Thoroughly enjoyed watching the opening match last night with my 8 year old footy mad grandson .
And what a match it was too, 5-0 to the hosts Russia . The Saudis might not have been on the pitch at all .

Teresa May has stepped in to say that the Royal Mail workers and others should be allowed to fly the English flag during the tournament, after the misery guts at RM banned it’s workers from doing so. Quite right too .

I was rooting for Portugal ??. Simply because I have a Portuguese friend. I’m not football mad but it was such an exciting game that I forgot to turn over to watch my evening treat of George Clooney in the re runs of E R. Every four years my son gets all nostalgic and talks to me, his family and anyone who’ll listen about How as a boy he would have a sticker book and wall charts in the lead up to the World Cup and before a big match I’d take him to the local co-op and buy cola, sweets and crisps and we’d sit together and watch the game. I think he remembers it mostly because apart from Christmas it was the only time I allowed him to have junk food! (I was a mean mummy!) Its obviously an abiding fond memory. I’m thrilled that I’ve given him that to hold onto. Perhaps long after I’m gone he will recall the memory and tell his own grandchildren the same story.
I hope lots of similar lovely memories will be made for all of you and your families over the next few weeks while you watch the beautiful game. Ps wouldn’t it be fabulous if all the games were as exciting as last nights Spain v Portugal. Come on ???????

Sorry to join this thread late as I did not realise it was here.

Me and my other half have thoroughly enjoyed the tournament so far. The Spain versus Portugal game last night was truly " something else" and anyone who could not enjoy a sporting spectacle such as that, surely cannot know what enjoyment is.

Portugal and Spain are two great teams and both will go far in this tournament I am sure. However, I believe with the talent in the England team this time around we will have no problems whatsoever in overcoming them. grin

Anyone else watching France v Australia? I'm sure France will win but I'm supporting Australia because their captain plays for the team I follow, Aston Villa

We have been thinking about downsizing but the thought of just one living room has put me off. At the moment one of us can go and watch tv in the conservatory. Just imagine not being able to get away from sport. I would have to kill him!

Exactly anno that man is amazing ! That free kick . Wow ?

I was pleased it was a draw .

annodomini Sat 16-Jun-18 10:11:49

I'm more of a rugby fan myself, but tend to get carried away by football at the time of the World Cup. Sadly, Scotland, as usual, isn't involved, but, at a pinch, I'm prepared to support England wink. I was sorry for Spain last night but if they will give away a free kick when Ronaldo is there to take it, what do they expect?

Iam64 Sat 16-Jun-18 09:08:08

harrigran and Grandma70s - if you don't like football, you could play on the other thread running which asks what we'll be doing as an alternative.
I half watched the Spain v Portugal game last night. even only half watching whilst concentrating on crochet, it was fantastic football. I was rooting for Spain but there's no avoiding the genius that is the Renaldo.

bmacca Sat 16-Jun-18 09:04:17

I feel a bit conflicted about the Argentina / Iceland game too. I like Iceland but also think it would be wonderful for Messi if he ended up a World Cup winner.
This is the first World Cup since I retired so I'm insanely happy about being able to watch all the games!

I mean at work Rufus2 I work in Engineering (I run the office) but the lads are either out and about on site or in the factory out back so I tend to sit on my own day in and day out. I can’t go out as I’ve got to look after the phones (we do call outs) . It would pass the time if I could watch a bit footie during the day but don’t think the licensing laws allow it unless I watch in my phone which is a bit pointless.

You don’t know what your missing Grandma70s and harri last nights game was edge of seat stuff !

harrigran Sat 16-Jun-18 07:45:20

At last someone after my own heart Grandma70s, I was beginning to think that I was the only person who thought this way.

Grandma70s Sat 16-Jun-18 07:19:01

I just can’t see what’s interesting about kicking balls into nets. Quite fun for children, but grown-ups? So, so boring. I am not interested in the World Cup or any other football.

BlueBelle Sat 16-Jun-18 06:29:59

Not sure what your programmes are like in Oz Riufus but tv in NZ is pretty dire , so be careful what you wish for gillybob and Hilda ?
Although I ve got two teen grandson players one at county level I m afraid I can’t get excited about football i Used to love sport especially athletics but since so much drugs have hit the seen and all the money wasted and all the politics it’s gone for me I don’t even get excited about the Olympics anymore because of the drugs its spoilt it for me because it’s no longer about talent but who can cheat the system

NotAGran55 Sat 16-Jun-18 06:16:16

Amazing game . Messi to look forward to today , even though they are playing my second team Iceland .

Rufus2 Sat 16-Jun-18 01:21:53

even if I am sitting all on my own which I do most days

That's sad gillybob. Do you mean at home or at work?
I shall be "home alone", apart from a bottle or three of Australian Shiraz, some party pies, sausage rolls, packets of chicken-flavoured crisps ( I blow the diet on special occasions) and the central heating turned up a few notches to ward of a very cold Melbourne evening. grin Kick-off will be 7.00pm. Bliss!
Don't forget who you'll be booing! wink

Good Health and Good Viewing. wine wine wine

gillybob Fri 15-Jun-18 21:46:54

It was a fantastic game though wasn’t it ? smile

gillybob Fri 15-Jun-18 21:46:20

Me neither Danni but I’m not sure my heart can take it ! My grandson has got me in a whirl ! He’s supporting England (obviously) and his hero Ronaldo ( so Portugal) and he’s got Russia in his class sweep , I can’t keep up ! grin

DanniRae Fri 15-Jun-18 21:36:27

Amazing game - Spain v Portugal!!
Can't wait for England's first game on Monday.

Sar53 Fri 15-Jun-18 21:11:53

Brilliant game. Ronaldo is exceptional. OH and I both been watching, he favours Portugal more than Spain, it got a bit tense. I only hope we have more games that are as exciting as that one was. I know by Monday I shall start getting anxious about England's chances. I am one lady who loves football. Good to see I am not the only one on Gransnet.

Waterloosunset Fri 15-Jun-18 21:02:25

Yes Gilly I absolutely agree! Sensational game. Ronaldo was superb and Spain played so well after the chaotic build up to the WC.

hildajenniJ Fri 15-Jun-18 21:01:05

What a cracking game. Spain v Portugal! Either team could be finalists. Ronaldo is brilliant.

gillybob Fri 15-Jun-18 20:54:44

What a brilliant game . Edge of seat stuff ! Love love loved it . Ronaldo is a one man team ! grin

bmacca Fri 15-Jun-18 20:53:21

I absolutely love it! I was a bit put out earlier as I had to miss the second half of the Uruguay game to go to my daughter's wedding dress fitting ? Spain /Portugal game was brilliant

loopyloo Fri 15-Jun-18 20:06:44

Who do you think is going to win the cup? What I mean is who should I put money on? Belgium? Any tips gratefully received.

gillybob Fri 15-Jun-18 19:59:18

Indeed he is a joy to watch Iam I’m thoroughly enjoying it waterloosunset . It’s a very exciting game .

Iam64 Fri 15-Jun-18 19:54:29

Half time in the Portugal v Spain match. Great first half, great football. Renaldo May be a Show Pony but he is a joy to watch. I’m still rooting for Spain
