Your cooker.

Gas cooker was a gift from Mother when she bought a new one:it's a Cannon and about 40 years old.
Still going strong but the numbers on the dials are worn away (rather like their owner)
Mother's gas fan oven which she bought as a replacement was "useless" she declared and never forgave me for having the best of the bargain!

My old Creda electric cooker is not well. I'm waiting for two replacement rings to arrive. So I hunted out my old camping gas stove and am using that at the moment and it's lovely! I wish I could always cook with gas but there is no gas installed in my property.

I so regret replacing my amazing Canon gas cooker with eye level grill. It was second hand when we got it 35years ago. I've had 2 other cookers in the last 10 years. I did however, keep the recipe book that the previous owners gave us with the Canon, this dates from the 1950s, has no pictures but is the best recipe book I have ever had. Filled with lots of basic old fashioned, hearty menus.

I have a new Zanussi induction hob because I moved into a new build flat with no gas ( they didn't mention that until the purchase had gone through but that's another story altogether!!) I absolutely love co.oking on the hob it's fast and is a doddle to clean, a quick spray and wipe and its sparkling again. The oven is good for baking, but the one small thing I don't like is that the grill is in the oven and I therefore hardly use it, I don't like it being in the same spa was the oven and it's too low down now, I find it difficult to keep bending, but I LOVE the hob and definitely recommend induction

I had a good solid 'Canon' cooker with an eye level grill and a spit roast (never used). It was built like a tank, cooked wonderfully, and lasted for years. Like a fool I decided to get a new one when we moved. I will not bore anyone with the saga but the mention of cookers now gets me twitching. I wish I had kept my Canon. My Mum had a Parkinison Cowan that was of the same standard as the Canon, and she used it for about thirty years until she died. They just don't make 'em like they used to...

I've got an old Belling with ceramic hob, it was 2nd hand, from the house my daughter bought, I love it its great, much better than new ones I have had, it's not flimsy, and works well, it must be well ove 25 years old,

My 30 year old is a Canon.
I did think about replacing it, but it still works perfectly. Needs a clean though!

I have a built in electric oven with gas hob. I don't like the electric oven and would much prefer a double oven but the useless salesmen said they are no longer made! It's so wasteful using the oven for things that could be grilled.
My previous two freestanding gas cookers only lasted five years each -modern cookers are not good.

I have a built in double oven with eye level grill. I dont have to bend down to put in or take out heavy casseroles etc. I don 't understand why the modern trend has reverted to low cookers like my mother had. I also have a seperate ceramic hob which is easy to keep clean. I hope I can get a similar oven and hob when we replace the kitchen -it suits me.

When we had the kitchen refitted eight years ago we bought two Electrolux single ovens and a Neff glass topped gas hob. One oven has all the fancy features most of which I never use. But it does have a self cleaning programme which is fantastic if like me you hate cleaning the oven. So the more basic one tends to only come into use if I’m cooking for all the family. Much as I prefer a gas hob the Neff one has been disappointing because the glass has marked around the burners. I did e mail them and they asked me to send them some photos which was impossible as the glass is dark brown. So it it’s ever replaced I will go back to stainless steel. MIL has just had to replace her freestanding gas oven after over 40 years as the oven thermostat couldn’t be replaced. It looked as good as new when it went, a testament to her years of lovingly polishing every little bit of it!

why not keep your camping stove handy for when you miss that gas ring experience?

I've got two camping stoves stashed away in the kitchen. The ones that take an aerosol type cartridge and come in a plastic "suitcase ".

Kim19 I would reveal the make of our cooker if I actually knew it! We bought this house with a newly installed kitchen complete with fitted cooker, but they didn’t leave us the brochure and there is no name on the cooker itself, so it remains a mystery.

My "cooker" is a collection of two individual electric hotplates, small grill/oven from Lidl and a microwave.
Keep thinking of getting a real cooker but it hasn't happened yet.

I now have an electric Aga and love it. It has independent hotplates which heat up really quickly, the oven is always hot (except when I turn it off in hot weather) and I have a folding rack to dry all my washing when the weather is bad. It bakes really evenly, unlike my old cooker which always burnt the edges of cakes---and it looks lovely, dove grey and black. I wouldn't change it for the world.

Had a Zanussi with ceramic hob until the grill stopped working. Got a new Zanussi with induction hob and absolutely love it; the hob is so responsive, just like gas, and so easy to just wipe over. It has two ovens and the grill is in the top one, which is ok. Just cannot get the measure of the main oven for baking cakes though. I don't bake a lot, perhaps a couple of times a year, but my cakes are either very undercooked or very overcooked. Sausage rolls and mince pies though, were fine at Christmas. Casseroles and roast dinners are great.

Before we downsized from our house we took our Belling electric cooker, double oven & ceramic hob with us. We couldn't use it as property we bought had a built in electric oven & separate gas hob which I loved apart from having to put the whole oven on to use the grill.

When I moved into my present property the kitchen was only a year old. Gas hob with electric oven under, a make I've never heard of & no instruction manual. I don't use the grill function as you have to close oven door resulting in burnt toast & smoke detector going off & guess, also not eye-level like my previous one. I would like to replace the oven but am more likely to invest in a combi microwave instead. I don't do much baking now & as I'm only cooking for myself now it makes more sense

For 35 years I cooked with gas and I loved its responsiveness. But then we moved and now it has to be electric as there is no gas in our area. I have two single ovens (both Candy) and a five station induction hob (Neff). I love the hob, it's super fast, easy to use and easy to clean. The ovens are OK but I don't like the grills being in the ovens, it is impossible to clean the roof of the oven above the element. Removing the door to be able to reach inside to clean the back wall of the oven is a two person task. The ovens cook OK, temperature is fairly accurate but the timer is difficult to use so I just use a separate clockwork timer. I also have a built in microwave which, although it is the same power rating as my old freestanding model, it doesn't cook as fast,, so when the kids and GC come to stay we get the old one out of the loft as backup! Kitchen appliances are horrendously expensive now but I don't think the quality is any better and I doubt that many of them will last 40 years as mother's cooker did.

Hygena gas oven with eye level separate grill purchased from MFI (remember them?) in 1996. Kept this unit when Kitchen redone in 2005 still working though timer /clock has conked out and automatic ignition a bit iffy. Have a Neff gas hob.

I also have a Neff electric fan oven which I love! And yes, the self clean function is a real bonus. I do have a gas hob as I think they are so easy to adjust.
Not that I’m planning to move house, but if I did, I’d have the same again.

I've noticed a few references to grilling toast. Does this mean toasters have gone out of fashion? Reading about eye level gas grills reminds me of the cooker we had in the kitchen of our student house 40 odd years ago - I remember singed eyebrows & hair on more than one occasion when grilling toast after a night out clubbing....ah, happy days! Wish we'd had a toaster then!

I used to have a ceremic hob on my cooker, but swapped it for a new one with an induction hob. I cannot praise it highly enough! It reacts instantly when I want the temperature to go up or down, it heats up quickly, and I recommend induction to anyone who says they are getting a new cooker. I did have to change my pans, but it was worth it in a big way!

I had a Neff gas hob and single electric oven for 18 years until we moved to a newbuild bungalow. I had no major complaints, but now appreciate the beauty of the white hob that still looked as good as new after all those years. I hate the stainless steel kitchen appliances that came with the house. The hob barely looks clean for five minutes, and scratches so easily! I can see that I'ts one of the first things that I'll want to replace in the future, though I realise that it is quite difficult to find white hobs and ovens. They also installed a built in microwave with a black glass door and control panel which is constantly covered in fingerprints.(altogether, the kitchen is not too practical as the 'luxury' stone work tops chip and stain so easily) I feel like suggesting to the builder that they make more sensible choices in future.

All this talk of cookers has set me dreaming of a double oven with 5 gas rings ?. I rent at the moment and the white goods aren't mine. I'm hoping for a move this year (A whole different thread) but highly doubt I'm going to be able to afford the cooker of my dreams! I love cooking and baking but as most days now it's just me maybe a double oven with 5 gas rings is OTT ?
