Fathers day

So many lovely memories but also sad stories about dads. I had a very talented and special dad with whom I remember lots of singing and dancing, standing on his feet. Sadly I chose the wrong dad for my DS's as he did not care. The plus point is that they have become really good dads to my DGC as a result of their own experience so bad role models don't always have bad results.

Father's Day .... I was dreading it as I had a great father but it was okay. It's getting easier after nine years. Hope it works out for you too.

My lovely dad died of lung cancer in 1961 when I was twelve. I can't listen to "Dance With My Father" without feeling sad. He used to dance me round in his arms when I was small to "Waltzing Matilda". He was a chain smoker in the days before it was understood how much damage cigarettes were doing. It came too late for him, but I have been a non-smoker all my life.

There was no Father's Day in my day, did it come over from America? My father died suddenly when I was 16, a very, very long time ago and it changed the course of my life. I still miss him, there are so many things I want to tell him. About 15 years ago one of the colleagues he'd worked with told me that he was always talking about me, so proud of me.

I lost m dad 45 years ago when I was 13 years old he was very ill with Lung cancer
But I remember him so well he would also twirl me around and have a little dance when the music played on the radio.
Our last dance was Fir the good times by Perry Como and to this day I cry when I hear it

Jools 1903, of course you are not wrong!.. I have a good friend whose father bullied her throughout her childhood, and after he died, it turned out that he had actually sexually abused another child. My friend is just glad that he is dead, which seems like the only sensible attitude to me.

You obviously did your best for your father, in spite of his treatment of you, and I hope that you realise that you are the good person here, never him!

Lovely stories of Dads. I only knew my husband's father for a short time and was with him when he died.. He was a great bloke, had been a captain in the merchant navy and really should of written a book about his experiences. My own father had left my DM when I was 6 so no memories really. My step father and I had a love hate relationship but he was good to my DM and cared for her before she died. So to all dads, step dads, father in-laws happy fathers day.

My lovely father died 26 years ago and only a month after my youngest daughter was born (very early) I didn’t go to his funeral as I was not well after the birth and that is still something that haunts me nearly 30 years later.
My father was an extraordinary man who was a role model to me his only child.
He had won an English Speaking Union scholarship as a young man and had gone around the world by the time he was 20,
he studied chemical engineering at Imperial College and although brilliant at maths and science was always gently patient with me an arty linguist when I struggled with science homework!
He lived and worked for 10 years in Marseille for his company before he met my mother and stood for Parliament in the late 1950’s before he was married.
When I was 10 days old my father suffered a serious head injury in a car accident that the doctors told my mother would leave him totally incapacitated. However, my lovely determined father fought back, and struggled through therapy to get most of his old self back. He was left with a speech impediment, and some loss of function on his left side, but he was able to go back to work and worked at the university teaching post graduate chemistry students until cancer forced him to take early retirement at 62.
I was extremely proud of him for fighting against the odds and for teaching me that girls could do anything they wanted.
He was so proud when I got my first law degree and later so happy to have his 3 lovely granddaughters. I was sad that he never got to see them grow to the accomplished lovely women they are now.
He had a difficult childhood, packed off to boarding school aged only 7! He didn’t let me board until I was 13 (and wanted to) but I was a day girl until then.
It was my father who taught me about politics and the constitution, and how to think critically, and it was he who nursed me through my science O levels which were essential for university!
I have now lost both my parents, and think about them and miss them every day. As an only child of two only children there is now no one to remember my childhood?
My children have also been blessed with a fantastic father, he has suffered health problems but also never gave up and is now a fantastic grandfather

I don't remember there being a Father's day when we were young, although I think there was a Mother's day.Have I just misremebered???

I’ve just heard the song ‘Dance with my Father’. Had a few tears as it reminded me of occasions when I danced the quick step with Dad. A dance he taught me and one he loved.

I was only 5 when my dad died but I still think of him and I often wonder what he would think of the world today . My mum did remarry after a lot of years on her own so my children had a gd who loved them very much ?To all the great dads out there including my son x

Bluebelle I know how you feel I feel much the same myself, when my Dad was dying 21 years ago my Mum couldn't bear the thought of as she put it "watch him take his last breath" so I sat with her as I felt I couldn't leave her on her own, so my much loved Dad was alone and I have felt guilty ever since for not being with him, at the end of his life as he was always there for me when I needed him. Thinking about him today as I do every day.

I never got to celebrate Fathers’ Day with my dear Dad either as he died in 1966 when I was 22. It was hard to come to terms with losing him and I always felt so hard done by, especially when my two sons were born as he loved children. However reading through these posts I realise how lucky I was as I have only happy memories of him, sitting on his knee, him stroking my hair listening to the radio together. He used to love gardening and we used to walk round the garden together, him telling me the names of the plants and what vegetables he planned to grow. The vegetables he grew tasted wonderful and he gave away many of them to friends, neighbours and family as he was such a kind and generous man. He died at home at the age of 54, cared for wonderfully by my Mother; we knew he was dying so I was able to hold him and tell him I loved him which he knew anyway. I realise now I am lucky to have these memories which some people never had. Blessings to all Fathers on this special day.

Dad died several years ago, and on the odd occasion I still think 'Must tell dad that'.
We bless all the good dads today, not just our own.

Mine passed away many years ago through drink related illnesses.
My only regret is that he didn't go years sooner.

Silverlining, my dad was the same, a bully, we lived walking on eggshells, and he painted a picture, so people saw him (when we had company or my friends were round) as a nice man, but it was all for show, he is still alive, and hasn't changed, I have children, and he has never bothered with them, we don;t talk, and I feel better for it, My father in law, was wonderful, he I miss xx Have a lovely day, keep smiling, xxxx

Muppett1 I feel the same. Sadly my Dad died 28 years ago and my Mam died two years ago, Mam was a long time on her own and I don’t think I realised how lonely she must of been, she never met anyone else. She was buried above my Dad and still get very upset accepting that they have both gone, something I don’t think I’ll ever get over. Our daughter lives away with her job now and isn’t here today she came last week and left gifts but it’s very strange, I reckon it’s strange for her too though x

My father was not only a wonderful loving father to me, but a wonderful father figure to my two sons after my husband died when they were young children. I was lucky that we only lived fifteen miles apart so they saw him most weeks. They couldn’t have had a better role model.

My father-in-law lived in Australia so we didn’t see him often, but he too was a lovely man. When my husband (his son) died he (FiL) said he didn’t think he (FiL) been a very good father, but my husband thought he was. Moral: if you think your parents are good parents, tell them so. Say something.

my thoughts are with my wonderful dad who died in 1998 .he gave me a magical childhood a home filled with laughter and love
today my son is a father too hope he will be the loving great dad to his little daughter that my dad was

Two, no, three special men to remember today. My own dear dad, the kindest of men, who died 42 years ago. My dear father-in-law, another lovely man. And last but not least my darling husband who died in February, a brilliant dad to our children. I shall be raising a glass to all three of them today.

Like silverlining48 my father was not a nice one. He was a drunken, violent, selfish man who filled the house with fear. I would have done anything to have a dad like some of my friends' dads. My own DH has been (and still is) a lovely father to our DD. I know she will appear today with something lovely for him. Happy Father's Day to all lovely dads.

I have been blessed with a truly wonderful father-in-law whose presence in my life more than makes up for my own abusive father who died many years ago.
The Wonderful Man I married couldn't have been a better father and role model to our own children and in testament to that fact my sons want to be just like him as dads.

Happy Father’s Day to all the good dads out there. We’re having a get-together later to celebrate the great fathers in our family, young and old. My own lovely dad died when I was 35, but we’ll raise a glass to him today.

Many of us feel a twinge on this day, something is missing. So I always send my 2 sons a card on Fathers Day saying how proud I am of the Fathers that they have become. Today is difficult for me too. My brother who has survived throat cancer and given the all clear last week, has now had a heart attack and it’s touch and go for him. Am just going to pick elderly Mum up to go and visit him in hospital, just in case....
