My husband and I used to share the driving on long journeys, then he had a stroke. For several years we were unable to go on holiday. I did all the driving, but only for necessary and fairly local trips After he died I thought that I would be free to drive long distances again, but find that I have lost my confidence. I don't mind motorways. It's the thought of meeting those complicated junctions, with umpteen signs, and traffic changing lanes all over the place. I feel that my reactions, at 78, just aren't good enough to cope with them safely.
I have decided to stick with the areas I know. I can get around for social activities, shopping, etc and use the bus or train if I want to go to the city, or on holiday. It's frustrating that I can't just jump in the car and take off to anywhere I like, but it's also important to accept my limitations, and be safe.
