Coffee to go

My husband never drinks coffee at home. Tea is his comfort "I'm at home at last" drink.
He works very long hours and daily he travels across the UK.
Mcdonalds coffee is quick to buy on drive through, lone cup daily is his morning saviour.
He won't buy Costa or the other main coffee outlet because he's read something about the ethics of the companies.

Sounds to be as if this young mother has such a stressful time of it getting her six year old up, dressed, breakfasted and taken to school, that she needs a cup of coffee she doesn't have to make herself before facing the rest of her day.

We surely all have known times when anything was better than just getting on with the next job on the list.

I know I have often wondered how other people can afford the things they can and do, but I am sure they wonder the same about me!

We stopped buying instant coffee.
We have a nespresso coffee machine, make our own coffee.
We also like a Costa coffee when we go shopping. Which we drink in, can’t stand those throwaway cups.

I don't know MawBroon. I often disapprovinly watch people fill their trolley with rubbish food and as someone said I wonder about all those people in Corrie eating breakfast a few steps from their house most mornings and spending so much in the pub. We are only human after all. Perhaps it's as well we don't always say what we are thinking lol. Oh I do love gransnet ?

I never have a drink or eat in the street but it goes back to my grammar school days. It was a school rule that you should not eat or drink in the street while wearing the school uniform - or on the bus as we all used London Transport! This has simply stuck with me and it is just something I choose not to do - but I have no issue with sitting at a pavement café eating and drinking!! Silly really but just how it is.

The fact that I have never ever bought ‘coffee to go’( or anything to go, come to that) and have never had pizza delivered either.?

The awareness of the environmental impact of non-disposable cups is surely relatively recent , Nanny27 so I think we should not rush to be too judgemental!
OP did however stress her disapproval of the perceived waste of money with a passing reference to the environment
why pay for a cup of coffee every morning, carry it home when one is just 7 minutes away from home, where she could make one herself? To me it seems a waste of money and not good for the environment

Frankly what other people spend their money on is none of our business and with a few exceptions most of us seem to feel this is a non-issue

That would be a fair point but there were a number of comments about how much money she “wasted” instead of having her coffee at home and these were the ones I objected to! I have a reusable coffee cup which I take to be filled and no problem. If the post and replies had confined them selves to that topic in might have been better

I don't think the issue is with drinking in coffee shops jenpax but rather the thoughtless impact on the environment by those who use take-away cups.

Goodness me! I also regularly buy a coffee from my local independent coffee shop which I carry to and drink at work! At weekends I often meet friends for coffee and breakfast/brunch in a coffee shop! It never ever occurred to me that there would be people busy totting up my purchases and judging me for them?
I work hard for my salary and choose to spend some of my disposable income in eating and drinking out and damn the calories in my latte! I don’t judge other people who spend their money on other things even things I would consider a waste of money for my self! It’s live and let live in my book!
This post has been an eye opener to me as I really never considered that anyone would judge another (unknown passerby!) for their coffee purchase!!!

I absolutely agree. I never understand really what people mean when they say "get a life", so I would be interested if lesley4357 could explain what she meant by the comment to mabon1. Maybe she could tell us all what kind of life mabon1 should have/live, that would please lesley4357, and why she thinks that mabon1's life isn't up to her (lesley4357's) standards.

Maybe I should start a thread about "get a life" to find out what is meant when it is said. I find it a very aggressive, and abominably rude, thing thing to say to anyone.

For what it's worth, I have no issue with anyone buying coffee from a coffee shop if that's what they want to spend their money on. It's not something I would do regularly, because it does seem a waste of money to me, but that doesn't make me superior to those who do.

My issue with it is that they always seem to be drank (drunk?) consumed from a disposable cup, which, as has been pointed out above, are rarely recyclable.

Take along your own, reusable cup, and with my (un-sought-after ) blessing, enjoy your drinks

Me too. I do a lot of shouting at Corrie

And also when the factory workers are out of work, they are ALWAYS in the Rovers or in Roys Rolls. No one EVER seems to claim benefits, so where do they get the money to afford this lifestyle!

But - I just keep telling myself to take a breath. It's a soap, not a documentary, and the Rovers and the cafe etc are places where the characters come together so we can see their interactions.

Maybe she's just rebelling against all the virtue signalling about not using unrecyclable cups. Maybe it gets up her nose, so to speak.

Or maybe she just likes the kiosk coffee and can afford it. Perhaps she will even bring along her own washable cup in due course.

Meanwhile perhaps observers of her coffee buying behaviour could perhaps learn to mind their own business.

I'm not particularly interested in this woman and her coffee but mabon1 raised it as a point for chatting and I think that aggressive comments like "get a life" lesley 4357 are unnecessary and not in the usual friendly gransnet spirit.

Nobodies business what she spends her money on .I've never been in one of these coffee shops as I dont drink coffee,I also dont eat fast food and rarely have a takeaway ...maybe twice a year ...if that.Thats MY choice,your neighbour chooses to have a coffee at the beginning of what might be a busy day ,good for her.

I do the same sometimes, in fact after a visit to the GP, I went for a latte.
I wonder why people are so interested, I would not give it a second thought. She probably has a nice coffee, that she cannot make at home before she gets on with the rest of the day. Good luck to her.

It is a thin base with plenty of cheese on it and then the honey and nuts after it was cooked. This is in France - but I have never seen one before either.

Welshwife Your tomato-less pizza sounds lovely. I really didn't know you could get pizzas that don't have tomato in them! It would suit me down to the ground as I can't stand tomatoes in any way, shape or form.

Not quite sure why this is a problem?? It's her money, and also her choice. We all deserve some 'me time', and we all spend our money on how we see fit...it's obviously her little treat for the day....fair play to her I say

I think that more environmental damage is done by people driving their children to school than one mum buying a coffee.

Maybe it is a cappuccino or some other type she cannot get at home, or she might live with a Mormon or JW who does not allow coffee in the house ( she might pass a bin before she gets home for the empty cup) or maybe she has a coffee at the kiosk talking with other mums and is carrying the empty back, or buys another to take back for someone else. The possibilities are endless so we cannot judge a person on such a small action, but if you have a literary beny it could be woven into a detective story!
