A gaggle of gurning grandads

Come off it NanKate! shock
I've always avoided being seen in Glasgow and never will.
That's why I moved as far away as poss. Melbourne in fact. grin

If you must know, my physog reminds me of the Alfred Hitchcock horror film "the Picture of Dorian Grey" when his portrait in the attic was suddenly revealed; typical Hitchcock style.

This would have been before your time, but I was a grown lad then and it still made me jump.
Since then, I've avoided storing portraits of myself anywhere in the house and even The Shed.!
Also stopped preening myself in the mirror and bought an electric razor instead.! grin

Now you'll probably cause me to have nightmares tonight. sad

Ta-Ra, Good Health and Sweet Dreams if poss. smile

I call my DC chick, and pet. They haven’t complained - not to me at any rate. ?

NanKate Thu 31-May-18 07:12:25

I like your thinking Chewbacca

Jalima1108 Wed 30-May-18 23:24:42

My mother used to call me 'chick'
That was until I was about 8.

Chewbacca Wed 30-May-18 21:38:57

The collective noun for grannies should be a parliament. We're mostly wise, like owls.

NanKate Wed 30-May-18 20:59:48

Collective nouns

A gorgeous group of grannies

A gaggle of gurning grandads

Rufus2 Tue 29-May-18 15:23:31

I wpuld be very very careful abouf calling us chicks Rufus! ☺

Of course, Pollyperkins!
I've confused myself thinking of our local supermarket check-out chicks. grin
Sorry about that.
I shall have to be more than very, very careful next time I try to compliment you about your ages. smile

What would you prefer?

I can't think of a complimentary collective noun for
Grannies, so you'll have to help me out of this hole I'm digging for myself. sad

It's now past midnight and time for bed, so I'll say
Ta-Ra and Good Health. Sweet Dreams. smile

Although....I have a sneaking feeling you enjoy chatting to Grandmas even more

Thanks for that lemongrove. I've cheered up already. smile
Of course I do!

Problem is other Grandads don't seem at all keen on meeting me or the other Shed resident. sad

On the other hand Grandmas have always been delightful to chat with like yourself, although a couple have boxed me round the ears from time to time when they imagined I was patronising them. A taboo word apparently. Now I have to scan my posts to see if I am likely to be patronising anyone. [shock

Anyway I can't complain. With so many Chicks to chat with and so few Roosters around I feel like cock of the roost, if you see what I mean. grin
And please don't tell me I'm patronising again. sad
Take care

lemongrove Tue 29-May-18 10:08:19

It was just a thought Rufus as you seemed so keen on meeting other Grandads.
Although....I have a sneaking feeling you enjoy chatting to Grandmas even more.wink

ask not what the Shed can do for you but what you can do for the Shed etc
Jalima: tried that! Asked him what were his interests in life, but not even the courtesy of a reply. Poor! sad

What about "Abandon Hope all Ye who Enter Here!"

Being a democratic gentleman I'll talk to my (only) Shed companion first and recommend that we abandon it and stick up a "For Sale" notice. Don't think we'll get much for it though.

We already have Plan B active. shock

Lemongrove; Pardon me; but as Delboy might say, "What's that got to do with the price of Fish?"

A quick look at that J.R.M. thread (never heard of him down here) tells me that he's a politician of sorts and we all know how we hate being patronised. grin
So; No thanks.

Oh well! I give up. sad

One of those was the Grandad who stuck his head inside the Shed to see " what was in it for him"
ask not what the Shed can do for you but what you can do for the Shed etc.

See if you can engage him in manly talk Rufus.
Yes, you could encourage him into the Shed

lemongrove Mon 28-May-18 14:42:57

Well, there is Grandad43 but his natural habitat is not the shed but on the Jacob Rees Mogg thread.See if you can engage him in manly talk Rufus.

Rufus2 Mon 28-May-18 14:35:30

Thanks for that Pollyperkins, but unfortunately not much help. sad

One of those was the Grandad who stuck his head inside the Shed to see " what was in it for him"
Not much of a prospect; glad to say he's not been back.

I keep my eyes open; don't worry about that.
Your other suggestion (non-cafe) reminds me of a rather suggestive type who was apparently not very endearing to our Grannies.
Or are my wires crossed again? confused
Michael would be welcome, especially bearing coffee (flat white; no sugar thanks!) My favourite morning kick-starter.

But as I said before, IMO the onus should be for Grandads to identify themselves, even if only to say "no thanks". smile

pollyperkins Mon 28-May-18 14:02:38

There are a few men around Rufus. Someone called Michael opens Gransnet cafe every day. Then there's Grumppa and Wobbly bits and at least two others whose name I forget. Just keep your eyes open.

without having to know whether they were male or female, or feeling he had to either flirt or fight

Thank you for your posts, Jalima and Elegran.

However, shouldn't that be "fight or flirt" to maintain the sense of your post? I'd hate to be caught flirting with a male Grandad in the Shed! That's not what it's for, is it? [Only Joking smile ]
No! I never get frustrated, but do I "chat- up" a poster by asking if they are M or F? No thanks! I think I'd get some funny answers! shock
IMO the onus is on Grandads to step forward, place a post in the Shed and then we can take it from there.
"Mantalk" and all that stuff! grin

Ta-Ra and Good Health

Elegran Sun 27-May-18 20:22:24

I was wondering how many posters are grandads. I could name maybe half a dozen, but unless they made a point of telling us so, or left clues like "My wife says . . " it is not always obvious.

Perhaps Rufus2 has overlooked a lot of Grandads? If he chatted with posters as though they were just people, without having to know whether they were male or female, or feeling he had to either flirt or fight, he would find gransnet less frustrating.

Jalima1108 Sun 27-May-18 20:11:54

I think so - just read the posts! hmm

Elegran Sun 27-May-18 15:07:19

How would we recognise a grandad if he had a neutral name and just posted without mentioning it? Are there any secret clues?

Jalima1108 Sun 27-May-18 14:31:43

Anyone could be a Grandad Rufus - that's the thing, we never know!

Rufus2 Sun 27-May-18 14:13:21

Welcome all newcomers! I'm no longer a "Newbie".

Was welcomed with open arms 2 whole months ago and now graduated to a venerable "Oldie". At least that's what it feels like. grin
I have a question for our resident spoof-spotters. I don't know how you do it, but have you also spotted any Grandads amongst our newcomers?
As we all know, there is a dearth of same and I'm afraid that we are in danger of becoming an endangered species. sad
We need an injection of fresh blood.
When I enquired earlier, I was told to look in Grandad's Shed, but that was fake news.
There was only one, who was glad to see me, but as he said, we must be using the wrong soap.
One other stuck his head in the door, said he was looking to see what was in it for him; not a very promising prospect; hasn't been back.
I'm now afraid the Shed will suffer an attack of woodworm and have to be demolished. sad

So where are all the DHs and fellow widowers?
Are you not allowed out or active in other forums?
It's hard to tell who's behind certain nicknames, but I suspect not.

Oh well; we can only live in hope. smile

I dont think Ive seen the ones you are referring to.

Thanks for the link Jalima

Jalima1108 Sat 26-May-18 20:40:10

^ prefer to assume very post is genuine unless proved otherwise.^
Well, I'm not sure about the school uniforms or onesies threads!

I was going to query the cost of school uniforms but am thinking twice about it.

pollyperkins Sat 26-May-18 17:05:06

Well I must be very naive! I prefer to assume very post is genuine unless proved otherwise. I think it must upset genuine posters if they are not believed. And if they are laughing at me who cares? I dont know them and they don't know me!
I dont like it when threads deteriorate into personal abuse or people take offence where none was intended. Surely we can have different opinions without falling out?sorry if I sound self righteous Im quite xapable of upsetting someone unintentially with a thoughtless or insensirive comment . But I do try to apologise! I agree that it's good to have some new members and I hope they enjoy the discussions. .
