I'm desperately trying to work out what he actually said. Am I being incredibly dense?

(I hope your DH didn't actually tell the rep "she's in the loo and she'll be down when she's finished the job" )

What he actually said was: 'The rep is here and I have put the kettle on' (for coffee). I think I half heard him and made sense of what he said in the context of our daily routine. DH goes out for the papers and when he returns we have a cup of coffee while we read them. I had, as I said, forgotten that we had someone coming to the house.

I do not know what he told the rep, I do not want to think about it. The rep was very nice about me keeping him waiting and they had been outside so he could look at the garden and the back of the house where we want our conservatory before discussing details indoors over a cup of coffee.

I know somebody ( not DH) who would take things as literally as your DH did Monica instead of coming up to tell you to come down because the rep was there.
I also tend to get distracted, pull out some drawers ( not knickers) to rummage through and clean up and spend a happy hour looking at old letters or photos, or even go to the kitchen to make a cup of tea and decide at the same time to water the houseplants as they look a bit dry ( DH calls out ‘ is that tea ever coming?’)

We had a solid roof put on our conservatory and use it even more (although apparently it’s now a garden room).

I too get easily distracted. I would have started cleaning the bathroom, changed the towels and got side tracked into doing a bit of washing, got sidetracked into doing the washing up, put the kettle on while wiping the work tops, stopped for coffee, sat down and read the paper, so tidied the living room, realised I needed the loo and eventually finished the bathroom.

We women can multi-task, that’s what it is!

If I have an end goal, eg cleaning the house thoroughly before we have guests, I will do it.

However, if no-one is coming I can start the job and get distracted very easily.
This didn't happen when I was working because there was so much to do and so little time to achieve everything I needed to do.

The rep probably thought it was a euphemism and that you were having a shower - or still in bed? .
As all of us, except DH, were when the plumber arrived early yesterday morning. We'd forgotten he was coming.

My DH would have done exactly the same M0nica he wouldn’t have thought it a problem . He thinks very logically and never reads between the lines .

Bathroom being cleaned , will be 10 minutes, rep waiting , kettle boiled, what’s the problem?

I’m very easily distracted, I started sorting out a cupboard for anything we don’t use or need to fill a charity bag, I found a jigsaw puzzle and mat and spent a very happy couple of hours on my hands and knees and got all the edges done and the obvious bits.

NikDumpling I hope you don’t mind me asking, are you now able to use your conservatory/garden room all year round? We had a glass roof on ours because it was supposed to be a lot warmer, the difference between inside and outside is only 3 deg C.

I would love to be able to finish jobs like that, too, and am often easily distracted, especially if, like Jalima we are expecting visitors.

But I am very slow and methodical and thorough and a big job takes a long time. The main thing that interrupts is DH's tummy rumbling - I could go without eating if I was completely wrapped up in something, but lunchtime is lunchtime and no 2 ways about it.

Our conservatory gets lovely and toasty warm even in the very cold weather.
