Wedding cake.

I thought it was beautiful. Much nicer than the old "tower of cakes" . This one is modern and pretty - and it may even be eaten, instead of being wrapped up and kept as a souvenir like the old fruit cakes were.

most cakes nowadays aren't fruitcake.They tend to be different flavours for each layer BUT most we've photographed are still towers...even the 8 tier monster we saw last year .I sometimes make cakes for family and I usually make the bottom tier fruitcake for a stable base with the different flavours for the smaller tiers .Works well as a lot of older guests love a bit of ruit cake soaked in cognac.My GD's christening cake was made with a genoise sponge but with cubes 3" square of fruit cake iced like building blocks and with her name as a letter on each block on the top of the sponge.Meant great grannies weren't deprived ..lol

It is pretty and modern stella IMHO it/they would have looked better on simple stands though.
I'm not keen on rich fruit cake and hate marzipan. We had the traditional three tiers with plaster pillars between and horseshoes, paper bells, and flower sprigs adorning it. Now it seems the custom to just pile the layers on top of each other.

I am not altogether in favour of the traditional heavy fruit cake,complete with marzipan and icing.
Give me a nice plain sponge mixture laden with cream and fresh strawberries or better still a Pavlova............although,yes I know full well,neither "fit the bill" as a traditional wedding cake!!
But then neither does Harry and Meghan`s Wedding cake so perhaps traditional has had its day.........

I think they look better if they're tall ninathenanaso when I make a 4 tier I place the bottom 3 on top of each other with tall pillars holding up the top tier ,it also means theres space within the pillars for decoration to compliment the cake topper

We had a vanilla cake with fondant icing and fondant flowers (purple flowers, because it was our wedding colour) for our wedding.

We made sure not to have royal icing. That's what my parents had for their wedding cake and it was almost impossible to cut.

I have heard of all sorts of different options for wedding cakes. Some couples decide to have a "cake" or "tower" made of individual cupcakes. A friend of mine and her husband didn't really care for cake so they had a "cake" made of vanilla slices (aka Neapolitan squares; layers of flaky pastry with vanilla custard and whipped cream between the layers). It still looked very nice.

I'm aware that it's a buttercream finish rather than royal icing, but if I couldn't get a better finish on my buttercream than that, I wouldn't bother! It looks messy, the finish isn't even close to smooth enough!

agnurse we've seen stacks of cheese,huge rounds of cheddar and camembert and stilton etc ,with baskets of fruit and selections of crackers .Its a great alternative for people who dont eat cake.I should say that we have photographed over 4000 weddings in our careers so if theres a cake we haven't seen I'd be surprised

Never heard of that one but it sounds neat! Especially appropriate if it's a less formal reception and/or there are people present who can't eat a lot of sweets. I think the neatest thing I saw was the cake at the wedding of a friend of my dad's. She and her husband had a rather unique idea. Instead of tossing her bouquet (the reception was on a different day than the wedding due to logistics) they had a bunch of ribbons put into the cake and hanging out. One was attached to a ring. At a certain point all the single women were invited to take a ribbon and pull it. The woman who got the ring (not me or my sister; someone else) was thought to be the next to be married.

A relative got married recently and the cake stood in a marquee for more than 24 hours uncut. We received pieces of cake a week later but I put it in the bin, we had seen the flies and the children prodding the icing.
I don't like to see fresh flowers just placed on top of the cake.

If you take all the gold stands away, as Juggernaut says, the icing isnt great. One of those cases where you hope it tasted nice!

Our DS and DDiL had two cakes, one sponge as DDiL loathes fruitcake, and one Cheese Cake Tower.
The cheeses were arranged on wooden boards, five layers in all, bottom layer was Cheddar, followed by Bowland, Shropshire Blue, Stilton and topped by a creamy Lancashire wheel. There were fresh figs and grapes in the arrangement too, and it was served with many differing types of crackers and pickles/chutneys. It was very popular, and the wedding having been over three years ago, it was one of the first 'cheese cakes' anyone had seen!

My DIL's mother made my youngest son & DIL's cake which was 4 layers of chocolate cake covered in a chocolate ganache with pink gerberas around each layer. She practised it at our house several times before the event so we knew how to assemble it. It sounds extremely sickly but in fact it was far from it as it was made with bitter chocolate and had a raspberry layer in it so it was delicious and looked beautiful.

I heard today the Royal cake cost £50,000 - reading the ingredients I guess this may be correct - I hope it tasted as wonderful as it looks.
