Fake news is not just a jolly jape. It is usually used on social media and is designed either to promote something or to denigrate it. Perhaps the most obvious example was the apparent news that Hillary Clinton was running a paedophile ring from a pizza parlour basement. The cafe didn't actually have a basement and, of course, Hillary Clinton was not running any sort of criminal activity, but that didn't stop a man with a gun and a lot of anger entering the place. Fake news is a form of propaganda that usually has a political aim. However, a lot of fake news during the last election in America was, apparently a money scam set up, I think, somewhere in Greece – get enough hits, you get the advertising revenue.
