daft sayings

I've heard some funny sayings since coming to live in Wales such as: " who's coat is that jacket?" and "I'll be there now in a minute"
But my DH has some great ones from Worcestershire where he is from, he says "nobody will stop their horse to look at that" when he sees I'm undecided about something, but the best one is when he visits the loo, he says " I'm off to turn my bike around" grin
Any other regional daftness?

When we asked my Nan where something we wanted was she would reply "up in Annie's room behind the wallpaper". Never found out why or where that came from.

"You'll meet yourself coming back" was another one if someone was rushing around.

When the sky looks dark my friend, from Norfolk, says that it looks black over Wills mother's house. I have no idea who Will is or was !!

It's as straight as a dog's hind leg. Said in the West of Scotland of anything that was squint or "skew-wiff".

"Their eyes were standing out like chapel hat-pegs" said of my grandmother who came from Edinburgh of people busy minding other peoples' business.

"Wet behind the ears" for someone inexperienced.
"Shes no oil painting" for someone not considered pretty.
"Where's me tin linings" in a broad Devon accent by my Devonian aunt when my Dad drove too fast!

As another person on here has said, I'm now oftrn hearing my Mum speak when I open my mouth .....

grannyticktock I like that toilet expression! My grandfather (Welsh) used to say "I'm going to point Percy at the porcelain".

Dark, cloudy sky referred to as "It's a bit black over Bill's mother's"

I'm a Scot living in Wales and have heard 'whose jumper is this cardi'. 'He'd no keep a pig in a poke' is one I grew up with.

My aunt used to scratch her back on the doorpost and say, “God Bless the Duke of Argyll” ??? Also to someone blocking a view, “ Your father wasn’t a glazier”.

You make a better door than a window - to anyone blocking a view or in the way.
Were you born in a barn? - said to anyone leaving the door open.

My mums favourite was off to spend a penny, when she went to loo. Took me a time to realise that most public loos charged you a penny.
All fur coat and no knickers was an east end saying my nan often said that.
Yes I remember Charleydead KatyK another one I couldn’t understand. Also if you were screwing up your face was told you’ll stay like that.

To someone blocking your view: "You'd make a better door than a window!"

Milly Mon 21-May-18 11:40:57

My Mother in law used to say Many a Mickle makes a Muckle which roughly translated means Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves!

My friend in Yorkshire makes me laugh when she says “ I’m running round in so many circles I’m going to disappear up my own bum” !! She used to laugh at my southern accent, she said I’m the only person she knows who can call someone a “ b.....d” and it sounds like I’m paying them a compliment !

Sitting here won't buy the bairn a new pair of shoes.

Caught between a rock and a hard place.

A blind man on a galloping horse wouldn't notice.

You'll pass in the dark.

Get out the way and let the dog see the rabbit.

HootyMcOwlface Mon 21-May-18 10:52:51

My mother (instead of ok or something like that) used to say Right said she so she wrote.

RobtheFox Mon 21-May-18 10:50:09

Don't worry about the tomorrow because "Sufficient for the day are the evils thereof"

Maggiemaybe Mon 21-May-18 10:44:11

Also unhelpful when you've lost something: it'll be in the last place you look.

All fur coat and no knickers blush, or as a colleague once shouted down the corridor at me: red shoes and no knickers. Not true, btw!
