H ! looking for advice, information, answers to the question ...should I buy a retirement flat ...when I say 'specialist' I mean those directly meant for the over 60's etc .......I have been researching all over the UK (preferably by the sea) but they vary in price and facilities greatly ..my husband has Parkinson's disease and we currently live in France. The problem is, as his illness progresses he may be likely to need more care than I, as his sole carer, will be able to manage. There is currently only one retirement complex that can provide this (without it being a 'care home' or nursing home .....but these flats will not be completed until 2019 at the earliest and the charges are 6,888 per annum (not including insurance, bills, land rent, council tax etc) and to start with they are around £300,000 to purchase (leasehold) on an ever decreasing valuation ....and leaving the inheritors a lot of expenses to pay !
Dilemma ......does anyone out there live in one of these type of flats ? Is it better to buy, say, an individual bungalow on a 'home for life' scheme (not sure we wold be eligible as we do not currently live in the UK and there is some rule afoot where you must show utility bills, etc etc to prove your residency qualifications (We are both UK Citizens with passports, etc )
I also feel very concerned at the level of security living on our own in a bungalow with no friends or family rather than in a retirement flat .....currently looking at the North East (Whitley Bay, Newcastle etc) , Margate (husband's daughter lives there) or anywhere really ....doesn't matter as long as the price and the apartment are right !
What do you think about these schemes ? Thanks for any advice !
