Possessions 'lost' in storage

My (divorced) mum started moving me regularly to new cities (including new schools x 12) from childhood, and to some extent I followed suit but now in later life, I can't bear the thought of moving. But my point is, so many times things were put in storage, presumably to be reclaimed later. (Mostly in the US). The majority of these storage items have been long forgotten - never reclaimed - and every time I see those dreadful shows where people buy abandoned storage units, I turn the channel so I don't see someone coming across my old Beatle albums!! I am generally a positive person and I'm grateful for the many family letters and photos that I do have, but things like my granny's British passport from 1920 that we lost make me sad. This storage unit trend seems to be increasing in the UK. I just wonder if anyone else has had this experience.

My DF was in the army. When we were in the UK we had all our possessions round us but when sent overseas we couldn't take everything with us, so stuff would go into storage for a couple of years. I have never entirely recovered from discovering, when DF retired to civilian life and things came out of storage for the last time, that my cardboard box of treasures, many of them, items I had chosen to keep from a beloved Grandmother's house, which was sold when she died had disappeared and although my DM did try to replace some of the things, it was not the same. The associations were with who had owned the items rather than the items themselves.
