Thoroughly enjoyed watching the opening match last night with my 8 year old footy mad grandson .
And what a match it was too, 5-0 to the hosts Russia . The Saudis might not have been on the pitch at all .

Teresa May has stepped in to say that the Royal Mail workers and others should be allowed to fly the English flag during the tournament, after the misery guts at RM banned it’s workers from doing so. Quite right too .

Ah yes Belgium a “whole different ball ⚽️ game” . Looking forward to it though . Will def have to take one of DHs blood pressure pills for that one !

Brilliant result, well played England. I'm a huge Crystal Palace supporter and remember watching Gareth playing for the Eagles. Great England manager and great young, dedicated team. Looking forward to the Belgium game.

Great result but let us not get too excited they were the world's best team as opposition were they.

Let us see if we can do that against Spain or Portugal.grin

You’re spot on about Southgate Iam he knew exactly what he was doing when he picked his squad . Thank goodness they are staying cool headed .

Yay!!! I’m worn out and hoarse?

gillybob Sun 24-Jun-18 14:54:32

What a game !

Great play by England, Gareth Southgate has got a team, rather than a collection of players. Grandma70’s I come from a family who love footie and married a footie enthusiast. Don’t worry about your grandson, there are many more positives than negatives in
Playing and supporting football. Come on England ⚽️

My football mad grandsons will be loving this.

gillybob Sun 24-Jun-18 14:29:11

Yes he is tanith thank goodness !

tanith Sun 24-Jun-18 14:12:40

For once the referee is taking heed of all the dirty tricks going on. Come on boys⚽️

gillybob Sun 24-Jun-18 14:05:06

Some excellent role models in this England team Grandma70s . They have put up with so many disgusting “professional” fouls and dirty unsportmen like behaviour and stayed very cool . Excellent role models for young footballers like my 8 year old footy mad grandson .

gillybob Sun 24-Jun-18 14:01:04

5-0 at half time who would have dreamt it ? I wonder what odds Ladbrokes would have given me on that score ?

I’m off to take one of DH’s blood pressure tablets before the second half !

Maybe my horrible nightmares of last night were a good omen ?

Greyduster Sun 24-Jun-18 13:57:12

I’m not the least bit interested in football, but am a captive audience today! I think that this is, so far, a most disgraceful exhibition from the Panama team. Half of them should have been sent off by now. C’mon England!

annodomini Sun 24-Jun-18 13:44:58

4 goals so far and now another penalty. And it's not quite half time.

Grandma70s Sun 24-Jun-18 13:27:45

I hate the nationalism and the macho culture. I couldn’t care less who wins, so it’s impossible for me to get interested.

My grandson (9) is the first male in our family to be interested in football. With any luck he’ll grow out of it. I worry about the role models.

merlotgran Sun 24-Jun-18 12:51:20

Good Luck England!!

I think I'll keep myself busy pickling gooseberries. grin

Waterloosunset Sun 24-Jun-18 12:26:35

Good luck England you can do it ⚽️

DanniRae Sun 24-Jun-18 11:22:28

Can I just ask why there is a rugby ball in the 'smiley' list when the FOOTBALL World Cup is on???
I too am very apprehensive about this match gillybob - along with about half of the population of England!
(I have sent you a pm BTW)

gillybob Sun 24-Jun-18 10:08:45

Looking forward to the England game today with a little apprehension (they are a very young team) but fingers crossed ? for a win .

Iam64 Fri 22-Jun-18 08:23:58

annodomini - I confess to rather enjoying watching Mr Hand of God himself, with his head in his hands, distraught at the way his team were playing. Their coach's blood pressure and heart rate seemed to be going up by the second, especially after he took his jacket off.
gillybob - I agree, the refs seem to have been hot on yellow cards, though one foul in last nights match could have been a red card.
I'm enjoying the pundits, especially the foreign players who played in our top clubs, their English is so good.

gillybob Fri 22-Jun-18 08:15:03

There seem to have been a fair few yellow cards given in most games anno and probably a lot more that could/should have been . I didn’t see the Argentina v Croatia game but reading match reports it seems the best team definitely won . I think there has been a lot of play acting and dirty stuff going on with some of the teams in this World Cup .

annodomini Thu 21-Jun-18 23:20:04

Iam, I was watching the end of the Croatia-Argentina match with DS1 - on the phone: him in Sandhurst and me in Cheshire! We were aghast at the behaviour of the Argentinian players and their lack of organisation and effort. Croatia had much the better team. There seemed to be a lot of yellow cards. Did anyone hear how many in total?

gillybob Thu 21-Jun-18 22:20:17

I managed to catch some of the Peru v France game today . I was gutted that Peru lost 1-0 and are therefore out of the competition . The French were lucky .

hildajenniJ Thu 21-Jun-18 22:13:30

Oh I missed all the football today. Had DGC for most of it. They watched endless YouTube videos of a boy and his dad destroying things to find out what was inside.

Sar53 Thu 21-Jun-18 21:11:03

Argentina lose 3-0, well what a turn up. My OH's daughter is married to an Argentinian, not a happy bunny me thinks.
