What songs do you sing to your DGC?

Before my GC went to school and I picked them up to come to me we had a nursery rhyme CD blaring out along the way. I knew just where we should be at the beginning of each song!!! It was great fun. They are now teaching me songs and rhymes!

Oh I had quite forgotten You canny shove your granny off a bus!! Marvellous.
I sing Hush little baby (mocking bird) and Never smile at a crocodile
When I’m saying goodbye to the two four year olds I ask them ‘what do you have to remember?’ And they sing Never smile at a crocodile back to me!
When I was coming round from a serious operation my children (in their 30s) were waiting on the ward so I asked the nurse to tell them I said NSAAC so they would know I was ok!! ?

I sing to my grandson, just 4, all the time. Favourite right now is ‘There was an old woman who swallowed a fly”. All that wriggling, giggling and tickling?

I started off with DGD no 1 , 11 years ago ..... as soon as she was old enough to speak if I started to sing she'd say No Nana. Child has no ear for music plainly.

With DGS no2 - I went down the same path - he cried every time I started . Another one with no ear for music.

No 3 shouted ' Stop it Nana ! NO SINGING !!!' hmmmmmm

No 4 put the final nail in my musical coffin when i was singing to him as we were driving along and he said ' Stop it Nana- its horrible'!!!

Out of the mouths of babes eh?

How much is that doggy in the window...and morning town to my now 19 year old DGD.....New DGD due in June to my son ....wonder what I will sing then ...just happens naturally

My Dad used to sing this to my DCs

Oh, A--, she is a funny one
With a nose like a pickled onion.
A face like a squashed tomato.
And feet like flat fish.
All his GCs loved it as it could be personalised.
My GDs loved it too.But I have never heard it outside our family.

Up the tall white candle stick (complete with hand actions) always gets a big laugh from my dgs.

One of the most moving moments of being a grandparent so far though was hearing, through the baby monitor, dil singing Lavender’s Blue to dgs while she was putting him to bed.

Pretty well most of the songs mentioned here are part of my repertoire now I come to think of it!! Jangran99 you have also reminded me that I changed the words of several songs to fit each child. "Ally Bally..." converted nicely to my youngest DGD's name and I added 'waiting for a kiss from me'. They all still remember their songs so they must have had some impact. They all still enjoy singing (though some of the girl band songs are not to my taste!!)

Au clair de la lune, Chevaliers de la table ronde, Les Avants de Bayonne, Ilkley Moor b'ah t'hat (the perfect lullaby; no infant can cope with its tedium).

Twinkle twinkle little star is my DGDs favourite song for just before she goes to sleep. I also sing row row row the boat, heads shoulders, knees and toes, hickory dickory dock and five little ducks. She is 2 and a half and DGD2 due to be delivered this Friday as my DD in hospital at the moment. Will have to think up some new ones for baby!!

Jangran Morningtown ride is also favourite to sing to my little grandsons.

Rocking to sleep Tommy Thumb where are you still works even though DGS is now four and a half.
I also sing one that my DGM sang to me Crying for a wee bawbee
However my 4 year old grandson enjoys singing scary flying shark to me and delights in singing 'it will bite you on the bum'!!

The rocking to sleep song was always "Three wheels on my waggon" - same as for their dad when he was a baby. I also got quite good at all the words for Postman Pat and Fireman Sam.

All sorts when we see them but they live in another country so we mainly talk on Skype. GS3 and I have our special song Yingtong! Yes, not really a nursery rhyme, DSs were shocked and somehow thought it was racist but GS3 loves it and has now changed it to: Ying tong, ying tong, ying tong, ying tong, ying tong tiddly I poh, I love you!

When I was trying to get my DGD off to sleep when she was a baby, I used to sing Lazy bones, sleeping in the sun. It worked every time!

The runaway train is a favourite here too, also Donal, where's your trousers. I don't sing them though, we ask Alexa to play them. ??

DH still enthrals all with his exuberant rendition of Little White Bull, especially the 'Trotting right behind them' line.
I used to make DD giggle singing the Carpenters' Close to You. She loved the little trill at the end of 'Starlight in your eyes of Blue'. Ahh, this has brought back so many happy memories.

We liked that one too, teetime.

I used to sing Morningtown Ride to DGS but he's almost 14 now and wouldn't appreciate it!!!

I love to sing, but have a truly terrible voice. Truly! My sons, 7 year age gap, each said to me when they were young "please stop singing Mummy". Didn't stop me singing to my grandson, although only if no- one was around. I am a mole and I live in a hole, octopus's garden, you are my sunshine.

Isn't it wonderful how the tunes and words come into your head when you have a baby on your lap. I thought I'd long forgotten the nursery songs and rhymes. Sing a song of sixpence etc.
Now I have a 6 month old again.

From birth I sang Row, row your boat to GC whilst rocking them in my arms. I found that they quickly went off to sleep, there again it could just have been my voice

Myfanwy at bedtime , it was sung to me, I sang it to my daughters and we sang it to my grandchildren. Youngest loved 'Beyond The Sea' any time of day
