people have told me that they like it. My mother had dark auburn hair, my sister is a natural blonde and I have the fair skin.
I do like to look vaguely natural, but I can see the appeal of bright pink hair - though you might need a whole new wardrobe.
It would be a faff if you have dark hair as hair needs to be lightened so that the colour will show. I did it to my daughter's dark hair for a while when she had a broken leg and it was a long business. The colours also fade pretty quickly, though you can top it up with coloured conditioner. Depending on your hair it might also ruin it's condition. There was a product which did the lightening and colouring in one go, but meant for highlights rather than the whole head. Not sure if it is still available, it came from Superdrug.

I had the turquoise colour put into the bottom of my hair, and it never actually went, just got cut off bit by bit as my hair grew.
It went from pretty turquoise, to khaki, to fag ash grey with green tinges.
I went back to pink after that.

My hair is slowly going pale grey and I was thinking of having "dipped" ends, possibly blue.

My Hairdresser said I would need to have it bleached first as there is some darkish hair around the back. Then you apply the pink or blue or whatever.

I would get a Hairdresser's advice.

You can apply streaks of colour with special hair colours. They don't always work very well. I saw a youtube where they ran coloured eye make-up through strands of hair. It looked great! It washes out so no problem there.

Nothing really but IMO having a totally different colour 'halfway' down your hair puts you in tbe hippy class. At 20 you would be smiled at, at knocking 60 it would be a laugh.
If, like Helen Mirren and others with blonde/silvery hair, having a wash in/ out colour can be wonderful.
Balyage or the bottom 6 inches a totally different colour, such as pink on brown would be at odds with a face no longer in the flush of youth.

i'm 76, have very fine hair but it has been all colours, the last time I went to the local college and they did a lovely job, can't really see all the colours they used in the pic but I was pleased with it.

I was in the hairdressers a few months back and another client had hers died a lovely light purple. It looked stunning. Go for it.

Point taken gilly - this is why I plan to have streaks of pink in the under layers in the last 6" - if it does not work out I can just cut that bit off!

PECS - my fashion "style" - if you can call it that! - is jeans/linen trousers, tunics etc. I do not even know what the Edinburgh Wool Shop is!!! A bit of pink would definitely go with the "style" - never wear skirts, heels, tights, or indeed anything at all that might vaguely be designated smart/posh!

It was actually a kind of turquoise /bluey/green Rowantree not sure of the brand though as she had it done in a salon. I just know she couldn’t get rid of it . I’m wondering now....... unknown to her at the time she would have been pregnant when she had it done. I wonder if that made it “take” more ?

When I was younger (back in the late 50's) I used to have vivid pink highlights in the front of my dark brown hair. Did them myself at home, but did need firstly to bleach those hairs before applying the pink colouring.
I stopped these highlights as time went on, too much faffing around as my hair did and still does grow extremely quickly, but always kept it coloured. As I got older I used a lighter colouring, and was turned 70 when I finally decided to stop using that and see how grey I actually was. About 70% was the answer, and I love it, just wish the rest would go the same colour - I so envy people with beautiful full heads of grey hair, cannot get that out of any bottle.
Personally, I believe that whatever we do, if we feel good about it then is quite correct, had my long hair cut short after the birth of my third child some 45 years ago.

gillybob I'd love to know what brand she used! All the green dyes I've tried wash out too quickly...

Not to put a dampener on your enthusiasm Lucky but my DD had a moment of madness at Christmas and had her beautiful, natural blonde, curly hair dyed a kind of turquoise/blue. Months later we tried just about everything possible to strip it out and nothing worked. She ended up having the whole lot cut out . Apparently these “false colours” are almost impossible to remove.
