Long to short

Thanks travelsafar, My posts have evidently upset Gransnetters in the past so it is a relief to know my comments this time have not branded me an evil nay sayer. We are so afraid these days to state our opinions for fear of being called prejudiced that often we let certain behaviours go unchecked. On this topic I won't get started on disrespectful children.

Older women with long hair look fine if it is tied up

I think this is often true of younger women too.

I have a friend who has her long grey hair in two plaits, and another who has one plait, forward over one shoulder.
They both look great.

I had very long hair for many years but have it quite short now. Still trying to find a compromise between spiky and sticking-up strangely.

Jaxie i agree older women with long straggly greying hair can look a bit 'witchy woo.'
There is an elderly lady who lives near me with long grey hair but she always looks beautiful, her hair either in a plait which is curled round the back of her head, not sure how she manages to do that, or a bun with a lovely clip holding it in place.She always wears very loose tea dresses and flat sandals and carries a wicker basket.She reminds me of someone who was probably a hippie back in the day, short structured hair would look so odd on her bearing in mind her clothing and footwear.

I often see a woman walking down my road with grey hair loose down her back to below waist level. She is known as the voodoo doll as it looks awful. She is very wrinkled facially and this may sound catty but she looks positively scary and lacking in dignity. Older women with long hair look fine if it is tied up, but nobody loves a fairy when she's forty!

Anyone else notice that (on the whole) we either have nice hair OR nails? Rarely both!

Ive had short hair for the last 25 years -wash it twice a week and it never goes greasy or flat. But I suppose it depends on your hair type.
Now Im growing it longer and finding it much harder to manage -takes a lot more time to wash ,dry and style.

Well done, Hazbeen. I bet it takes years off you. The danger with short hair is that it can go flat. Get some hair mousse and apply it before drying your hair. Then blow dry as usual. It will give your hair lasting body. No worries if you don't wash you hair every day, the effect lasts for days. It's a real godsend.

travels I have a short bob style with long-ish layers in it,
It looks fine just brushed in the morning, and I only shampoo every three days ( although I have a shower, obviously, every morning.)

I too have been toying with the idea of getting my hair cut short again. But when i remember it meant washing every day and faffing around with it it puts me off.I can just brush in the morning and put up in a bun, sorted.I get it trimmed every 2-3months, and get my fringe cut every 4/5 weeks free of charge by by hairdresser.

As a child I had curly hair, then my Mum had it cut and it never curled again . In my teens I could sit on it, but rushing to work every day with wet hair hanging down my back became tiresome so I had it cut very short - think the Mia Farrow style. Over the years I've had lots of styles but now at 67 I have settled on a short very lightly permed style which I can wash, run my hands through and leave it to dry into a softly tousled look with lots of movement (not curly). If I want it a bit straighter I can blow dry it. A perm lasts me about 3 months with an interim cut & blow dry after six weeks. Two years ago I let it go grey, and I love it, so liberating, no colouring and roots to bother with.

I took the plunge a few years ago. I just asked my hairdresser to cut my long hair short. She is a genius with hair, so I left her to it when she said that she knew just the style to suit me.
I have never looked back. I always have bed-hair, but it was the same when I had long hair anyway. It doesn't take me long to bring it back to normality. I just dampen it down, and use a hot brush to restyle it, takes just a few minutes.

I also took the plunge and had my hair cut short and really like it,although i do have to put some rollers in to give it a bit of a lift,and also have gone grey now and everyone says how nice it looks.I brought a hair thinning comb from Amazon too so no need to go to the hairdressers anymore as can manage it myself.

I too have always had long hair, so easy to look after, just wash, run the straighteners over it when dry and that's it done for the next few days. But, having lost a lot of it with chemo last year I have ended up with short hair at the grand old age of 70, I will never grow it again! Although I don't find it easier to look after, I now know what 'bed hair' means, I have to 'do'it every day and it grows at an alarming rate. So many advantages to having it long, but I actually think it suits me short.

I have Judy Dench hair, natural colour and I love it. 5 minutes to wash and dry in the mornings!!

My late mum always used to tell me I should cut my hair as long hair on women over 40 is ridiculous!..Well I've still got long hair ,cut in layers and I curl it every morning .It doesn't take long and I get lots of compliments on it.If you're happier with your hair short thats fine but dont be talked into it by anyone else.The only problem I have is mine grows very fast ,my hairdresser uses me as an example to folk who say your hair stops growing after a certain age as at 64 mine will easily grow 3 or 4 inches between 6 weekly cuts .Nw if anyone can tell me how to make my nails grow that would be great as they are shocking .

My granddaughter had her beautiful locks cut off (whilst I cried ?) and the hairdresser sent her ponytail to to them. It's a great cause.

Just posted my plait to Little Princess Trust, thanks for the suggestion Chewbacca! I hope it will be of use to them. I would have hated to put it in the rubbish!

I have grown my hair just shoulder length, long layers. It is thick and bushy, and for years I tried all sorts of shorter styles, hoping for the elusive wash and go style everyone mentions.

I woke up every morning with it all flat and messed up. I had to wash it everyday to get it back into a bouncy style, and use products to try and improve the look.

Now I roughly blow dry with a big brush. Sometimes I use my Babylis big hair rotating brush. Then I can go at least 4 or 5 days between washes. If it's hot I tie it back. I know it doesn't look good too long, this works best for me.

I've found chin length hair easier to deal with and it looks much thicker. Short hair goes in every direction when I sleep on it and I don't do faff!

The good thing about hair is that (so long as we are well) it will regrow if we don’t like it or fancy a change.
I had my long hair cut quite short - well above shoulder length, about 2 years ago when I wanted to focus on “me” - but sadly found it did need quite a lot more attention than when it was long. Maybe because my hair is fine and straight, but I had to faff around with “products” and couldn’t get away without blow-drying. In the end I feel I’ve tried that now and although I was happy with it shorter, I just feel more “myself” with it long.

Nevertheless, I would definitely say to try it out as it will certainly reveal a new you! My daughters think it’s hilarious how long I was thinking about it as they are regularly doing different things with theirs. If at the end you decide it’s not you, it will soon grow back. I don’t know what I was worrying about!
