When we asked my Nan where something we wanted was she would reply "up in Annie's room behind the wallpaper". Never found out why or where that came from.

"You'll meet yourself coming back" was another one if someone was rushing around.

My Mum used to say "A blind man on a galloping horse wouldn't see that,!" if there was a dirty mark on something. If you asked my Dad what colour something was, he would always say "Sky blue pink with a finny-addy border."

When we moved to the Wigan area, many years ago, I couldn't understand a word that the old people, in particular, were saying. They used such a lot of dialect words, such as "I'm fair clempt" meaning that they were hungry, that it was almost like living in a foreign country! Each little district had their own way of speaking, and people knew instantly where you came from, even if it was only a couple of miles away.
I gradually became 'tuned-in' and loved listening to th'owd fauk and their tales. Sadly, television has killed off most of the old accents and expressions.

If you asked my Gran where she was going or where she had been the reply was always "round Will's mother's and back again"

If I asked my mother if she would buy me something, she would always reply "wait and see as Mr Asquith said" I did not know who Mr Asquith was until much later!

My Dad: about someone who was cross eyed: 'One eye going for the shopping and the other one coming home with the change'.

If someone wore a pair of tight trousers my dad used to it looks like a couple of ferrets trying to get out of a sack.

So many of these sayings I grew up with (West Riding of Yorkshire now North Yorkshire). If a petticoat was showing it was "snowing down south".

When my grandad was asked where he was going he said the Parrafin Oil shop. Years later I was in my car, with my Mum and we stopped at the lights and opposite was a Pub called The Parrafin Oil shop. The mystery was solved, I could not stop laughing.

We came from Worcester and my dad used to say
I've got a bone in me leg' if i wanted him to take me somewhere or 'steady past your grannys' which didn't mean anything or 'there n back to see how far it is' Or 'gone to see a man about a dog' I used to try some of these evasive things on my own girls n it seemed to make them very angry!
