Schools banning skirts.

I was at a none uniform wearing junior school in the late 60s early 70s and during one of the winters of regular power cuts ,due to strikes ,the headmaster allowed the girls to wear trousers- when a power cut was due. As a student nurse in the early 80s our female tutors weren't allowed to wear trousers as the (male ) boss didn't like them. Today 90 plus percent of staff in the NHS wear trousers. I can well remember the contortions I had to perform to carry out my jobs and maintain my dignity/modesty now adays that is the least of my worries

Totally agree in principle Jalima1108, but whatever school rules are in place pupils of both sexes, along with transgender, binary and fluid gender identifying pupils will find a way to incorporate the latest 'trend' into their uniform.

The only time I found this did not happen was when two of our children were at fee paying schools. They were strict and it was just adhered to. Perhaps our state schools should take a look at how private schools manage uniform and discipline issues around uniform.

Well there are a number of people who use the term 'Guys' to address both male and female .

Women and girls surely have the right to wear whatever is in fashion.

Wow! paperbackbutterfly...so are you saying nobody could wear a skirt in your school? I think this is where the problem lies. Choice should be choice i.m.o. One boy decides to wear a skirt and so all the girls are banned? Sounds like discrimination in reverse to me but then when does it ever work the other way?

I used to work in a school that had trousers or skirt option. A transgender boy chose the skirt option so skirts were removed from the options the next year

Times have changed, not all girls with short skirts are victims they are just followers of fashion. The girls at our local high school all wear black tights with skirts, not revealing in my opinion. ( just for info I have sons no daughter)

My point Baggs is that this is nothing new! From the 60's onwards girls have been wearing short short skirts.

Upskirting is not ‘gazing’ as you well know Baggs - victim blaming again I see.

"Embarassing" is a good way of putting it.

A victim type, as I used the expression, is someone who wears a skirt up which, at times, it is easy to gaze even without particularly wanting to (as described in my blood boiling post above) who then makes a fuss about it. If you wear a skirt that barely covers your bum for formal things like school you are not, in my opinion, respectably covered.

On a beach, on holiday, it'd be fine. People seem to have lost the notion of being appropriately dressed.

Baggs: I don't think its much different to when I was at school t.b.h or even when I started work in the 70's. I worked in a Building Society which had a very young workforce and we all had such short skirts that we had to wear matching knickers because we knew they would possibly be on show! My dear old dad complained to me that it was 'embarrassing'

So I don't think much has really changed from the 60s/70s. Yes our school insisted we had knee length skirts but as soon as we were out they were rolled up the midrife until they were pelmet size (with a huge midrife bulge lol)

I don't blame schools for wanting to ban skirts like that. I'm rather amazed they haven't done it long since.

I don't think comfort comes into it. Fashion is far more important when you're in your mid teens.

"respectably covered" is what a lot of school girls aren't nowadays, with skirts barely covering their bums. I reckon some of the so-called upskirting that takes place in schools is inadvertent because you can hardly avoid it if you're walking upstairs behind girls so clad ?

The prevailing attitude of girls who arent, victim types is "Deal with it!"

I think that all boys and girls should be free to wear school uniform skirt, trousers or culottes as they prefer, as long as they are neat and respectably covered, and comfortable in their choice.

As for making sure your knickers weren't showing, I wore mini skirts as a primary school teacher, it never occurred to me at the time that the children sitting on the carpet probably saw more than they should have! When you are young you just don't worry about such things.

Skirts worn a decent length and a line or pleated do look nice but unfortunately many of the skirts worn are very short and tight fitting not appropriate for school.I would have been over the moon to have had the choice of trousers when I was at school .

Oh I think Hm that’s a rather rosy view of sexual harassment in the 60s. If only it had just been a wolf whistle
